Front page article in Detroit News funded by Casinos???

In the Detroit News Paper on the front page today is an article supposedly excusing an armed hijacker for his actions because he has a "gambling addiction". Sounds like there was some pressure from the casinos to get this article published otherwise why would it show up on the front page? Looks to me like damage control considering the victims were elderly white females. Don't want to scare off whites who come there to dump their money into the casino coffers. Can't figure out why else this would be "Front Page News".
You pull a gun and hijack two people, leave them in the middle of nowhere. And this is because of a gambling addiction? What about all the other degenerate gamblers out there that don't commit crimes other than losing money?
This was a crime of opportunity, nothing else. Don't try to trivialize this!

Gambling addiction leads to loss of his marriage, money, job and then to commit a crime resulting in imprisonment. Exactly why would the casinos want to promote this message?

I see the article completely different than you did. There's no way a casino would want this article printed.

I didn't see the article as offering gambling addiction as an excuse. I saw it as warning story showing the things that can happen to people with gambling addictions.

This article comes more from the people who want gambling banned. Under the thought of "Beware, even good people can succumb to addictive gambling." Unfortunately, This is true of any addictive behavior.

Why wouldn't story about someone with a good job turned into a carjacker be not front page news? And that the robber was a gambling addict would hardly make the news about it any better. Your tin foil conspiracy really doesn't hold up to the slightest bit of logic.

If the casino was to pay money, it would be to have the article disappear. I don't see how showing the negatives of gambling addiction promotes a casino.

But maybe it's a total head-game and you're right, and I'm being manipulated just like how they want it :-)

Gambling addiction is very real, and it can be extremely powerful and very difficult to escape. Casinos are forced to give some lip service to fighting gambling addiction. But the casinos want it to garner as little notice as possible [[which is why they wouldn't like a story like this one), since a very significant amount of their regular repeat business, and their profits, comes from addicted gamblers.
