California comes out #32 in this ranking. It's economy is rated 4th. in the Country while it ranks #50, dead last, for quality of life. This article credits high tech for the good economy. I would add that California also benefits greatly by being the center of so much Asian trade; linking Asian manufacturing and cheap labor with its U.S. market.

California has the 7th. worst income inequality in the U.S.. Its 1% averages $1.4M and its bottom 99% average $49k of income annually. It voted 62% Clinton and 33% Trump.

aj, It doesn't matter, California is a one party state. California policies and laws are made by Democrats. If California has very low income equality, you an hardly infer that it is because Republicans get outvoted there all the time. Of the 10 states listed with the most income inequality, 6 were blue CA, NJ, NY, CT, MA, IL, 2 were purple NV, FL, and 2 were Republican TX and WY. NY has the most income inequality of any state. Republicans aren't responsible for income inequality in CA; Democrats are.

Yes, California has high income inequality...because the richest people in America choose to live there for a wide variety of reason [[good weather, ocean coast, work in Silicon Valley, etc.). Is it really better to say that West Virginia or Alabama or Mississippi are better off than CA because those states are more uniformly poor and thus have less income inequality? Which party runs those states again?

If you notice in California the Hillary supporters were largely in the inner large cities so why is there so much income inequality in the inner cities that are under democrat control ?

So beyond the debate as to which party/ worldview rules, can California continue on this track? Does a germ plague [[btw, microbs care little about your political affiliation) need to happen before they address this problem? I think even rank-and-files liberals are getting angry about this down-turn of their cities, especially parents with children living in such conditions.

Well, as long as the taxpayer working stiffs pay the power-elite [[insert whichever party/ politicians you love or hate) can continue looking the other way [[as they have for decades). They can afford to. Pacific Heights, Haight Ashbury and Potrero Hill etc. are far away enough yet from the dirt and filth. It does not affect them in a direct manner. Not yet.

Because the left elite are behaving like the republican elite when they get their turn, apparently.

I think half of the state wants to succeed from the other half.

They remind me of some of the immigrants from other countries,you moved from a place that clearly was not working out for you and then want to change the place that you moved to,into what you left.

If I want to eat red meat and do not want to drive a Prius everywhere,that is my business and I do not need some government regulation telling me I have to.

That is their favorite thing,do not like something,get the government to pass a mandate or law to stop it.

The political map is the major cities are blue, the rest of the state is red but the 3 major cities try and control the whole state,thank god for the electoral vote when it comes to presidential elections.

aj, California is a one party state in which that Party allows income inequality. Whether or not rich people choose to live there for good weather as you claimed, the US News article lists California at the bottom for quality of life. That is after averaging California's 1% into the mix. It is still #50. If billionaires moved to Norway for skiing or job opportunities, I doubt that Norway's government would condone California's income differential and homelessness. Scandinavian social democrats and California Democrats created different outcomes.

California was mostly republican until relatively recently. There were only 4 Democratic governors in California during the entire 20th Century. There have only been 3 the past 50 years [[Jerry Brown served twice). It's not until the past 20 years that there have been more terms served by democrats than republicans, and even then a republican served 2006-2010.

A lot of "progressive" democrats live there now too. And not-so-progressive democrats [[including some who call themselves "progressive"). But quite a few republicans and "conservatives" remain -- especially in the valley, the rural areas, and the south of the state.

Of the three big cities only San Francisco is overwhelmingly democratic. LA is mostly democratic, but elects republicans too. San Diego and Orange County are mostly republican.

I know San Francisco fairly well and don't consider anywhere a no-go zone. It's an incredible place to live. But I agree it has problems. Especially the income inequality and segregation that run rampant there. It seems to me those are related to the fake progressivism that characterizes quite a few. And the powerful influence of real estate interests. Especially when it comes to NIMBYism with regard to affordable housing [[which brings us back to income inequality). I find it especially disingenuous when "progressives" fight affordable housing anywhere close to their own homes. [[Usually they say it is "incompatible with the character of the neighborhood.")

But that's a problem in wealthier neighborhoods across the whole country. Marin County, Westchester County, the Detroit area too.

And yes, the definition of "affordable" is often ridiculous.

The grossly outsized influence of real estate developers and landlords in local politics is also to blame.

