Obama Turns To A New Campaign Phrase: 'Change Is'
WASHINGTON -- It's been a subtle alteration but an alteration nonetheless. In his past two campaign speeches, President Barack Obama has adopted a construct that puts particular emphasis on how his 2008 promise of change has resulted in practical life improvement.

At a fundraiser Wednesday night in New York City, the new line was on display, with the president deploying the phrase "Change is" on a dozen occasions.

"Change is the first bill I signed into law -- a law that says you get an equal day's work -- somebody who puts in an equal day's work should get equal day's pay."

"Change is the decision we made to rescue the auto company from collapse, even when some politicians were saying we should let Detroit go bankrupt."

"Change is the decision we made to stop waiting for Congress to do something about our addiction to oil and finally raise fuel-efficiency standards for the first time in 30 years."

"Change is health care reform that we passed after a century of trying."

And so on.

The formulation actually debuted at a Nov. 14 Obama campaign event at the Aulani Disney Resort in Hawaii, where he declared "Change is" on 10 occasions. Prior to that, Obama hadn't used the rhetorical device at all.

Too bad that the average independent/moderate voter has yet to see the impact of any of the "Change is..." he is bragging about. Here a few of Obama's "Change is..." that are more visible:

Under the Obama Administration, "Change is..."

• "celebrating when the Unemployment Rate surprisingly reaches 8.6%"
• "increasing the Federal Debt in three years time by an amount greater than the prior 43 Presidents combined"
• "making it legal to slaughter and eat horses"
• "presidential vacationing in both Hawaii and Martha's Vineyard, instead of Crawford, TX "

A good simple campaign slogan that the masses will/should understand. Using that he could branch off into statements like... I could have given you even more "change" if Congress have done their jobs, the Repubs didn't try to stop, stonewall, delay, lie about virtually every policy issue I put forth.

Its a good line to tout the accomplishments, and talk about what could have been if the politics weren't so partisan in DC.

When you run on your record, as Obama will have to do in this election versus running on an abstract theme like he did in 2008 its best to get the accomplishment out there, and be able to explain the failures in a way people can understand and accept.

- With the number of jobs leaving for China and India, and all the imports they ship here... 8.6% would almost sound unsustainable...

- Yeah... winding down the 2 wars of his predecessor doesn't help. [[Did they ever find those weapons of mass destruction, by the way?)

- You pity the horses? It's the lamb's I feel sorry for.... but you probably love lamb chops to go with your mint jelly.... They eat horse in Europe, France especially, less so in Germany. Supposedly since horses are cleaner animals than cows or pigs... also the French need to have something to go with those Freedom Fries...

- last I heard Obama never bought a residence in Crawford.... :cool:

Um, er - you best stop while you're ahead [[smile) with those conservative 'talking points'.... [[what even the most reasonable criticisms of this administration are summed up to be)

It's unfortunate Obama is running unchallenged by the Democrats.

IMO, that is in part because some dems are too afraid of being thought of as 'racists' to do that or offer and even state in public their 'private' criticisms or concerns. No one wants to be touted is non-progressive parroting 'repub' tea party 'talking points'. Oh the horror of being accused of such!

PS. Umm, for the record I am a registered 'dem', but I do like to peek 'outside' of that partisan box from time to time as required.

yeah, as if there was an actual progressive anywhere in the mainstream democratic party. The vast majority of dems [[including Obama) are politically around where Barry Goldwater was in the 1960s. [[if they weren't, such items as the card check provision for labor would be law now) That was considered radically conservative back then, yet now it is radically liberal? no, it's just that the right has flown WAY off the deep end and dragged the rest of the country with them, so what seemed way to the right is now seen as left of center.

Hardly. My father worked for him, I've read his books. What it DOES demonstrate is how little you know about what is happening in US politics right now.
Obama has cut more New Deal type programs than ANY republican ever did. Fact, plain and simple. that is truth over rhetoric. Obama's rhetoric was always more progressive than his actions He has done nothing to help labor.

Most importantly, Goldwater NEVER let his ideology stop him from compromising, and he never became the vile, hateful politician that has become the norm in the republican part leadership.

He told Bob Dole "we're the new liberals, imagine that" during Dole's campaign


There is only the insurance reform that swerves off the goldwater policies

He was totally dismayed by the influence of the religious right on the conservative movement. Later in his life, he disavowed many of his most extreme positions as well.

Hell, to some of these right wing loons, Reagan was too liberal too.
