Foods you once ate that were not good for you...

Let's start a list [[don't be shy - I too ate one of those pickles from that jar at the local neighborhood store!)

1. Briny Dill Pickles floating in that giant jar at the store. They'd pick one out for you [[unsanitary no kiddin'). The brine was murky dark, the pickles huge and salty [[high-blood pressure cookers!)
2. Red Pistachios Nuts? They used to be dyed bright, some horrid #332 red or something. You never see those any more.
3. Sassafras Tea! My parents made me drink that when sick. Isn't it a poison in large doses or maybe the root not the leaves [[someone please clarify)
4. White Castle Hamburgers... well they're are back to being good though not recommended - LOL!
5. Candy Cigarettes? Chalky looking candy sticks that looked like cigarettes! Stuck to your rear molars like cement!
6. ...............?

I just remembered one: sticking my finger in the unbaked cake dough mix when my mother was not looking before she put cake into oven.

Not good! Raw eggs!

I’d drink raw eggs all the time until a bad one turned me completely off. Same for milk. Remember the day I stopped drinking a liter of milk a day. Sculled down a mouthful of gross curdled milk in the middle of the night. Barely touched it since.

Didn't those "Orange Julius" drinks at the mall kiosk have raw egg in it? :p

And speaking of raw egg...

Sounds like Kibbee or some stuff my brother the butcher used to make when he lived and worked in Rogers City. Chopped beef with a ton of chopped onion, salt and pepper. They used to sell it by the pound at the IGA he worked in and ate it on crackers. No one EVER cooked it.

Still made to this day at Plath's Meats and IGA in Rogers City. Referred to as "chopped beef". Tastes great on a Ritz cracker :o

White flour and rice, sweetened cereals, fruit juice, bacon and all processed meat, canned soup, pickles, regular cheese, potato chips, ice cream, pizza, ribs, fried foods, pop etc. and basically anything that tastes good.
Gave them all up after a heart attack last year. I don't miss them as much as I thought and the science is very sketchy on saturated fats, carbs, salt, etc. but since I had zero other risk factors, the only thing I could change was diet.

Try some of the yogurt ice creams. Some are quite delicious!

Fruit juice can be diluted with soda water for a bit of sparkle!!

My brother was the butcher at that IGA [[I think the same name, but not sure) from 1968 until around 1976. He made a ton of chopped beef. I went Rogers every summer for 10 yrs. A lot of diving off that raft in the harbor.

Nothing better than steak tartare! One of my absolute favorites. Just had some lamb tartare the other day at Mabel Gray. It was out of this world. Probably not so good for you but every once in a while why not.....

Steak tartare is my favorite food on the planet. When I lived in Europe I ate it far more than I probably should have. The best places were in Northwest France and Czech Republic around Prague. It is much harder to find in the US. Any suggestions locally?

Edit: I did have a version at Marrow in West Village a couple months back. It has rekindled my love of raw beef.

Ok, maybe this is just a Detroit thing because of all of the Auto plants, but any hot food served in the liquor store. Nothing bad about it, but I used to be hooked on K&G on Conner they still have the full spread.

Add to the list all of the canned soups and TV dinners that are high in sodium... nothing like getting your daily salt intake from one can of soup.

And such artificial stuff such as Cool Whip... Velveeta, and CheezWhiz... that last one has me wondering... what do you have when you take the Cheez out of it? Just Whiz? :p

Jello should probably be on that list... corn syrup, food coloring, and no nutritional value.

Yes! YES. I went in there first time last year having working in the area and bang there were pork chops with onions swimming in gravy, ribs, corn-bread, fried chicken, mac and cheese this and that -- the works!

It was tripped out! Didn't look like the most sanitary set up, but I bet that food is good [[burp!) setting aside the grease, grit and salt!

And yes they're down the road from the FCA Jefferson plant so...

@Zacha341 sassafras tea was made from the bark of the tree as a spring tonic. It was alleged to be a carcinogen, but I remember sassafras being used in Hires root beer.

My dad would make "cannibal sandwiches" with raw minced beef, chopped raw onion, and a dusting of salt and pepper. He also like headcheese. My mother's family were Poles from the Chene and Palmer area,with them it was kiszka [[blood sausage) an czarnina [[duck's blood soup), blech!

I used to have ice cream or some sort of desert every day. I limit myself to a small piece of chocolate or piece of cinnamon toast now.

Also, not really food, but pop. Used to drink it all the time, now - maybe one or two a week if that. I've come to really like those flavored carbonated waters - like Bubbly - that have no sugar or anything in them. That, or unflavored mineral water with a drop of cherry or grapefruit bitters.

I’ve have tried a couple of Impossible [[non meat burgers) Whoppers because, guilty pleasure, l liked Whoppers back in the meat days.

The verdict? Couldn’t tell the difference. Same texture, same flavor, same color, same smell, same juiciness. Made me wonder if they slipped me a real burger. Pretty amazing.

My boss is a vegan and, when he tried one, it kinda grossed him out because of it's accurate simulation of meat. He liked the flavor but the texture was too on the mark for his liking.

