City Airport Control Tower Axed
Quote:
Detroit — The Federal Aviation Administration has announced it will close the control tower at Detroit's Coleman A. Young International Airport one month from today.
Known by many as Detroit City Airport, the shutdown is one of 150 small airport tower closures due to go into effect by April 7.
The closures, announced by the FAA on Tuesday, are due to the automatic federal sequestering cuts that went into effect on March 1.
But the closure of the airport tower — which handles only about 50 flights a day — doesn't mean the end of service.
In situations when there is no control tower, or the tower is understaffed, pilots coordinate their arrivals and departures with each other.

Detroit City Airport as I remember it
I learned to fly here in 1943. I then joined a group of ten engineers from Packard Motor Car Co. in the ownership of a Taylorcraft airplane.