Those run-down blocks in San Francisco's Tenderloin? Maybe that's where you mean by "no-go zone". I don't vouch for any of these suggestions, but this shows it clearly isn't. And we can almost entirely blame the landlords, real estate developers, and the local government officials they've bought for the problems that exist there. I doubt they'll last much longer, though -- true to their plan.

Regarding the US News measure of quality of life, it seems air quality plays a hugely disproportionate role in their rankings. No wonder the top states by their measure are rural northern states with small populations. I don't buy it. Cities cause air pollution. [[Thanks, petroleum-fueled cars.) Especially when they're surrounded by mountains and get lots of sun. But that doesn't mean people don't enjoy living in and around cities, especially ones with mountains and sun. It's often quite the opposite, isn't it?

Let's consider California's supposedly terrible quality of life.

Would you rather live in North Dakota or California? North Dakota ranked first for quality of life according to US News, California last.

If North Dakota, I don't think I'm reaching when I say I'm sure your opinion is in the tiny minority. Almost everyone would disagree. California has 52 times North Dakota's population in an area 2.3 times as big.

Mind you, I agree California has lots of problems. But quality of life isn't among them. There are reasons so many prefer to be homeless in LA instead of Fargo. Like so many others they've produced, this US News ranking is highly suspect.

That said I agree with you the powers-that-be could be and should be doing more to address inequality. But as is often the case, on a local level, those powers-that-be are real estate developers and landlords, and the local government officials they've bought.

I don't have any science to support my hypothesis, but I don't think most influential landlords and developers, even in San Francisco, are democrats. President Trump, his [[still for now) Senior Advisor Jared Kushner, and their families are major players who belong to that class.

bust, That depends. If I was a multi-millionaire and money was no object and I could build walls around my estate, I would rather live in California. I'm sure there are some good private schools there for the kids and of course all the fancy restaurants and good weather. But I'm not a multi-millionaire so I would prefer to live in a place where my family is safe, there are good public schools, I can afford housing, the children aren't subjected to liberal brainwashing, ND's murder rate is only 58% that of CA's, etc.. California's personal income tax is the highest in the Country and its effective total income tax is fifth highest. I did live in California for awhile and left in large part because government stacked the deck so much in favor of the rich there including allowing or creating artificial shortages of housing to drive up prices. Last year, 142,000 more people moved from CA to other states than moved to CA from other states for those kind of reasons I wound up living and raising family in the midwest and never regretted it. However, California, in my opinion, offers more vacation opportunities than North Dakota. I would rather go to California for vacations.

Speaking of income equality, the Bank of North Dakota used to provide interest free loans to its college students to already inexpensive public universities. Unfortunately for North Dakotans, Obama expanded the federal role in student loans causing the end of that North Dakota program.

It is far from perfect but I can not understand the logic of villainizing the 4th best economy [[according to this article) among states based on not agreeing with their local politics.

Clearly California has something functioning economically much better then Michigan has over the last half a century and what those economic factors are should be identified.

A analytical approach does not require political idiological input in the slightest.

Take the top 10 performing state economies, find what they have in common then implement those economic factors here then take the 10 worst states find what they share and dump that garbage.

Never for a second lose sight of the fact that we have to compete directly against 49 other states for economic success.

Winners never get caught up in the bullshit. Losers always do exactly that.

California does have a strong economy based on Silicon Valley innovation, a healthy litigious atmosphere offering a million lawsuits a year, Hollywood and its sidekick pornography industry, and is the major hub of Asian trade. Chicago and the midwest used to be the hub of trade when most things were manufactured in the U.S.. Since our political elites of both parties sent so many jobs abroad, California ports became the center of trade. I have a cousin who was one of the first people Hyundai hired in the US. She did very well at Detroit's expense and is an example of how California profits from its import trade. It is in California's financial interest to keep flooding the U.S. with products of cheaper Asian labor. That brings us back to income inequality. Not only does California sport its own income inequality, it benefits from having moved American jobs to Asia; nice foreign corporate headquarters for Asian companies in California vs. rusting shuttered factory towns in the mid-west.

The US News article already took California's economy into account. That's one big reason why California ranked 32nd of 50 overall. California still ranks near the bottom or at the bottom of income inequality, public school scores, homelessness, high state taxes, net out migration of state to state residents escaping, housing costs and quality of life. Considering that California is a one party state and that party claims to support working people, this is at least an irony. I think its a warning.

