Windsor Mayor's Plan to Distribute Unused US Vaccines quashed by bureaucracy

Thanks to a ruling by Canada Border Services Agency under the puzzling worry about 'security' a plan to provide our Windsor neighbors with unused US vaccines has fallen apart. [Getting vaccinated isn't security?] Imagine there was no border and it was Rochester or Southfield being denied vaccines! Seems ridiculous to me.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens spent weeks pursuing a mission - netting surplus COVID-19 vaccines in Michigan and getting them into the arms of fellow Canadians before the doses expire.

The 49-year-old lawyer tried to come up with every way imaginable to make the impossible possible - even inoculating Canadians with U.S. shots at a border clinic inside the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel under the Detroit River.

“We're not trying to send a man to the moon here. We're using the infrastructure to accomplish a shared goal,” he said. “For me, it's just about doing the right thing. ... This is a sensible, reasonable alternative to vaccines heading to the landfill.”
For Dilkens, the effort has been a “long, frustrating road,” but it's now over after the Canada Border Services Agency said no to the plan because of security and other reasons.

“It's dead,” he said recently of the effort that he said could have brought 5,000 surplus COVID-19 vaccines within a twoday turnaround to Canadians from sources in Michigan. “Our government has killed it. Our government will not let this happen.”

I agree the bureaucracy was silly but Canada has more than enough vaccines now anyway. Because of hesitancy of people afraid to mix vaccines, clinics here in the Toronto area were giving people their choice of 3 vaccines for their 2nd doses this week. We're joining the U.S. as far as wealthy countries wasting doses now. I have a friend who is a pharmacist who says they waste Moderna doses every day.

I'm waiting to start reading about mass vaccines being dumped into landfills because they're out of date. At that point, sooner or later we'll all be vaccinated. Some of us twice.

Canada has made a great vaccine comeback and now has a higher percentage of its population completely vaccinated than the U.S..

It seems like there must be some country out there that would accept the vaccinations.

Yes. Canada additionally in tracking who is vaccinated, has been prudent [without apology] in maintaining/ closing their borders - which is apparently not a priority in the US!

Maybe it’s because so many are so easily manipulated into following the belief that it is only right wing conspiracy nuts not getting the vaccinations.

Or even as silly as saying they are going door to door to make sure everybody has the shot,if that was even believable,then they would have been going door to door every 4 years on that other thing,in order to make sure everybody was participating.

The tax man used to go door to door to collect taxes,but not anymore.

Some of the vaccinations have a 3 day shelf life before they are not effective,1 day for shipping leaves 2 days to inject,I guess we could send them over the border,it would be that much less to dump in our landfills.

But it is easy to keep a narrative going,it does not have to be true or false it just has to sound good and if you throw a right winger nut job into the mix as a boogeyman,somebody becomes your savior and you will be indebted to them for the rest of your life.

Not to even mention the vaccinations were fast tracked by somebody that most spent a lot of time telling the world they wanted nothing to do with the evil right winger bastard and now they are begging everybody as they flip.

I may be considered a right winger by some,hate to break the narrative of conditioning on where we get our information from but I refer to the CDC,so if you consider them spreading conspiracies,I would say it would not be the first time in history they have and will not be the last.

All you really have to do is tell people what they want to hear, while throwing free money at them,and they will blindly follow you off of the cliff.

The one vaccination that starts with a M is at its highest level of protection once injected for 90 days,anybody figured out what happens after that 90 days and what level of protection you have?

How come the Canadian government does not support their own corona virus vaccination production facilities?

They have developed their own version of the vaccination but threatened to move the production facilities out of the county because they are getting no support from the federal government.

So close the border,but import the vaccinations from other countries while not allowing the production in your own country.

Plausible Deniability,it covers the Canadian politicians ass in case something goes wrong,they can blame it on the Americans.

If they were true believers in what they are selling,why would they need to take steps to be able to distance themselves from the source at a moments notice.

It has nothing to do with going door to door for the shot and everything to do with conditioning the public to except the concept of the government going door to door and think it is in the best interests of the population.

And yes there are politicians that have advocated going door to door in order to collect guns,it’s not a conspiracy theory,it is a fact.

Not that it matters because there are not enough qualified medical personnel in the country to even begin to go door to door and administer it.

But flash a few clips on the news of a certain hand picked demographic of the population receiving the shot in the front porch,and most believe it can actually happen.

Yikes, you actually have to read/ watch a Newsmax site etc. to consider how far some really want to go to achieve their version of utopia? LOL!

Oh BTW, I'm vaxxed [lest I be deemed as a bad, heretical person], but I am also aware that it's not solely the right wing crowd who've chosen not too. Further who says some wingers aren't.

