Default Expanded hours bear fruit for Eastern Market

Five weeks into its pilot season, Detroit Eastern Market Tuesdays is far exceeding market officials' expectations, attracting an estimated 3,000 shoppers a week and enough interest from vendors to start a waiting list for stalls.

Market president Dan Carmody said he had expected 1,500-2,000 shoppers a week. But he hadn't foreseen the Tuesday market succeeding, in part, because it's not like Saturday's.

"There's a funny angle to this. It was staring us right in the face, but we didn't recognize it," Carmody said. "The Saturday market is all hustle and bustle and really unique in all of North America. But there are a lot of people who think it's too much hustle and bustle.

"They think the Tuesday market has more of a neighborhood feel -- and that it's easier to get into and out of."

    That's good to hear.
I was there on Tuesday a few weeks ago and there appeared to be enough people to warrant the addition of some vendors. Especially veg/fruit vendors since there were only a couple when I was there.
There was a really nice atmosphere minus the overcrowding that you find on Saturdays during the summer months.

I heard they are thinking of opening on Sundays, too.
