Ethics Problems Continue in DPD

About 30 command-level staffers of the Detroit Police Department saw a bigger paycheck Friday after receiving onetime merit bonuses of up to $1,300, even as other city workers, including the mayor, face furloughs and additional pay cuts.
The bonuses, based on 2011-12 performance appraisals, were paid to nonunion police commanders, second deputy chiefs, inspectors and others. The move outraged the city's largest union, which is now negotiating reduced health care for its members as other city employees begin taking mandatory unpaid time off starting Monday.
The wage reductions have reached even the mayor's office. Mayor Dave Bing and at least one City Council member have agreed to give back 10% of their annual salaries to align themselves with about 1,250 nonunion workers facing pay cuts.
