    Default WSU Drops Another Sport

WSU dumps women's hockey, 3 years after scrapping the men's team. While a few players were told in person, the majority found out via texts, calls, and FB/Tweet postings because they were home for the summer....which is faster than the letter that's being mailed to their houses....

For those who would like to support the team, here's an online petition.

WSU is now downgraded into a technical career center rather than a state university.Dropping athletic sports as bad news for the Wayne State's image. It would not lure kids with sports in their minds. Is all schools wanted to have just Baseball, Basketball and Football in their programs? Leaving other athletic programs out would prove that Americans are getting more dumber than some undevelop nation.

If you do not have big time football and basketball programs bringing in the big bucks from ticket sales, television, and bowl games, it is necessary for alumni contributions to provide for the school sports programs. You cannot do it out of state tax dollars or tuition and fees.

At my old alma mater [[with an enrollment less than 1,000), the alumni supported intercollegiate teams in football, basketball, baseball, cross-country, indoor track, outdoor track, wrestling, swimming, golf, tennis, and rifle marksmanship. If you love your alma mater, you just have to step up to the plate.

I am somewhat surprised by this. I though WSU was going to eventually upgrade its sports from Div II to Div IA [[all sports) or at least to D-IAA [[football). With the elimination of the hockey program it looks like WSU is going to stay right where it is.

Sports have nothing to do with America's intelligence. Most of the developed world's universities do not have college sports programs. Wayne is and will continue to be fine without dumping more money into those programs.

Some of us have becoming a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or other professional on our minds before Women's hockey.

Three words: Lake Superior State. Just across the border Wayne Gretsky played Junior A [[I coulda bought one of his jerseys, but didn't have the eighty bucks at the time), the Esposito bros were born and raised. Scale it up to WSU, and we're pulling in talent from Windsor and Detroit, and we totally dominate the nation.

DOMINATE THE NATION!!! National television exposure. Fans coming down and filling the arena, a local boomlet in the economy, not to mention the dividends of local pride and spirit! Cool kids in places like Davenport and Amarillo ordering WSU hockey jerseys online.

There's no excuse for this, it's not like WSU is some snotty private school, it's supported by taxpayers, and what's good enough for Lake Superior State is certainly good enough for WSU, gander and goose. I yield the floor.
