Default Wanted: Summer jobs for Detroit teens

    Mary Kramer

Pamela Moore is hoping the business community's support for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing translates into a tangible dividend: More summer jobs for Detroit teens.

She's putting out a call to Detroit employers: If you have a part-time job, she can find a teen to fill it. Federal dollars that funded jobs for as many as 7,000 teens in 2009 will fund only 1,300 this year, said Moore, who runs the Detroit Workforce Development Department.
I first met Moore when I was appointed to the workforce board by Mayor Bing. She's the seventh workforce director in eight years, appointed by Bing last year to run the department that hires and manages contractors to run various job skills and training programs funded by state and federal dollars. Detroiters register for services at four one-stop centers in the city.

During the Kilpatrick era, the department seemed to award mid-level or higher management jobs to "friends and family."
