IRS moving to Comerica Tower

IRS moving from McNamara to Comerica, will lease approx. 4 floors and pay 1.6 million a year in rent.

They're moving from the McNamara so the FBI has room to expand there, since the new office tower for the FBI has been canceled.

It's always nice to see empty space in an existing building get used up, instead of adding brand new space.

The FBI needs the extra space to contain the ongoing Kwame/Cheeks Task Force.

In the next decade, the Detroit area will see the numbers of Federal employees grow fairly rapidly.

A healthy amount of crime keeps government employed. Never forget that.

Certain parts of the Federal government had downsized, too, over the last decade or so. My dad was State Director, U.S. Treasury, Savings Bonds Division, over Michigan and Indiana until he retired approximately 1994. Eventually the Treasury Department downsized and outsourced the Savings Bonds program to an outside company.

It will be interesting to see in what ways the Federal government increases.

Anybody wonder about the extra secuirty measures that will havve to be installed in that building? The fireproofed stairwells run from the ground floor to the Wright-Dickerson offices on the top floor. That means that anyone who gets into the building will have ample opportunity to create mischief or mayhem... think of the Buhl Building and the deranged divorcee with the firebombs and uzi ... that was pretty with people jumping out of windows.

At the McNamara Building they have metal detectors right at the door and decorative bombblast prevention on the street; plus internal stairwells are seperated in groups so you can't traverse at will.

I doubt any other renters will find it very attractive to have their clients undergo cavity searches just for a meeting. "Yes Mr. Smedley they do do that, but with their brand of astroglide and natural rubber gloves, some clients rather enjoy the experience."

1.6 million a year to rent? Hell, buy the old Courthouse and be done with it.

They put the metal detector near some of the elevators, partitioned off. Take a look at 211 Fort Street to see how it works.

the elevator banks don't work that way in the comerica tower.

It's not unheard of for corporate high rises to have security screen visitors with metal detectors. Many buildings in Manhattan won't even allow visitors to enter without a government issued ID.

Is the US Bankruptcy Court still there? That would mean a high security presence already.

It's been 5 years, but I used to work in that building. There was no significant amount of security.
