    http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article...FREE/905209983

"The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan in September made a $1.5 million grant to New Urban Learning — the nonprofit parent of the new high school— to support the $15 million renovation of the Albert Kahn-designed, former Franklin Furniture warehouse on Franklin Street in Detroit’s Riverfront Development District."

    The building looks nice!

    Best of luck to them.

According to the article, this high school will be aligned with the new school going up next to the science center.

As a architecture fan I love to see this old building being renovated in to somthing new
As DPS school teacher I hate to see yet another charter school going up in the city.
It really bothers me that when it come to charter schools some of you just don't get it.

what do you consider a quality education?
There is no difference between a DPS school and charter school both
have mediocre test scores at best,
both have problems with student behavior
Well there is one big difference charter school teachers are non union,
and some people just don't like unions.

and to add to that charter school teachers don't have to have certification for teaching so there is no guarantee that the person leading the classroom is an actual teacher

Sounds good to me. When the law hit the books that all teachers had to be certified, guess what teachers were forced out of my high school? College professors who taught elective classes like entrepreneurship. Thanks government mandated certification!

ALL teachers in Michigan must be certified, including those in charter schools.

Dear God! That's a Kahn?! What on earth did they do to it to make it so ugly!?

While Kahn has notable structures across the city a great deal of Kahn designed buildings are just plain jane factories such as this. The pioneering of steel reinforced concrete for use in these factories is part of what put him on the map in Detroit.

I teach at a charter school, and all of our teachers are certified.

BTW..."certified" does not necessarily mean "qualified". Earning a degree in education and passing the requisite exams for certification do not automatically ensure quality educators in our schools. I've run across more than a few certified teachers who leave me wondering how they ever made it past 12th grade, let alone college.
