Detroit gets (mostly) rave reviews from influential ASAE

The association of folks who plan conventions for a living is having its big annual gathering in Detroit, and the city is getting mostly upbeat reviews three days into what some have dubbed the "Super Bowl of trade shows.

And with the exception of a few dozen attendees whose bus driver got lost Saturday while shuttling them between hotels and an evening event at the Henry Ford in Dearborn, Detroit is getting high marks.

"The evolution Detroit has made in the last few years is incredible, compared with what they had to offer before. This is kind of a coming-out party for them," said Rachel Wimberly, president and editor-in-chief of Trade Show News Network, who has been attending ASAE events for many years.

If the convention bureau's twitter is any indication Detroit is going be getting a lot of these people's business in the future. "EVERY Detroit person I've met is awesome!! What a fantastic city! Unlike most convention attendees, who head back and forth from their hotel to Cobo, they did a great job of making sure these decision makers saw everything the area has to offer - casinos, Riverwalk, The Henry Ford, sports, museums, restaurants, Corktown, Shinola, etc. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the payoff.

While flying into Metro for a weekend HS Reunion my wife and i sat around a couple of the attendees of this conference. Had a great chance to REALLY talk up the city, suggested some things for them to do like walk down to Millender and take the PM, go to Fishbone's, check out the newly opened David Whitney, ride Belle Isle [[which we did Sunday and we were amazed at the improvements), go early for their event at the Henry Ford, etc. Also discussed the bad rap Downtown continues to get from those who haven't been there in ten years. Also gave them a bit of my experience/history growing up there in the 50's/60's. Overall they were truly excited about coming in!
