Bring Syrian Refugees to Detroit

"Bringing them here makes sense. The state already has one of the largest Syrian immigrant communities in the nation. There are a number of public and private support agencies in place with expertise in dealing with Arab newcomers.

In addition, Michigan has an abundance of inexpensive, available housing particularly in Detroit and its other urban centers. Detroit, with up to 80,000 abandoned structures, would benefit from refugees willing to repair and homestead those properties

And a large percentage of the refugees from Syria have the education and skills needed to fill the nearly 100,000 jobs that have gone unfilled because of a lack of trained workers."

Detroit is already the #1 destination for Iraqi refugees, and generally one of the biggest cities for refugees anywhere in the Americas.

But almost no refugees live in the city of Detroit. If there's an influx of Syrians they'll probably go where the other Middle Eastern refugees go- Sterling Heights and environs, mostly. You can't force refugees to live in the city proper, and they aren't stupid. They want safety and good schools and a livable, friendly environment for getting established.

I read something about them possibly fitting in with a particular neighborhood revitalization in Detroit, and I think it might be Chaldean Town. Not sure how that would work, but there is a core neighborhood there to work with.

Chaldeantown doesn't have Chaldeans anymore. Nor are many houses even standing. That area doesn't have much of anyone or anything. Doesn't seem like a logical place to house migrants, unless you're going to build them new homes and ban them from leaving the city.

And I don't think Syrians [[almost all Muslim) would have cultural connections with Chaldeans anyways.

In today's political atmosphere I would say if any do come it will be few. Donald Trump is the top GOP candidate and the only thing he seems to be running on is stopping immigrants people want to see it stopped or slowed down and you have the Islamophobia factor people fear it look what just happened at 15 and Mound.

Good ideal, let's put them in a new community in Detroit's west side over by Woodrow Wilson St. south of Davison HWY. where that once Nation of Islam Mosque lies. They could settle down in the run down ghetto. Build their homes and businesses and called "Little Syria!" The Only problem is will low-income black folks who are dominate in their hood accept or reject them?

It's better for them that they settle in European Nations [[Like Germany) and have a growing Muslim community. They would scare the Islamophobic Roman Catholic Christians who called their "New Holy Roman Empire" out of their homes. Then comes the 5th crusade.

What choice do they have? Move to Dearborn and mingle the Iraqis and Lebonese folks. Or them be prisoners without a country.

What would Trump do about this new wave of Arab immigration coming to the U.S? This is more than a Hispanic problem.

This is the kind of excellent idea that we don't often hear from our politicians. The only problem I see is that even if we get all 10,000 refugees slated for the U.S., its only about 5-10% of what's needed to repopulate Detroit.

Detroit needs good, hard-working immigrants. While no doubt there are some terrorists and fools in the ranks, they'll more than be outweighed by the laborers and doctors who will bring their energy to Detroit.

As to getting along with other Middle East ethnic or religious groups? I say -- you're in America now. We ignore these differences and we get along with others. So suck it up and get to work.

Henry Ford lured thousands of Yemeni Arab Muslims and gave them homes on Dix and Vernor Rd. and thus Arabian Village was born. More Arabs from Lebanon and Iraq came to Dearborn. Some settle in parts of SW Detroit neighborhoods. Other went farther up to Detroit's West Side up to Plymouth Rd. and Grand River Rd. near Oakman Blvd. block in the 1960s. More middle income black folks push them out and Arabs settled in W. Warren Ave. Dearborn's Eastborn community) from Wyoming Ave. and further westward to Dearborn Heights to Garden City and Westland.

2. Chaldeans from Iraq came to Detroit nearly 1920s and settled from Beaufait St to E. Grand Blvd. until they move further to W. Seven Mile Rd from Woodward Ave to John R. Rd. and Chaldeantown was born. Now its almost dead! The Chaldeans are live all over the place from Oak Park and Southfield to West Bloomfield areas.

