OK Detroit yes,
A three part question on GYRO
I have found recipes on line to make gyro,

1. Is there anywhere you can buy a loaf of gyro meat. Obviously not as large as you see spinning in some restaurants.
2. Where is the best gyro in town.

I used to like Golden Fleece, have not been there in ages.
Zeff’s in Eastern Market is excellent, they do a great gyro.
In Lansing the Lakewood Deli does a great gyro breakfast.
Olgas and any other frozen gyro are pretty bad.

1. The correct pronunciation.

I prefer the silent G, yuroo.

Golden Fleece is still quite good, but not quite what it was. I would still vote for Golden Fleece.

Same ownership, though. Same waiters as when my dad went there 30 years ago.

In the suburbs, I would vote for Pita Cafe, in Oak Park and Birmingham.

Golden Fleece also gets my vote in the city;; Phoenix coney island on Van Dyke and 17 makes a good one too
You can buy sliced gyro meat at many deli counters; I know that Randazzo's carries it and I think Vince and Joe's does too

You can buy a whole gyro loaf at Hiller's Markets in the deli section.

"Gyro loaf" may be my favorite phrase I've learned this year. ;)

I thought it was Greek for "mystery meat"?

The greek place on Warren by Woodward [[is it still there?) has the big leg[[?) they shave the meat off of. I thought that place was pretty good. Don't they make gyros with the leg[[?) shavings too, or no?

have you tried the gyro loaf at Hiller's?
I like their web site, next time I am headed to Detroit looks like a stop at the Berkely store.

Although I'm no expert [[I usually get the Kabob's)... isn't that leg... just "dis-assembled" meat that has been "re-assembled" into something resembling a leg?:confused:

The best Gyro I ever had was when I was working in Chicago. Nikki's Gyros in Cal City. Everything else pales in comparison.

Every time I make it back, I eat at Olga's twice a day. I know, hero-light, but I love that place. Greektown, Pegasus was my fav, but any of them are excellent. Big dinner, evening at the Old Shillalleagh, nothing else compares.

Produce Palace deli in Warren sells gyro meat, already sliced by the pound. It's easier to make it [[and cheaper) than buying a loaf.
