Hi, just a friendly heads up that National Geographic show Drugs Inc will feature Detroit, MI this Monday night, December 31. This is an excellent show that investigates the illegal drug market, from users, suppliers, law enforcement, etc for specific cities such as NYC, LA, Puerto Rico. This Monday Detroit will be their focus.

I like drugs, but that show is sensationalized. It would be an interesting watch I suppose, but I would question the information provided.
On a related topic, I have noticed a lot of the pro-gun people who argue "guns don't kill people" support the Drug War because they feel "drugs kill people". That's not a consistent argument in my opinion.
About as consistent as those who support gun control also idolize people like Che Guevara. Funny thing is Che used guns to get the power he had.
I got to work for the company that Nat Geo hired to film this show. I have to say they really tried to tell the truth. They busted their asses trying to get the best possible access to the people and territory who run things but thats almost impossible. I agree with BB, it is very sensationalized. The drug war is worn out, everybody knows what needs to be known and nothings going to change until our politicians stand up and recognize that the drug war is a total and complete failure that has been going on for 35+ years. While the crew that filmed this Detroit episode were working their asses off they are still limited by who is willing to talk on camera even with a mask on and voice distortion.
Tooting my own horn, theres a quick shot of me at the start of the show sitting on a porch in Brush Park with the Ds skyline behind me. Im nationwide now LOL.
Ive got a lot to say on this subject here but Ill wait to see if anyone cares after the show airs.
Double check the day and time, I see it on Sunday, 12/30/12 at 9PM.
I will give them credit for trying, I can imagine it has to be hard getting information from anyone involved or connected to our drug trade here [[cough, cough...just about every politician here and in Washington, but that's for a different debate....). I know if I was involved in the drug trade in anyway, I would talk to nobody, face blurred and voice distorted or not. Personally, I have always questioned if those are real people, or just hired people to tell a scripted story while they blur their face [[how would we know really?)Quote:

so how many "legends" among detroit's criminal underworld of the past 30+ years are profiled in the feature?
The show doesnt have any old stories, its about whats going on in the trade currently. There are some good interviews on Youtube of lawyers, Fishman I believe who reped Mazaratti)sp)Rick and other enforcers and others from the YBI days. If I find it Ill post a link.Quote:

I just watched the trailer and it doesn't make sense to me that that the border patrol would be the biggest problem with the drug trade because it hasn't been my impression that Canada is responsible for most of the drugs coming to the US. Perhaps this impression is wrong: but then, why doesn't Canada do more to secure its borders?
Also I've thought that the US & Canada at least need to have European-Union-Like borders. It's rediculous the shit you have to go through to get across the river.

Any murder that is related to a drugs just strengthens the argument to end prohibition. Our current drugs laws do far greater damage to people and society than the actual drugs themselves. Ironically nobody seems to mind. I guess some people feel that if something doesn't work, they should keep trying it over and over again.
Yeah, the vague 'relation' definition needs to be addressed as well. Those numbers have been INFLATED for years and years and years, because more money for 'enforcement' was available for areas where so-called 'drug crimes' were rampant.
Anything done while in possession of any drug caused a link...a statistical data point...even when the 'drug' had nothing to do with the crime. Perhaps especially so. It is all part of their stupid game.
Legalize it all. Stay the heck out of my garden. No, I won't pay taxes on anything I grow myself. Ever.

Accuse me of being a hardened Detroiter, I don't really have any conspiracy theories but one: If you take away the narcotics trade in the inner cities, than you would actually have to create jobs in the inner cities. The revenue generated there, and include with that all the jobs that come from penal system, would be replaced by what? It's the least common denominator in both cases, the holes dug are so deep, but the fear-mongering wins out every time, and society pays as a whole.
I'm no conspiracy theorist either, but I have always wondered what would happen to the economy in this country is ALL narcotics were eradicated? I truly believe "they" don't want to stop the flow of drugs into this country or into major cities. Too much money lost on both sides. How many now legit businesses that generate jobs and tax revenue have been started or linked to "dirty" money generated by drug sales and organizations over the past 4-5 decades? That would be an interesting but probably near impossible investigation.
And technically speaking, anyone who supports our current drugs laws and drug prohibition supports the "evil drug cartels", since they accumulate all their wealth, power, and influence on these drugs being illegal.

I want to add that Detroit lost it's "war on drugs" long ago. It didn't help that during the 1980s when things were really out of control those running the city were stealing millions from funds set up to combat drug crimes. They were importing coke and guns into the city and getting rich doing it.
Then in 1988, Rick Wershe who worked for the DEA, Detroit police and a drug task force by the time he was 14 years old was convicted and sent to prison for life for a drug charge he got when he was 17 years old??!! Then we found out a few years later why he was sent away. It was because he knew a lot of dirt about the mayor and his crooked friends.Rick provided more info that got the chief of police and other top names thrown in prison for serious crimes including drug dealing but those lowlife adults just got a few years? For millions they stole from Detroit and all the hundreds of pounds of coke they escorted through security into Detroit's airport? The mayor's kin was the leader of one of the biggest drug gangs in Detroit in the 1980s.. but when Rick helped get Micheal Curry put away it further put a target on his [[Rick's) head and admits on his life were made from orders from "the top". You all are giving me hope. I posted anti drug war rants on for over 10 years and would usually only get one poster or maybe two who saw the truth in what damage the drug war has done to the world, worse than the drugs themselves.

As the saying goes, "When you criminalize things that aren't real crime, you still create real criminals". Dumb laws for dumb people. Our current system of prohibition doesn't work and will never work. Why nobody seems to care is a question I can't answer.
