Marvin had a toy shop in one of Sam's' storefronts [[before they made it all one space). I just remember it as a strange dark place. You were usually the only one in there, aside from him. Don't know what that means. :)

My mom grew up on the east side on Goldengate, just east of the Chrysler and then moved to Birmingham after the riots in '68. She recently told me she never knew what a shopping mall until she moved out of the city, that made me smile. My dad lived the first couple of his years on the west side on Harlow, 7 Mile/Southfield area before moving to Royal Oak sometime in the early sixties into a house I live in today. I always wish I was from the city.

In the meantime, went to Carlton for kindergarden, St. Jude for grade school, Arthur for 9th grade, Denby High, then Wayne State graduating in 1979. I worked at Kavans on Morang then the Clock Restaurant at East Warren and Cadieux, then Allstate in Southfield. Dad worked at Fruehauf till he retired in 1977.
I was born at Mt. Carmel hospital. Our home was on Virginia Park 2 blocks from Grand River. When I was 5 we moved to Grand River and Strathmoor...I can still smell the old Great Lakes bakery on the corner! In 68 we moved to Lahser/6 Mile on Greydale just a few houses above Hope Park. Anyone remember Iversons Bakery on Lahser? There was a Woolworths on Grand River, a dress store, Rexall Drugs and a beauty school too. Probably a few other places I can't remember too.
East side!! I was born in '49 at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe. My family lived on Wayburn between Morang and Moross. I married and moved away, but was back in the house in the mid 80's until we sold it in '89. I attended Carleton, Arthur, Denby and WCCC, as well as a short time at RETS.
GOL: You're not so old. I was born in Cottage Hospital in '41.

Born at St. Joseph Hospital, Detroit. Lived in an upper flat on Longview [[Chalmers/Outer Dr area) until I was 4, then to Eastburn in NE Detroit. Burbank, St. Jude, Notre Dame, U-D, WSU.
We are an east meets west story. My husband and I met at WSU. Been married now for 35 years. My husband was born at Womens Hospital on Woodward and I was born at St John's on Seven Mile/Moross. That was when it was a tiny Catholic hospital. My Dad, father of five, always said the best kids were born there. I concur.
I was born in 1954, the year of Mary. I am not Catholic but the hospital was. The date of my birth was my Aunt May's b'day. My middle name was supposed to be May but the damn Nun put it down as Mary.
My memories of growing up Detroit were great. My mom even wore a skirt, Peter Pan collar shirts and an apron most of my childhood. We never locked our doors. So much for nostalgia.
We are now back in Detroit [[5 yrs). I still love it. It is super simple to me. My neighbors are great. My community is awesome. I invest in my community and it pays back triple. I rarely swear but a big Fuck You to anyone who thinks Detroit is a community of losers.
Northeast suburb. Escaped to the Cass Corridor a week after graduating from High School.
I was born at North Detroit General as well. Spent the first six years of my life near Dequindre and Six Mile. Later lived near W. Outer Drive and James Couzens. Haven't lived in the city of Detroit in 25+ years [[currently in Southern California), but I visit often!
Eastside: lived on Wayburn from [[1959-1977) attended Carlton---GA----Arthur---Denby [[1977)----NMU---WSU---and then moved south....:[[
Born at Bon Secours, lived on Nottingham near Morang [[Kavan's), attended Carleton elementary through grade 5 then went to University Liggett from 6-12. Belonged to St. Brendan's parish back when I was Catholic [[I'm a non-denominational Christian now). Moved to Grosse Pointe Woods in '83 and then threw away all my show shovels and fled to Arizona in '01. I got fed up with the high taxes, rainy days, long winters and short summers and decided life was too short to take any more of it!
Born in Bon Secours, lived on Lenox near E Warren. Then moved to Pinewood, at 7 Mile & Gratiot.
Finished growing up in Harper Woods. My dad grew up at Conner & Gratiot in what he always referred to as the Projects, some place called Parkside, I think. Anyone every heard of it? When I was little, he used to take us kids on drives through his old neighborhood but all I remember is that Parkside was near City Airport and there were cannons in the courtyards of the buildings
Not just heard of it - my mom and grandparents LIVED in Parkside, and my mom lived there until her early teens, when my grandparents moved into the duplex on Nottingham in the early 50's, so that my mom could attend Denby High which was perceived as a better school at the time. Then, once I came along a few years later, I continued to live on Nottingham with my grandparents while my parents both worked.
