Need names of down river pizza restaurants
Besides the big chains, there's Roma on Eureka w. of Fort St, in Southgate, Pia's on Ecorse RD in Taylor, Vito's on Fort ST IN Lincoln Park, ALSO IN l.p. ON Fort ST, Clemente's, Leonardo's in Romulus on Merriman, just N of Metro Airport, Frank's on Biddle in Wyandotte, also in Wyandotte, JJ'S ON Ford [[Northline), Del's on Jefferson in Trenton, there's one in Allen Park on the west side of Allen RD Italian SOUNDING NAME, CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME, If UR looking for inside dining, Roma's, Frank's, Vito's, Leonardo's,Clemente's,and Pia's have it, so does the place on Allen in A.P.
I know this isn't downriver, but the pizza/Italian place inside the Fisher building was very delicious. Pricey, but the mood and the pizza were just right.
I was just at Pia's in Taylor a few weeks ago. First rate pizza with a terrific, chewy crust. Service is always very friendly.
YUMM! Franks Pizza in Wyandotte. I have been eating pizza there since I can remember. I know how bad this will sound but, normally, I don't really care for pepperoni but at Franks they use the little pepperoni and cook the pizza until they curl up and become little crunchy cups of grease. Damn it's good!
Our go-to pizza joint in the near downriver area is BC's down on Fort Street between Outer Drive and Southfield on the west side of the street. They rule.
Whats the place that uses sauerkraut as a topping?
Pia's is on Ecorse Road, west of Pelham.

Baldo's on Telegraph in Brownstown.
Back in the 70's before it became a big chain, Hungry Howie's had a good crust , cheesy [[as in lots of cheese) pizza. Hungry Howie's has pizza buffet restaurants in Florida, some of them serve draft beer. A good pizza buffet downriver is Stevie B's on Allen and West Rd. A lot better than American Pie on Pardee in Taylor.
Another pizza that USED to be good was Buscemi's. They used to have a store on Northline w. of Fort Street in Southgate. It was the best take out pizza that you could buy, eat. A year or so ago, we got a Buscemi's pizza on Venoy in Westland and it seemed as though they cheapened the recipe.
Clemente's is very good. They were the first liquor license in Lincoln Park when they were on Fort Park. We stopped in on the wee hours of January 1st and had a riot.
They had a buffet of food for their customers and had karaoke. Even Paul Clemente was out there singing. And his son who is about 12 years old was terrific at it!!!
Pizza Connection on Southfield, east of Fort, across the street from Calder's Dairy in Lincoln Park is a place I frequented when I lived there. However, I'm partial to Clemente's.
Sylvia's Super Sub Shop on Allen rd. across from Thunderbowl. You will have to take a paper towel to soak up the grease in the little pepperoni bowls.
Franks in Wyandotte is still the best though, Pias not bad either.
That Sylvia's looks like a good place to try. Every once in a while I like a nice greasy square of pizza. There was a little place on Pardee in Taylor, Arjay's, where you'd get two delicious slices and a coke for $1.75. They closed, unfortunately.
Vito's on Fort Street in Lincoln Park had it too. You'd order a large and there'd be a little pool of grease in the middle. But so good. I understand they've reopened, but I haven't been to the new one.
Add one more vote for BC's in Lincoln Park. 20 years later, and the pie is still awesome! They nailed the 2 most important parts. Yummy sauce and lots of cheese.
Franks in Wyandotte for sure!! One place where the food is worth the service...
Frank's in Wyandotte - pizza great - but NOTHING beats the gnocchi!
Mancino's in Taylor at Northline and Pardee is a sit down joint that has pizza. I never had their pizza, always get the grinders. Anyone have their pizza?
For years, Clemetes's used to sell much better pies from the bar, rather than the restaurant. Not sure when it changed, however I've heard it is different.

When I was young, the BEST was a place in LP named Collorazzi's [[sp?), which was located on the very north end of the LP Plaza and about where the ACO is today.

Mickey's a few blocks away is quite good and they've been in business many years.