A ringing endorsement I think :)

Yeah I aware of trade offs and that, to a different degree, they are still poison burgers, as I called them in the old days. But they score better, as you mention, on environmental sustainability. I don't plan on eating that many, just once in a while when I jones for the meaty nostalgia.

One of my big objections to meat was the range of antibiotics and other drugs that are pumped into beef and other animals. A thousand gallons of water is required for a pound of beef and a lot of carbon emissions come out the backsides. All that before the cruelty of the slaughter process.

Going off meat is not easy. 3/4 of the restaurant menu disappears and the remaining dishes are often boring. To my eyes these ersatz meats will greatly ease that step, should one decide to do it.

As I mentioned in the earlier post, I had a heart attack so started reading a lot of info about diet. The biggest problem is that there is very little actual clinical science on the subject. Most of the studies are observational. ie. they looked at 400 people who ate this over 2 years. They don't look at the hundreds of other factors which differentiate people within the group. I just wish the gov't, doctors, etc. spent a little more time discussing the importance of an overall healthy diet when I was younger. I didn't even know what a carb was or that it turned into sugar in the bloodstream. This of course leads to plaque build-up and heart attacks. You don't have to be a diet fanatic but the "all bacon all the time" ads on tv need to be balanced with some common sense.

Think of eating raw beef as 'extra rare'. It has more flavor than dried out well done meat. My grandmother would give me salted raw beef after school. She trusted her butcher. The Austrian mother of one of my schoolmates would sometimes bring him raw ground beef and egg sandwiches as a treat just before lunch. I don't think this is done so much anymore because of awareness of salmonella and other diseases from processing plants.

Related- Bacon, hot dogs and other lunch meats are being avoided by more people because of cancer statistics associated with them. My neighborhood Kroger's does have lunchmeat now that advertises no preservatives for the same price as regular embalmed lunchmeat.

Be careful when traveling. The term "Boston Cooler" means different foods around the country.

In eastern Pennsylvania it's half a cantalope w/ice cream.

I've avoided raw so well I've never acquired a taste for it. Never had any unless it was an accident at a restaurant where some thing was served to me rare - cured by my not eating any further.

'Embalmed' lunchmeat! I'll remember that! Hah!

Trying to avoid that too along with raw meats! I don't eat sushi either.

The raw ground beef is formally known as "Steak Tartare". It is a German [[and other nationality) delicacy that I ate as a kid [[GROSS!!!).

Here is a history of the delicacy... love the part about the Mongol horde putting it under their saddle while they were riding to "tenderize" it. Yum!! :p

Shocked to see anyone here knowing about Plath's Meats in Rogers City. I lived up there for the majority of my high school years in the Mid-90s. Plath's has the best smoked pork loin and bratwurst. I am sure those are not good for you in the least.

My brother, who lived on Michigan up toward the hill, lived there for about 10 yrs and worked at the IGA, which I think used to be on Erie St east of 3rd. I can't remember who owned it back then, though. I spent a lot of my teen summers up there. Fun times

I lived at the top of the hill at the SE corner of 6th and Ontario. The IGA was in the plaza at 3rd and Erie but was on the east side of the plaza at 2nd. It was Mr. Ed's or Mr. Bill's IGA, I cannot remember which I just remember laughing at the name. It is now a Save-a-lot.

Oh, you were supposed to spit the wax out?

The wax was flavored, like gum. You chewed it and then spit it out, like gum.
The things with the sweet syrup inside were "Pop Bottles". You bit the top off, sucked out the 1/4 ounce of syrup and some chewed the wax and some tossed it out. Sometimes they came in tiny pop bottle carriers and had 4 colors/flavors: yellow, green, orange and red. I'm assuming lemon, lime, orange and cherry. They were called Nik-L-Nips

^^^ Oh yes, now I get it. Remember Now-a-Laters wrapped candies? Still available but smaller. I loved the artificial bright yellow banana flavored.

Known now as 'Anni-hi-lators' as they'll pull any filling out of your teeth!

pork rinds, chicarrones, big down here in South FL with the Latinos. Local store has 3 different brands. But if not marked "hot", bring your own hot sauce.

I've had 'Hog Head Cheese' as it was called in my neighborhood.

Maybe in early 80's... Never again. Just congealed junk.

I've NEVER had chitterlins [[sp?), never will.

But had my parents made them I would have. But they did not. THANKFULLY!

I always wondered how can you tell when chitterlings are clean.

I tried them once. They taste worse than they smell. Never again.

swizzle sticks. lemon heads. Mike & Ike. Now & Laters.

I can't eat sliders like I once did. I once could eat six in a row, but no more.

I look up the calorie count of various things at restaurants nowadays and I'm blown away. Just for the coffee-beverage industry alone: wow.
When I was a kid I liked "blizzards" from Dairy Queen. I look at the calorie counts now, and it's just so depressing. I haven't had one in I don't know how many years.

Like trying to remove quills from a porcupine I would imagine. No way to verify 100%... only hope for clean-er I suppose. No thank you.

Rather than spending hours cleaning hog fecal guts, I prefer slicing and cutting fruit for my juicer.

That's a pain too [[especially the clean up)!! But far healthier results!
