Lisa Mullins interviewed Kent Ekerich of Sweden's new ruling party, the interview aired today. It was illuminating of the effects of extremes: Ekerich insisted Islam is a viewpoint, and was threatening to Swedes who are starting to not feel at home in their own country.

What is you basis for suggesting that Gingrich is religious? He may have tried to lead the religious right but I don't know of any reason to consider Gingrich religious if that was what you were implying.

Newt is about as religious as Saddam Hussein was. They are religious when it's convenient, and use it as a prop to rally their radical base.

Anyway, we have laws that hopefully will protect Americans from being mistreated under Sharia law. Newt is just stirring up un-necessary Islamophobia.

I hope Newt isn't seriously planning a Pres run in '12. He is a flip flopper, he has inconsistant messages, and he has too much baggage.

Those aren't my words. I don't think the quote implies that Gingrich is himself religious, but that he appeals to the religious right.

Sharia law is interesting. It contains many examples that are similar to European based law. Sharia comes from the Koran, [[the word of God), from the teachings of Mohammed and from rulings of religious scholars [[fatwas). Sharia governs every aspect of life, in which it differs from Western law systems which govern civil and criminal matters.

It seems as though the religious right in the US would like to see Christian values deployed here to the extent Sharia is in the Muslim world. I guess people are the same, whatever they call their value sets, and want to incorporate them into the law of the land to govern daily life in a way that makes sense to them. The example of Sharia makes the separation of Church and State the most logical and sensible way to run the system of laws, and gives the perfect defense against incorporating Sharia into the system of laws.

The US has taken steps against spousal abuse, rape, ect.
While I will readily admit that the United States wasn't always the best when it comes to protecting women, Human Rights have come a long way, and going backward in order to be sensitive to a religion, or to be politically correct in the name of diversity would be a mistake.

The First and Fourteenth Amendments should render futile any attempts to foist Sharia on any US jurisdiction.

maxx, Your article is a characterization, not a fact. I haven't heard any republicans claim they want to repeal any part of the 14th Amendment all though there have been calls for an additional amendment which would clarify the "and subject to the jusisdiction thereof clause". Republicans would probably be satisfied though if courts would just enforce that clause the way it stands but settled law once again gets in the way of the Constitution. In either case, I don't think that you are referring to the parts of the 14th Amendment to which gazhekwe referred about not depriving persons of life, liberty, or property without the due process of law.

Exactly! Why on earth would Republicans, or anyone else, want to repeal something that would help keep Sharia at bay?
