Walkable Urban Spaces--Detroit Leads Nation in Expansion Since 2010

Looks like all that Dequindre Cut, Riverfront and other walkways stuff is finally adding up. Via Aaron Mondry of Curbed Detroit.

"Walkability produces a lot of desirable outcomes for residents: more jobs, better health, greater access to amenities and services. While Detroit is well behind other American cities in the number of walkable districts, according to a new report, it’s also the fastest growing.

"A joint project between The Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis at George Washington University and a number of other organizations, “Foot Traffic Ahead” seeks to determine the impact of walkable urban places [[or WalkUPs), which cities have the most, and which have the potential to make more. It defines WalkUPs as places above a certain square footage of office or retail space and a high Walk Score.

This sound good but some if these projects had not very long delays in their extensive eventhough it's been reported that the funding is there for the extensions. Faye Nelson who headed the Riverfront conservancy was diligent in moving the development at a timely pace then open the newly extended part once completed. This group who control things currently had slowed the project to a snail's pace and had delayed the northward extension of the Cut for a few years to this date.

The northward expansion stopped at the uniroyal site. It stopped while they tried to figure out who was going to pay for Enviromental remmediation of the site.

Nothing happened there for years while they fought over the cleanup costs.

I think stasu is talking about the Dequindre Cut proceeding north of Mack Avenue. The extension of the Riverwalk has stopped EASTward at the Uniroyal site [[as well as westward at Rosa Parks Blvd).