And let's not mention [or maybe we should], the daily inflow thru our open southern borders: the unvaccinated, those untracked for vaccinating.

Yep. There's a percentage of Black people [hardly fitting the right-wing narrative in many cases] determinedly not vaccinating.

I am, but I get that history has shown us that we best not be 'FIRST' in line when experimental drugs are administered - NO MATTER what administration or promises! Even with the all-smiles Biden/ Harris set! Especially so some would argue.

That's one of the reasons why I waited - not opting for the jab immediately.

I know what socialism is and Canada is far from it. It has a free market capitalist economy with a major stock exchange in Toronto. Compare that to Cuba or North Korea. It is ridiculous bordering on ignorant to call Canada socialist. A lot of people confuse a country with a decent social safety net superior to that of the USA socialist, but it doesn't make it so. Both are fully capitalist economies.

But yet they are still the only country in the G7 that does not have a government school lunch program,so everything comes at a price,but I guess because children are not productive members of society yet and you can always make more.

I would not view Canada as socialistic in that sense of the term but they do seem borderline democratic dictatorship and people seem to be more willing to give up their personal rights for a false sense of security.

Notice the news clips are all of an African American receiving the shot on their front porch,then the next story is the narrative that keeps getting repeated,it’s them right wingers that are not getting the shot.

If they actually believed what they were pushing,their target market would be showing clips of a red neck right winger that had a 4x4 in their driveway while flying a Trump flag,receiving the shot on their front porch.

I understand why people want to get the shot and I also understand why people do not,even more so in the south where the general consensus of the African American community is you go to the hospital to die and have long memories of the government saying we are here to help,all you have to do is take this shot.

I never understood about a party that relies on the African American community to keep power least understands their concerns and how to address them.

It does not help that the government has been supplying information subject to change at any given moment with government officials themselves displaying the hypocrisy along the way that fans the flames.

But like the virus itself,everything is fluid,subject to change,vaccination or not they have repeatedly said that there will be a surge every time a mutation appears,when it does the blame is not on the mutation but the individual.

From day one it has always been about the individual protecting themselves personally,if it was not, you would not have a bunch of vaccinated super spreaders running around with no mask spreading the virus to the most vulnerable,that were ready to burn anybody doing the same thing 90 days ago at the stake in the public square.

In the beginning they recognized that the virus effects everybody different and there were those that were less susceptible to it’s wrath with some even having a natural immunity,so why would they take a shot and go from no risk to a potentially risky situation?

When they first tested the vaccinations,it was with a select group of perfectly healthy individuals,they screened them first and omitted them from the tests if they thought there was going to be a problem.

So it has always been about an acceptable level of loss and deal with the ramifications later.

I guess the positive in all of this is we have managed to totally eradicate the cold and flu season and save those 60-80,000 lives lost every year due to that,I guess there is a silver lining in everything.

By the way, there are school lunch programs, we just don't threaten children and cut them off for non-payment as I've seen many stories of in the U.S.

I stand by what I posted Canada is the only country in the G7 that does not have a federal school lunch program.

Toronto and Quebec are like little separate countries operating within the realm of Canada as a country,lots of other little cities that do not have those resources cannot paint such a rosy picture.

The purpose of a federal school lunch program is so everybody can take advantage no matter what size their city or town is and not just those who are fortunate enough to live in certain éreas that have a higher income.

An example would be,the cruise lines in Canada and the states originally banned people that received the shot but received the second shot of a different brand,then it was discovered that it was okay to to mix the shots.

Back to the original question of how come the Canadian Government does not except the left over vaccinations from the States?

There are really no left overs,some have a shelf life that expires within a few days if not used,some require to be held at certain temperature before being used,the logistics of collecting 50 or 1000 vials from thousands of independent hospitals then the redistribution of those vials.

It is just easier for a government to order 1 or 2 million at a time from one source so you are not adding further complications to an already complicated situation.

Of course Richard didn't say Federal gov't school lunch program. He simply said government program, which is like saying Canada doesn't have universal health care because the provinces each have their own program. Anyway, like most on here I'll stop arguing with someone who twists every word and phrase to suit him.
Regarding school lunch program nutrition, Michelle Obama worked to improve the nutrition, which of course is enviable, but they did find most kids just didn't eat it and it was wasted. You need to educate kids about nutrition starting in 1st grade and hope they start wanting it I guess.

Yep. And not that surprising. Too often we're used [particularly this go-around] as the club to justify and beat into place ideologies and policies we don't ALL necessarily agree with. Including, for example, the soft-bigotry [only thinly disguised] that we need not learn the technologies and ways of the 'west' in all of its evil ascendancy etc. Ridiculous!

Again we're being held back from knowledge, and TOLD what we need to know - that's best for us! As during slavery! While other nations go forward with the serious work of education and achievement.
