[[CNN) -- Amid a number of bills filed in Texas that address the issue of illegal immigration, one, proposed by Republican state Rep. Debbie Riddle, stands out.


As proposed, House Bill 1202 would create tough state punishments for those who "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" hire an unauthorized immigrant. Violators could face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.


But it is an exception included in the bill that is drawing attention. Those who hire unauthorized immigrants would be in violation of the law -- unless they are hiring a maid, a lawn caretaker or another houseworker."

Why am I not surprised that is in Texas?

Sounds like a reasonable law to me!

I can't fault those who come to the U.S illegally for work, if faced with the living standards that many of them endure I would probably do the same. On the other hand, it's about time we focused on the real issue, which is the American business owners who are taking advantage of the low wage expectations of illegal immigrants, and often dodging our tax laws at the same time. It's unfair to competing businesses that fully comply with our laws, and it is lowering wages for legal workers be they Americans or legal immigrants.

It's unfortunate, but it's reasonable given the vast number of illegal immigrants working for individuals who would have little ability to check the legal status of those they hire.