While in Parkside, my mother and grandparents lived on a street called Stringham Court, I believe; it was right within Chandler Park and my mom has fond memories of enjoying that park, and the public swimming pool there, and of attending Hamilton elementary and Jackson middle schools.
It was near Conner and WARREN, not Gratiot, though.
Wow. The Clock Restaurant - now there is a memory blast from the past. I had forgotten all about those! I don't think I ever ate at one but I remember seeing it there - right next to Midas Muffler which I believe was on the SE corner of Warren and Cadieux. And of course, as previously stated, I lived on the same block as Kavan's, on Nottingham halfway between Britain and Morang.
Another landmark I remember from a little further north was what used to be Brodie's Mufflers on Warren and, I believe, Marseilles. Now it's a JiffyLube. That was an interesting bit of architecture that got my attention even as a little kid. I think I have a picture of that too:
Thanks EMG. I was starting to think he made it up or I imagined the story. It being on Conner and Warren makes sense too, all I could remember is we used to end up by the airport. That's at/near Conner & Gratiot, right? Was there a school called Wilbur Wright around there? That was also on the driving tour, I was pretty young so I can't really remember where it was. There was also a big scary church, maybe St John Berchman?
Yes, the airport was/is along Conner near Gratiot. I just looked it up on Google Earth to make sure, and interestingly enough it's apparently been renamed from City Airport to Coleman Young Municipal Airport [[as if he needed yet another city landmark named after him  ). Anyway the airport runs between Gratiot and McNichols on Conner - then north of McNichols, Conner becomes Outer Drive.
As I said, the Parkside area was my mom's childhood neighborhood, not mine, so I'm not that familiar with it. My mom's elementary school was Hamilton at the corner of Southampton and Newport. As far as "Wilbur Wright elementary," the name sounds familiar but other than that I knew nothing about it, but even through some Googling and Google Earth searching I was unable to find it. Link to the Detroit Public schools is here so maybe you will find another similar name, or address, that might help find a school that you might be thinking of: http://www.detroit.k12.mi.us/
As for the "big scary church," I guess all churches are scary if you're young enough or small enough at the time. I did a Google search [[see this link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...it&btnG=Search ) and from what I can see apparently there was a St. John Berchman's that is apparently now closed - and what's more on that page you'll find at least one link to an old thread about it on the "old" version of these forums; alas, that link apparently is no longer valid.
St. John Berchmans was on Lakeview and E. Warren. It is still there but under a different denomination. Could the church on Connor be St. Ignatious?
Warrendale
Wouldn't Conner and Gratiot be St. Davids - Outer Drive and Gratiot
Not sure what your asking or referring to, WKL.
St. David's Church and school is/was on Outer Drive just east of Gratiot. Conner is just south of that.
My parents owned the store right on the corner of Gratiot and Conner. That's where I grew up. Went to St. David's for 8 years too.
I grew up in the shadows of Cody High School. I went to Everett [[which was a wing in Cody High) for Kindegarten and took a summer school class and Driver's Ed at Cody. I was born at Mt Carmel. I only live about 1.5 miles from the houses I grew up in, I have only lived in three zip codes in my life, all contiguous.
Sounds like there's more eastsiders than westsiders so far.
Gbran...I'd love to talk Carleton with you..is there some way we can message privately? Haven't figured that out yet.
If it's Carleton - which BTW was my own elementary school - you're interested in, I've got pics of that too! :D These are from 2001.

OK, the above were the outdoor pictures of Carleton. Now here are the indoor ones. All were taken in early 2002. Knowing I was going to be leaving the state, I got permission to tour the inside - with a faculty escort - for the first time since I finished fifth grade there in the '70s. Enjoy!