There is way to much weight given to political party leanings in The State of California instead of its economic strengths and diversity. [[Please take a deep breath and understand the context of 'diversity' here is economic)

Trying to understand how Michigan could compete with Germany, China France, Japan or the UK would be utterly pointless because we play under the umbrella of the US government. We play by their rules, love them or hate them, that is how it works.

Amazingly to some, so does the State of California have to play by Uncle Sams rules and their economy is immense.

Ignoring that California is growing its economy faster than Michigan and has consistently for a long time strictly on current party politics would defy reason and intelligence.

Take a pass on the social issues as much as anyone wants but a deep detailed study of what is working effectively in California is highly valuable to States that give a damn about the economic prosperity of their own citizens.

Sitting around waiting for California to fail or fall into the ocean based on political ideology and hatred of where the opposition is currently in power makes no sense. There is far more at stake for Michiganders than the latest fad on cable TV where selling commercials for their own captive market is all that matters to them.

Gee they didn't vote for 8yrs or return an address validation letter from the state. Sounds like a good check and balance of the voting roles.

^^^ Yes, that's a way to look at it. There have to be some standards for voting participation.

My thoughts- I don't like it.

PG&E is filing for bankruptcy. PG&E is facing $30B of liabilities because its equipment played a role in wildfires. However this plays out, when PG&E or its successor gets past its liability problems and paying for part of the fire damage, insurers will want more money for liability insurance protection. California's electric rates are already the highest in the Country. The $30B is a bonanza for California's law firms.

730,000 California electrical customers are without power to help prevent forest fires. This is unheard of. I haven't heard much about gas pumps not working, air conditioners not working, schools and businesses without lights, or groceries meat sections. I would have expected more coverage about so many people doing without electricity over such a wide swath of California. Portable generators must be selling well.

It's been all over WJR news; I think it's like rolling blackouts,but more extended. Supposed to be over by Monday, I think they said. The thing that interested me was that, instead of "cooling centers" they have set up "plug in centers" so people can keep their phones and tablets charged.

The response was predictable,cut the power.

Interesting how interviews people are blaming the power company and saying it is a public utility when it is not,they are saying a billion plus dollars in order to bury the lines,everybody knows who pays for it in the end.

Maybe they can divert some of thier sanctuary monies to the actual residents that they serve?

You would think so,but on the other hand there is pelosi who is the 3 most powerful person in government after spending 30+ years as a representative of the people,while the the people she claims to actually represent sleep in the streets.

I read somewhere that there was 500,000 people in the mental institutions when they shut them down and now it is down to less then 25,000.

Amazon,Bill and Melinda Gates,Rockefeller’s etc. May take advantage of tax loops but they also pump billions back into the economy through charitable organizations,Amazon has dumped close to a billion into affordable and homeless housing in Seattle alone.

Even in these threads you see the argument of California is the economy of a lot of countries,sure they have riches but that is viewing the dollars over the people.

It is not the crazy’s or the mentally ill or the homeless or anybody else outside of short term political goals in order to win the next election.

Vote for me I will create a tax that will cure homeless,while driving the taxpayers out of the state.

Then people support them because they think they have the answers then flee the state because the decisions that they made were wrong,then move elsewhere and keep the same mentality that ruined the place they left.

Nobody really cares,but they do and that is why so many find it hard to understand Trump supporters.

Because he actually does what he says he is going to do,without trying to make everybody happy and sets goals.

It does not matter,Democrats or Republicans we need to be holding them all to the fire.

The new ones like Cortez and even this guy if he were to run and win they can spout all the rhetoric they like but because they are new to the game they meen nothing until they get at least 10 years under thier belt in the game.

It is just like the corporate world,a new hire comes on all full of energy and the older ones tell them to shut up until they learn how to play the game.

What is it going to take for the Democratic Party to wake up and stop claiming to be the party of the people,they cannot see how most of thier major cities are run and for whom?

I like Detroit’s mayor as a Democrat,he is not doing things in order to retain power,he is doing things that prepare the city for today and for tomorrow,that is his job.

There are some well run democratic cities,how come they can do it while cities like Baltimore,San Fran,Los Angeles and even now Portland and Seattle are being driven into the ground?