3. The Chinese came to Detroit since the 1860s and settle near Corktown to Skid Row area on 3rd Street from W. Fort St. to Plum Street. and Chinatown was born. The new Lodge FWY. force the Chinese to move the South end of Cass Corridor on the corner of Cass and Peterboro St. for a Second Chinatown. Then DEAD [[C)KRAK HEADS ZOMBIES and the death of Vincent Chin put an end to Detroit's Chinatown and most Chinese folks are living in Madison Heights along John R. Rd from 12 to 14 Mile Rd. and Troy to mingle with East Indians and other Asian folks.

4. In the 1920s there was a sudden influx of Mexicans settle in Corktown areas at Bagley St. and Mexican Village was born. By the 1930s Detroit's Mexican communities expanded further to Detroit's West Side up to W. Warren and W. Grand Blvd. However during the Great Depression repatriate over 80,000 Mexican families back to their war torn homeland. leaving 5,000 legal U.S. born Mexican families stuck in Mexican Village. By the 1960s the building of I-75 FWY. split Mexican Village in half. The high businesses area west of the FWY. and Mexicantown was born. the low Mexican businesses east of the FWY. remains Mexican Village to this day. Today Detroit's Mexican-Hispanic communities grew back slowly and expand further westward dominating SW Detroit. and parts of Detroit's west side.

There are some folks who are settling down in Detroit and Hamtramck borders because the GM Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.


1. The second influx of Yemenis came to Detroit-Hamtramck border and settle in Dwyer St. between Mt. Elliot St. and Conant St. and " Little Yemen " was born. They converted a once Polish Catholic Church into a Mosque.

2. By 1990s and sudden boom of Bengladeshis came to settle on the Detroit side in Conant Gardens and 'Benglatown' was born. Most of them came from Astoria sub-division in Brooklyn, N.Y.C.


Detroit will welcome new immigrants but the main point is will they stay? Will they have jobs, housing, medical, schools safer neighborhoods and mingle with ethnic folks? If not, just like the Chaldeans and Chinese and former White European descent Detroiters, they will leave right away.

urban Detroit should be more racially diverse, however it happens. it needs more locally-based lucrative industries, local entrepreneurs, more styles of housing, more accessible job training, more green open spaces, and high quality local schools, public and private.

You might want to travel to Fla and see the cause and effect of a large resettlement of immigrants.

In Tampa they excepted 3000 Iranians,they have their own little click and three years later they still do not assimilate.

Granted immigrants of the 20s took generations.

There is a difference between coming to America and becoming an American for what it stands for and coming to America for what she has to offer.

Canada is a liberal asylum country for Colombians "fleeing" FARC,maybe the Canadian board members can offer insite on how they assimilate.

Germany is excepting 300,000 based on replacing an aging population in the workforce,no Viagra there I guess,considering they are going to have to support them for at least 10 years.

When you see the clips there seems to be a large amount of 20 and 30 somethings there,why do they not believe in something enough to fight for it?

If you just take the small amount of 300,000 going to Germany they all converged on one border,why cannot they group there and organize an army,300,000 is an army.

Sorry,but at the border give them a M16,a case of ammo and a case of rations,because you really have to wonder if they are not willing to take a stand and fight for what they believe in and are willing to walk away from their fellow citizens leaving them in even more dire need are they going to stand for anything in their new host country?

How does one justify that because you have the strength and ability to walk a 100 miles you do not have a problem leaving the sick,elderly,and those who who can not make it,behind for the slaughter?

If I as an American decides to move to another country it would cost up to $500,000 in some cases for citizenship.Spain,$500,000 property purchase.Every other country you must prove income of at least $2000 a month before citizenship.

So really if I wanted to go to Spain I would just boat over there and jump on a refugee ship and gain free entry along with free meals and housing.

The easiest way to bring immigrants to Detroit and quality ones would be to support immigration reform,it is pointless if you have to support and educate somebody for the first 5 years before any noticeable results,or maybe educate and train the ones already there as a start.