Many pie parlors make superb pizza until they start selling franchise's and then the quality diminishes. Two good examples are in Southfield. Buscemi's and Papa Romano's.
Clemente's is fantastic. Great pizza, great people.
Ok, now I'm craving some.
I liked BC's--the pizza had some weight to it and good toppings. Also go for the cheese bread if you're there. Drive thru window is a plus in crappy weather.
A memory test. Do you remember what the ACO building was before National's ? Rudy and Ralph Colarossi owned that place. A couple of school buddies used to drive the delivery Jeeps for them. They were the same sliding door models that the post office used to use. A lady and her husband took over the building and used it for a resturant for a while.
I know there's been a thread on this already, but I do have to put in my vote for Peppina's in LP. Been gone for many years now. For a current place, I recommend BBoomer's Bar at Roosevelt and Southfield in AP. Been eating that for some time now.
Hey Fred, what's happening? Hope all is well with you.
I second Boomers. Say hi to Kenny for me next time you are there. Let me know a good time and I can try to hook up with you for a pie there one day.
Did you read about Hatmaker in yesterday's paper? It was pretty interesting.
I just read on Facebook 'You'll Know your from Lincoln Park if . . .' page that Clemente's is closing in June or July.
I wouldn't say that Clemente's has been going downhill in terms of their food. Sure, the place needs renovations but the food is still very good. We were in there New Year's Eve and the place was packed. Talking to Paul Clemente, then, it appeared that he is just worn out after so many years of running it with his Dad, Joe, and Aunt Rose. And since Chiarelli's Market, around the block from them closed last year, which had been in Lincoln Park since 1925 its been a bit depressing for the Clemente family.
Definitely support Clemente's while they are still here. And pay visits to Pia's and Sportman's. I have only had Sportsman's once but it was very good.
You guys are making me hungry...was there a large Italian immigrant enclave downriver at some point? My mother in law gave me and my wife an uncooked pizza from Italian bakery in Dearborn on Schaefer...we added pepperoni, olives and mushrooms MAN WAS THAT PIZZA DELICIOUS! didnt' take long to cook......
There's some very early photo's of Chiarelli's Market on the Lincoln Park Historical website
see photo's #61, 64 and 69 in the sequence
even a shot of Clement's
Thanks. Those photos are ones that we [[Lincoln Park Preservation Alliance) scanned for the Arcadia Publishing Lincoln Park book. Paul Clemente loaned us his family photos and Al Chiarelli loaned us their family photos. Plus, the museum had an old photo or two of Chiarelli's on file. The website was done with a grant from AT&T. Sue Ingesoulian, owner of Chesley's, volunteered her time to do the website and updates it. She has two degrees in IT and teaches IT at various colleges.
I have only lived Downriver for nearly 13 years now so I'm not much of an authority on it but I can tell you that Wyandotte had an Italian and a Polish section. And Lincoln Park's Italian's came from Roca Pia, Italy. The Clemente's, Chiarelli's and a few other of the family's came from Roca Pia. The Oakwood section of Detroit, I think, was predominantly Italian.
Thanks laylynch...I think Roman Village is near Oakwood....havent had the pies there but have great entrees..rich tomato sauce..hearty mixed green salads with fresh bread..mmmmm
Just heard that Clemente's official closing date is June 15, 2010.
^^
I believe it's just Friday. I think they have burgers and other bar food the rest of the week.
PlymouthRes, thanks for the welcome. Since moving back after 20+ years I have settled in Canton, but still consider myself a "downriver rat". have you heard about the MHS all class gathering at Boomers on May 22nd? I'll be there!
Clemente's last day is Sunday. However, I heard today that they will be open Monday and Tuesday but for beverages only. It's been busy there since it was announced that they were closing in June. Often lines waiting for tables. Channel 7 had a story on it last night and the News Herald had an article on it today.

yea, I understand why Joe and Rose are ready to retire. And the place needed so many improvements. But its sad that we are losing a cool bowling alley. And I never bowled there. Always planning on doing a bowling event there but never did. Clemente's was always a popular place Monday nights after the council meetings.
Someone recently said its a new era since we lost Chiarelli's Market, in Lincoln Park since 1925, in 2009. And 2010 it was the Mellus, built 1941, and now Clemente's which has been in Lincoln Park since 1933. It was originally on Fort Park in the building where Chiarelli's Market used to be. It is now apartments that Joe Clemente owns. Paul Clemente is running for State Rep because his cousin Ed Clemente is term limited.
This is a link to the channel 7 story/video about clemente's

Thanks. Meant to post it. Copied and pasted by mistake the wrong link in my post.
Good Detroit News article today: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100...-end-of-an-era
Glad to hear that Clemente's is keeping their liquor license, the oldest in Lincoln Park, that dates back to 1933. That means there is hope for a new Clemente's!
The structure of the Lincoln Park Historical site has changed.
The new URL for the Clemente's page
Best Pizza?
Pizza King on Harrison Avenue [[just before Goddard) on Fort Street. Hard to find? Yes Worth it? Indeed!
