Metro area ranks among top 5 regions in economic analysis

Metro Detroit has "significant growth potential" in key industries — such as the advanced manufacturing, information technology, life sciences, and chemical and materials industries, according to a new study for Automation Alley, the regional technology business association in Troy.

Southeast Michigan can take advantage of these strengths through military contracts, exports, work force development and collaboration with other economic development agencies, according to the East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group, which performed the study that was released Wednesday.

The report, called "Automation Alley: Growing the Detroit Region's Technology Economy," found that Metro Detroit finished in the top five against other regional economies in benchmark categories such as percentage of total employment in technology sectors and number of individuals working in the architectural and engineering fields.
