Ford will allow 30K workers to continue to work from home post-pandemic

"Ford Motor Company told tens of thousands of employees on Wednesday that they will be permitted to work from home even when the coronavirus pandemic is over, allowing around 30,000 to use the office only when needed.

Bloomberg News reported that the company unveiled a “flexible hybrid work model” that will allow Ford employees to work from home for “heads-down work,” and come into the office for meetings and team-building activities.

The system is expected to go into effect in July and will mainly apply to salaried employees and not factory workers."

I wonder what impact this will have on Dearborn. Also, if this will lessen the impact of their Corktown campus if half the workers are at home. That means less customers for the surrounding businesses.

Taking it a step further, it'll be interesting to see the impact this has on Metro Detroit and Michigan as a whole, especially if GM and *Stellantis* go the same route. Remember that the successor to Alan Mullaly was notoriously known for super commuting to/from Florida to do his job.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people who either will now claim their 2nd homes as their primary residence or move out of state if they don't have a 2nd residence. I have no doubt there are many employees who only stayed in Michigan because they had to be tethered to their desk in Dearborn.

That said, this was inevitable because the Big 3 are just plain struggling to compete with Silicon Valley and even industries such as Oil/Gas to attract the top talent they desire, mostly because of their location. This move by Ford suddenly makes the company a lot more attractive to folks who didn't want to live in Michigan.

This means literally nothing, it's just allowing some people to continue some form of work from home while the pandemic slowly goes away.

Any work from home arrangement would still require periodic check ins at the office.
