For the past 20 years Zingerman’s has been my favorite place for a top shelf deli sandwich. That said, I have to say that Mudgie’s might just give Zingerman’s a run for their money in a side-by-side comparison.
If you had to choose a favorite [[Zingerman’s vs. Mudgie’s), based on sandwiches alone, which one would you choose?
BTW - Zingerman’s still gets my vote – but it’s close [[IMO)!
Zingerman's still wins. But it's close, real, real close. I love Mudgie's
Mudgie's, much better in my opinion.
I always thought Zingerman's has been over priced and overrated.

Zingerman's is great, but don't forget that Mudgie's is several dollars cheaper across the board for similar sandwiches—extraordinary value.
Has anyone been to Star Deli on 12 mile W of Telegraph? How does Mudgies or Zingermans compare? Star has been my reigning favorite corned beef for 20 years. I'm going to give Mudgies a try after reading the reviews.
McNally's was my absolute favorite deli , I'm still mourning the bread pudding [[C'mon Greg) , but Mudgies is a nice alternative . Zingerman's is good , but if you find yourself in Fenton give The French Laundry a try , excellent !
I live in Fenton and can vouch for the French Laundry, it's always busy and the food is quite amazing. Great sandwiches!
If money were no object, Zingerman's. There is nothing really close to that quality-wise. If it were easy to replicate, they would never get away with the prices they charge.
Mudgie's and Ephs are/were tops among delis for normal people.*
But arguing about the relative qualities of American delis and their products is like arguing about the quality of beer. You can have the good and the bad, but in the end, it's still a second-class culinary product.
*Normal defined as "paying less for lunch than a tank of gasoline."

Zingerman's is good but ridiculously overpriced. And it's really not as good as it was 10+ years go, especially the bakehouse stuff. The deli meats are top notch.
Mudgies, hands down. I grew up in Ann Arbor, but Zingerman's is way overpriced, and the people who own it are really d0uch3y. Based simply on taste, I love the comfort food aspect of Mudgies as well, plus the fact that a sandwich which I think is often better than Zing, is not 17 dollars.
My answer would have been Mudgies but they changed their bread. And imho it's not as good as it used to be. Almost seems like store bread instead of the nice crusts the samichs used to have.
I love Mudgies..even more than I use to love Eph's. I haven't been to Zingermans's in a long time, but Star Deli is more of a traditional jewish style deli than Mudgies. They're too different to really compare. I have to say that I love the corned beef and pastrami at places like Star [[and even Russel Street) as they tend to be cooked and sliced more in the traditional style, plus I love my sandwiches grilled. You can't beat the fresh cooked turkey at Mudgies and that Southwest Side Story Sandwich! Amazing good. Love the soup creations there most of the time. I'm so glad they are still in the neighborhood and that they have late hours.
Anyone remember the deli that used to be on East Lafayette next to the fire station where Greektown Casino now is?
Can't remember the name but it was good.
Hopefully not off thread, but how can anybody eat or try to eat that fist sized wad of meat between two slices of rye? The last time I bought one of those, I made four sandwiches out of one at home. And I'm 6'4" and 220. Can anybody sit AT the restaurant and finish one with a side of fries? Now a lumberjack breakfast for me, is no problem.:p
Changed the bread????I'll have to try and get over there, everyone knows it's the bread that makes the sandwich - and in Mudgies, they'd give you a slice of bread with their terrific soups..

Russell Street is the winner. Their rotating selection of soups is unbeatable, and their egg salad on rye is insane.
Hygrade Deli on Michigan Ave. in Detroit would get my vote! Zingerman's is good but extremely overpriced!
Just a note on Zingerman's expense... They do [[or at least did) pay a very livable wage to their staff.