EMG....You have no idea how much those photos mean to me. I am working with some other June '63 Carleton grads to put together a mini-reunion...dinner, drinks, and then a tour of Carleton. I live out of state and probably won't be able to go, so your photos mean a lot. I'd love to talk Carleton to anyone who was there in the 60's or 70's. I'm still looking for a photo of the old "portables" that had classrooms in them and sat behind the main school buildings. They were torn down while I was still at Carleton, if I remember correctly.
EMG.....the photo you have labeled the westCasinodoor, is actually the east Casino door by the kindergarten. The west Casino door was in the new 2-story addition. Got any more???? I am so happy to see these.
Holy cow, you're right. I'll have to rename that picture in my files.
And now you've told me something I didn't know...that the two-story side was "an addition." It was always there when I was there [[I started there in the mid 60's). Interesting. I think I might have a few more pictures of Carleton, but not many. Let's see....

And THIS one labled West Casino Door really IS the West Casino Door! :D

That's all I have of Carleton. I do have a few other photographs of some of the residential streets in the neighborhood, especially my own neighborhood which was south of Morang. Here's one last picture that should bring back memories to anyone who walked home from school on Roxbury to cross the light at Morang:

And of course quite a few Carleton alumni might have fond memories of St. Brendan's Church - say the word and I'll post several St. Brendan's [[some of which I think I obtained from the old version of these forums which I never actually joined as a member).
So here are some names that might jog some memories....
Teachers....Ms. Frankie [[Science room 108), Ms. Wells [[3rd-4th grade & mathematics, Room 212), Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Owen [[1st grade Room 100), Mrs. Green [[nee Sherwood 4th grade Room 214), Mrs. Harris, Mr. Ignasiak / Miss Osgood [[gym teachers room 106), Ms. Van Ryn [[5th grade Room 209), Mr. Dyer-Hurdon [[4th grade Room 210), Ms. Elizabeth Horvath [[Library room 110), Mrs. Conflitti, Mrs. Irene Miller [[music) - room 109...and of course the principal Mildred Swander.
When I was there, Miss Frankie, Miss Miller, Mr. Ignasiak, Miss Conflitti and Mrs. VanRyan were there. Our principal was Miss Wenzel. Please email me..I'd love to talk Carleton with you. gralady@yahoo.com
I prefer to keep my email address private, but I'd be glad to continue this discussion here or in a "Carleton thread" if you'd like to start one.
I'll start a Carleton thread. Thanks.
I was born at Kirwood Hospital in Detroit...I grew up on Conner between Jefferson and the River...I attended Keating Elem., Jackson Jr High, Southeastern High, received BA & MSW from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor..currently live on the Riverfront.
I grew up in Northwest Detroit. North of McNichols, South of Seven Mile, West of Wyoming and East of Livernois. When my family moved into the area in 1975 it was a jewish community.
Moved to Detroit at age 2, Lakewood north of Mack. In '71 we lived on Bewick, first block off of Jefferson. We drove by the Uniroyal plant frequently, and the first word I learned to spell was Uniroyal.
In '73 officially became a west-sider in Grandmont on Archdale and Lyndon, then Archdale and Schoolcraft [[ho!), where we stayed till '88. Edison Elementary School on Grand River was Happy Land.
Been "livin' the dream" in Hamtramck since '91. Somebody, wake me please. ;)
Considering the overwhelming number of Eastsiders on this site, the name should be changed to East Detroiters Yes!:D
Grew up on Devonshire near E. Warren and Outer Dr. Went to Stellwagen Elem 70-74, St. Matts 75-79, and DeLaSalle 79-83. Moved to GPP SCS now in Warren.
I've added several additional pictures of eastside Detroit [[mostly of the St. Jude church area) to the "St. Jude Nostalgia" thread in the Detroit forum.
Born @ St John's in 1954... lived on Georgia St across from Patronage of St Joseph. Attended K @ AL Holmes and went 1st through 8th grade at PSJ. 9th grade was at Regina HS; grades 10 through 12 @ East Detroit HS, where my parents moved in 1968.
My first apartment was on Laurel, near Houston-Whittier & Dickerson. Moved around a bit as was convenient to ladder-climbing with jobs, first real one [[not counting Kmart and Federal's) was with JTBarnes & Co in the 1st National Building. Moved to the north 'burbs when I took a job in Southfield, then was back living on the east side when I started working at NBD.
