Hamtown Farms
Hey there Yesser's
I've hinted at it in a few posts in the past few weeks, and it looks like it's going to happen!
A group of folks, including myself, are starting a community garden and orchard-Hamtown Farms. We have the full support of the city and have been blessed to work with a number of groups that have been very helpful including the Green Garage, People's Community Services and more.
Anyway, I have a quick question about property taxes. Does anyone on this forum own vacant property? If so what are your property taxes?
We'll be sure to keep updating this thread as we grow. Be sure to save June 9th for our community activation day. Feel free to drop us a line at hamtownfarms@gmail.com-we'd love to share our plan with you and hear your thoughts.

Property taxes on unimproved property is much lower than it is on improved property. This is mainly due to the value of the improvements. In most cases it is taxed at the same milage but that amount can vary.
One pitfall would be that property other than your primary residence may have extra mills tacked onto it Again this varies by jurisdiction/school district/other taxing body.

I am excited for you Hamtown Mike. I can't wait for warm weather so I can ride my bike over there.

I own a couple parcels in the City of Detroit. They're assessed between $200 and $700, taxed between $15 and $60 annually. I owned one in Highland Park that was assessed at $6k and they wanted $600 annually. I guess they'll be getting it back soon!
