    Default Female vocalists poll

To me, Janis Joplin is the best of the bunch I listed. I do think Pink & gaga have some genuine talent, but I've heard Lady Gaga stuff that sounds like a rip off of Madonna, and I heard one that sounded like a rip off of Kate Bush's "sat in your lap." Is there any originality left?

I picked the 60's on your list, but there are good and bad singers in all eras.

For orginal females in the current era, I like Neko Case and Sam Phillips.

A talented group of gals in every era , each unique in their own way . I think Annie Wilson of Heart belongs in there somewhere . I think if you had a sing-off , Joplin would blow away the competition .

    Neko Case !

The 80's were good, but why no mention of the 90's? I'd stick Sinead O' Connor, Ani DiFranco, PJ Harvey and Lush up there with any of the aforementioned.

I guess the 70s would include Stevie Nicks, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, Roberta Flack, Barbara Streisand and a few others.

Not sure what decades to put her in but Diana Krall all the way.

I have to stick with Janis Joplin, I have read the Autobio of Grace Slick, but Janis will have my heart forever. Will she stop? No way.

While Joplin had chops as did Slick, it isn't my bag. From harmonies and going across the full scale I would say mid 1970s into the 1980s [[without Debra Harry, she wasn't really a good singer, just hot with a mediocre band).

Other than the rich girl Gaga playing some piano [[which doesn't make her great) her vocals aren't that good either. As for Perry she now has clones all around her. Most female "artists" today have the same effect...shout into the mike and then hold the last note....BORING!

Linda Ronstadt was a pretty big deal that decade.

I have. I have some albums by her.

My all time favorite female singer of any era is Patsy Cline.

Ah, yes, The Secret of the Incas. She was, of course, Peruvian, and sang with a unique delivery. And, hey, Pam.....I'll go along with Patsy Cline for one of the top ones!

My memory trips frequently take me back to the very early 1950's when Doris Day's rendition of "Secret Love" made me absolutely melt in my tracks. I'd give that my #1 rating of all time, mainly becouse of the memories............sigh..........

I'm not big on saying who is the Greatest, or stuff like that. A lot of singers, some of them not all-that-great, over-all, have their moments.
Janis Joplin's reading of "Piece Of My Heart," if you really hear it for the naked-emotion confession that it is, is truly scorching.
In more recent news, I don't know shit about Jennifer Hudson, but I saw her on TV, a couple of months ago, and she sang the hell out of "No Woman No Cry." Especially given the gender-reversal issue, she was quite spellbinding.

Jessye Norman's career spans some 40 years. She continually takes my breath away with the drama, power, beauty and majesty she brings to her art.

Meh.... Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Charice Pempengco and Charlotte Church are the best female singers in the world... everyone else just screeches and does a fire and smoke act...