Bought our first house in Warren... bought our 2nd one 160 miles west, near Kalamazoo, been here almost 20 yrs now.
Born August 1956 at Holy Cross Hospital. Was supposed to move into the house my dad was building on Alstead near Moross with my mom & grandparents but the house wasn't finished until October. Lived in my parternal grandparents' 3-story house on E. 8 Mile [[Warren side) across from Crown Furniture. [[Where was that?). My dad, uncle and grandpa built that house, though I don't know when. There was a huge sour cherry tree right in front of the house. Yumm!
East side, near 8 Mile.
Dad had recently gotten rid of his pre-war "jalopy Nash" and was soon to buy his first brand new car, a 1950 Plymouth DeLuxe. I was almost born in the back seat of a Hudson Hornet. But Uncle Ben drove a little faster and made it to Cottage Hospital with minutes to spare on August 29, 1950.
I grew up on Farmbrook between Frankfort and Southampton. Attended Bethany Lutheran School for Kindergarten through 8th grade. Went one year at Finney, then attended Lutheran East, graduating in 1968.
Now living in Norton Shores in the Muskegon area.
Don,t want to make Turkeycall feel old But your post got me thinking about playing against Bethany Lutheran in a playoff game in the MelOtt league, And you went to The Rival Lutheran East.Westside,Eastside It s all one paralel Metro area.
EMG -
My son and his wife live just off of River Road, on East Riverwood. They have a Twin Lake address.
reddog289 -
I'm pretty sure Lutheran West is history, as is Lutheran East. I heard just a few weeks ago that Bethany School will be closing, too. That will leave but one Lutheran school in Detroit, Detroit Urban.
I don't know if Bethany Church will last much longer. When I was young, Bethany had around 1350 members, around 800 attending on a Sunday. They now worship an average of 67 per week.
Wow. When I was on the University Liggett cross country team [[1977-1978) we used to compete against Lutheran East and West all the time.
As far as East Riverwood, I know today I could look that up on Google [[and maybe later I will), but at the time it wasn't a street I was familiar with. I must have passed at at least once as I do remember one time taking an "adventurous" bike ride all the way to the east end of River Road!!
As far as I know I got my first taste of the east side by playing against Bethany Lutheran in Mel Ott league baseball. Even though I did not attend Lutheran West, Many family members of mine did. That school is now Detroit Urban Lutheran. I hate to see schools close, But that is a sign of the times.
Came from Hamtramck to Detroit when I was 6, lived on Eastwood and Kelly.
I grew up on St. Marys st. and Santa Maria on the northwest side. Close to 6 mile and Outer drive. I went to Isaac Newton School. Started school in 1964. What a great neighborhood it was. I really mean that, it was a great place to grow up back in the 60's even though a lot of bad things were happening in Detroit. I miss it and I think about it often.
Patrick Stevenson
I grew up on the Southwest side, Vernor - Wendell. Born at Womens Hospital,
Actually born in Booth Memorial Hospital while my parents lived on University in Allen Park. However spent almost the rest of my childhood living in SW Detroit, i.e. Logan, Gartner, the apartments above the barber shop on Vernor across from K-Andy's Bar and finally the last ten years on Wendell at Woodmere.
Trumpeteer, were you a St. Gabriel Trumpeteer??? I remember a few people from that area of Wendell. I also delivered the Detroit News on my block. Thinking back, the best route I had was Vernor east all the way to Reiden from the station...although, at the time I didn't see it that way. Could of sold alot of papers had I been so inclined.
I disagree, and you can keep your fish flys on the East side, But send me some pizza:rolleyes:
My father graduated from Cass High School in 1950. I was born 1952 at Grace Hospital [[Willis & John R), my brother was born 1954 at Holy Cross. We lived on Gratiot, East Mack and east 8 mile road.
Born at the "New" Grace Hospital. Raised in the Plymouth/Greenfield area. Attended George Ford Elementary and Jr. High, Mackenzie High School. Spent most Saturdays in the summer at the Atlas Theatre [[Plymouth Rd) and in the winter at the Mont Carlo Bowling Alley [[also in Plymouth). I could go anywhere I wanted, as long as I could ride my bike there, or take a bus. We only had one car, and my dad used it to go to work.
