Simple pleasures during the downturn?

I've read a few things recently coming out of Detroit's newspapers and blogs regarding simple pleasures during the recession- like staying at home with the kids, having time to volunteer, fixing up part of the house... Wondering what your thoughts are on this? Are there things that Detroit could benefit from that are specifically a product of the recession? Is there good in the bad?
