C-Jazz is having a hard enough time getting airplay on terrestrial radio, traditional jazz is a non-starter besides the station fades out in the northern suburbs.

    Is this a good thing?

I'd take Ross Porter in a minute.

Ed Love is still on the air; I listen to him every weeknight on WDET. Now, what Ed plays is actual Jazz. What this new station is going to play, the jury is still out on.

I hear that. Not a fan of much of the play-by-numbers non-discript 'smooth' jazz, but once in a while they play a few good songs....

The only kind of jazz that has a hope of being played on terrestrial radio consistently is smooth jazz, comptemporary or c-jazz.. Straight ahead or traditional jazz will be relegated to public radio stations and certain times on commericial stations like from 3-6 on sunday afternoons. Best bet is to get XM or Pandora if you want a steady diet of traditional jazz..

It looks like this station will be c-jazz with maybe some urban adult comptemporary thrown in.

Unfortunately, this is another radio owner who bought the bill of goods that a company named Broadcast Architecture was selling. This is the company that is responsible for dictating to listeners what smooth jazz is. The owner, Allen Kepler, has single-handedly ruined the format for thousands of fans across the country. Did you ever hear "Just My Imagination" by the Temptations on V98.7 and wonder why? No, it's not anything remotely "jazz-like," but because they SAY it belongs on the station, you'd hear it. Their reason? Because they tested a bunch of songs with a group of people in a target demo and the song did well. DUH! Think about it; I "like" the song, but I don't expect to hear it on a smooth jazz radio station.

Major markets across the country have abandoned the format, including Detroit, Chicago, San Fran, Philly, Atlanta, Miami, and on and on. All because ONE GUY decides what the format should be. The result: failure! Combine that with hosts who are not even in Detroit [[read: no localism) and your result is a waste of a radio frequency. A professional air talent wouldn't think to tell Kenny G how to play the sax, so why should Kenny G play radio host?

Note to the current owner: dump BA as soon as possible and hire LOCAL talent to run your station. You have a much better chance of succeeding if you do. Call me.

94.3 is also new to the airwaves [[sames owner) and has a horrible name [["The Bone") but adverts itself as sort of the American 89X. I listen to it when I'm on the west side, as 94.3 towards the river is a dance/pop station from I believe Chatham ON.

There appears to be an argument brewing between "The Oasis", which is actually a 250 watt translater rebroadcast of a WGPR HD-2 signal, and rocker WOIT in Toledo. Boath broadcast on 104.7 FM. WOIT is complaining that "The Oasis" is interfering with WOIT's ability to run at the power alloted it by the FCC, and that the translater is causing listeners problems with receiving it's signal. This should be fun to watch.

WRCJ is pretty good for classic jazz standards at night. By day it's a kind of pop-classical station with lots of soundtracks and such, but at night you can get Tony Mowod's show from Duquesne in Pittsburgh. I like Tony a lot better than Ed Love, who seems to have a raging boner for David "Fathead" Newman and a few other select artists that he plays continually. I also hate the way he toys with the pots, bringing up the volume in between his brief sentences. And, I'll probably never forgive him for telling listeners to stop requesting Sun-Ra when he died, saying, "This isn't that kind of jazz show."

That may be the audio compression WDET applies rather than manual fiddling. I always liked Ed Love but will check in to the Tony Mowod show as well - thanks for the recommendation.

Why be the American 89X if 89X already plays the exact same music? Why not have the real thing?

WRCJ is the best station on the radio IMO. Love the classical during the day and love the jazz at night. I only wish they had a better signal as some days it seems very low and others it is bright and high volumed.

According to WDET Ed Love is only on the air on Saturday and Sunday from 7-10:00pm. WRCJ [[90.9) plays "real" Jazz from 7:00pm until 4 or 5:00am

Ed Love once called that other stuff "Diet Jazz." He is on only on weekends now, and is slowly starting to play stuff post 1965. I had no idea Tony Mowad on WRCJ was being picked up from Pittsburgh.