Born early in the morning on the Thanksgiving-that-wasn't, 1963, in the old Providence hospital. Raised in an amazing house on Appoline in the Aviation subdivision. High point in life, so far, was winning the model sailboat regatta in Kennedy Square for the under-12 age competition put on by the Detroit Parks and Rec department, I might've been the only white face from the Wheeler Center at the Brewster Projects. [[The Detroit News article seriously mis-quoted me, there is NO way I knew anything about the America's Cup boat race at that age!) Spent twelve years learning the basics well [[and how to be an outlaw in plain sight) at St. Alphonsus in Dearborn, finally launching from that place in mid-1981. It's all been downhill since...which would be fine and fun, save the bumps...and occasional traffic.
Yea Switchman, St. Gabes for sure. We've exchanged posts on the old thread about my Dad's Chevy Nova. Random thought. Would you by chance have any pictures of that old neighborhood? I have some but most of us didn't have cameras back then as you recall.
1944-1960 Wayburn and E. Warren Great place then!!!!!
Born at old Providence Hospital on the Boulevard. My Mother said they even had fireplaces. Lived on west side on Stanley St. between Brooklyn and Lincoln. Went to McKinley school at Stanley and Hamilton until they had to tear it down for an expressway then went to Tilden. Also went to Hutchins Intermediate. Would love to find out if anyone is from this area or even knows of it.
Just about the whole area I grew up in is gone like a lot of Detroit, but I still miss it and do the map searchs to check out the areas. Also went to St. Dominics on Trumbull and Warren.
Shirl
I have heard alot of stuff about the old Providence Hospital, Funny how my Step dad and the lady who I used to mow the lawn for 10 years told me the same stories of growing up round there. My step Dad grew up around Vermont and Stanley.
Hey Rich, I don't think I have any pictures of the neighborhood. I will search some albums though.
Grew up on Lenox below Jefferson, Moved to Florida in 1978
I grew up at
1. 16210 Lawton St.
2. 16885 Ardmore St.
3.12691 Mansfield St.
4. 11381 Grandmont St. [[house is gone)
5. 460 W. Forest St. Apt. 503 and 601 [[ Apt is gone)
6. 459 Prentis
Now in somewhere in the suburbs and staying there. But I go the Detroit's Lower East Side to see the my leader, The Ghettoman and the Street Prophets for the secret meetings.
9936 Sussex,
Have you ever been to Crown Lanes [[ Now Equire Lanes) on Plymouth Rd. and Weaver? The Bowling Alley have be torn down since 1993.
Danny--Never bowled at Crown Lanes. Mont Carlo was right in my neighborhood and my best friend's father worked at the lanes.
Ferndale on Maplehurst between Livernois and Pinecrest. Yea, I know it's not Detroit, but maybe it's close enough. Mom and Dad bought the house in '48 just after I was born, and finally moved out after he retired from Chrysler in '82. I'm very happy with the fact that I could drive to the house, point at the second story window on the left and say "That was my room....."
Danny:
I lived within a block or two of two of the addresses that you listed, but that was many moons ago.
We did not have the same Street Prophets. We simply wanted to "smoke dope and f--- in the streets"!
bobl,
The Ghettoman had founded the Street Prophets in 2000. I've joined in the group in 2001 and become member representative #174. Our meetings are secret and membership to our organization is rare.
9936 Sussex,
Have to ever been to the Atlas Theater in your time?
Anybody remember the Quickee Cafeterias that used to be all over downtown? There was also a hole in the wall Italian place called Luigi's I used to walk to for lunch when I worked at Himelhoch's.
Danny: Not sure what you're asking. The ATlas Theatre was on Plymouth, somewhere west of Greenfield. It was your typical neighborhood theatre. They would show 2 feature films and cartoons. Movies cost 15 cents, a box of popcorn was 10 cents. [[I'm really dating myself, but this was late 50's-early 60's). A crowd of kids would walk there and walk back. I started going when I was around 8--with the oldest kid in the crowd being 12.
