Detroit has long had a specific image in the eyes of the rest of the country, if not the world. The consensus has been that Detroit is a shell of its former shelf, a Wild West of a wasteland with sky-high crime rates and miles of city blocks dotted with abandoned buildings.

Viewed as unsafe and undesirable, Detroit is seen as the place where the Boogeyman goes to vacation. And while it has rightfully earned some of this negative reputation, sweeping generalizations are both unfair and narrow. There’s more to the Motor City than you’d ever imagine. The city rides its rich history like a prized thoroughbred. And while tough times have been prevalent, the hard-working people in this still-proud city are using that very glorious past as motivation to lurch Detroit forward to better times.

What you think you know about Detroit is really only superficial. So hop in and please fasten your safety belt. We’re going to take a little ride around the city that put the world on wheels.

Aptly nicknamed The Motor City, Detroit evolved into the mecca of the American auto industry. When he formed the Ford Motor Co. in 1903, Henry Ford had no idea that he would change the world. Years later, he would guarantee workers $5-a-day wages, which was double what most manufacturing jobs paid.

The assembly line was created and perfected in Detroit, and the process of automobile production became the city’s trademark. The first paved street in America was Woodward Avenue, Detroit’s spine-like main thoroughfare that runs from the city through the suburbs.

OK wait wait.....is this the same Faux Snooze that had Glen Beck ripping Detroit apart comparing us to Hiroshima? That same outlet for right wing propaganda saying nice things about Detroit?

The point about homicides makes no sense. They seem to be mixing up numbers and rates, and there is no way the number of homicides peaked in 1990 at 582, since there over 700 in 1973. And since the population is much smaller now, you shouldn't really compare those numbers directly anyway.

While it may be fun to pick the lowest hanging fruit, Fox, that article came from askmen.com and was written by a writer for the L.A. Times.

Well, it's not an in-depth piece of journalism, but also not bad press. I don't get why people always cover the same handful of issues though. Cars, crime, music, factory labor, etc. Is that all Detroit is really good for? The article starts off by introducing these things like they are groundbreaking, but they are the same old stereotypes of Detroit that everyone already knows. There's more going on here than that.

I'm not a Glen Beck fan, but his Hiroshima observation was spot on if not a legitimate meme. I had folks in TN tell me 10 years ago that they thought Detroit looked like Hiroshima after the atomic bomb dropped. Really, how can we argue the contrary? The majority of Detroit has been wiped out. But no one bombed us. Michigan and Detroit made Detroit what it is today. We've got to own that.

fox needs a genuine detroiter to work on their detroit stories.. why couldn't they consult with WJBK?

Would have liked them to use the phrase "Arsenal of Democracy" and reintroduce the country to that under point #2,

This piece sucked as usual. I don't seem to like too many pieces written on Detroit. These writers are so lazy, totally uninspired writing. Who cares about crime rates from the 40's? This article shows that FOX news couldn't write a POSITIVE story to save their lives, furthermore exploiting their tactics of non-stop negative journalism.

Detroit journalist are no better most of the time. I would like a Free-Press story talking about Los Angeles and some of the changes they have made to get their Murder Rate back down to Pre 1940 levels. Instead I get a front page story about a new "Detroit Style" Coney dog shop on Sunset Blvd. Detroit media needs to wake up!

Fryar, Why does it matter if they call Detroit the AOD or not, those of us who care about Detroit already know all these facts. There is no sense in cramming titles down people's throats who have never cared about the history of Detroit or our country and never will. Same script, different channel....
