    Default Women's World Cup

The Women's World Cup competition is underway. Anyone who remembers the triple overtime defeat of China by the US Women's Soccer Team will remember one of the greatest contests of any sport in which the women of both teams played their hearts out. The Rose Bowl sold out and the event was the most viewed women's sport event ever. The Packers and Badgers are ok but after that event, the US Women's Soccer team became my team.

All 32 games are being broadcast on an ESPN station. If you have a daughter, this is an opportunity to provide sport role models and introduce them to a sport they can play.

The US Women have won the first game in their series against N. Korea. ESPN will cover their Sat. 7/2 11:30am EST game against Colombia and their 7/7 2:30pm game with Sweden. To follow the series go to http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/index.html

Edited to add: TV schedule for all 32 games
I assume this to be EST.

Today game between the US and Brazil was fantastic. The US played the last 55 minutes of the game one player shorthanded because of some questionable refereeing. The game went into two overtimes. In overtime, Brazil's Marta made this impossible goal to put Brazil in the lead kicking backward with her toe on a bounce. Check out the angle. Pure genius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNQgSgH9Rnc&NR=1 [[1min1sec)

After both 15 minute overtimes were over, the ref added 3" of stoppage time. With one minute of stoppage time remaining in the 122nd minute of game time, the US made this awesome goal to stay alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOAJn8h6VAI [[1min6sec)

After two overtimes the game went into a shootout to determine the winner.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWWg2qOIZxc [[last goal at 7min15sec)

I was very leery of this final match from the get go. The fact that our girls owned Japan over the years bothered me. I thought we needed a little more patience with those chances early on. I don't know that i've ever seen 3 penalty kicks missed in a row. Tough match but props to the Japanese girls.

Downriviera, It was a joy to watch the Japan game even if it didn't end the way I wished. The US and Japan played a clean game. We kept missing the goal while Japan never made a mistake. End of story.

There was another story though. It was the good sportsmanship and respect that the players of both teams exhibited to each other. The game probably contributed to better relations between our two countries. Not only that but the world saw the heart, good sportsmanship, and graciousness in defeat of our women. They reflected well on the US as ambassadors.

    Picture of our heroines.
