It's been forever since I have dropped by. I am curious how many old timers are still around. Let's say those that have been on here 10+ years or so. So, let the rollcall begin
I've been here since before 2009 when it switch from the old format. Pretty sure it was 2007:o
Not on a lot, but I still check in. Been here also since before 2009 when the switch occurred.
My profile shows 3/09 but then I think that was the format change. I think I've been here from at least '08.
Actually March 05 was original sign up date
April of 2009. Long enough to wish some other people were still with us.
I'm still here. There are a remarkable number of members with 2009 dates still around, some coming and going like our friend Supersport, and participating. In 2009 we had to switch to vBulletin software, couldn't transfer the member list and everyone had to sign up again, hence no dates before then. Almost all of the early-2009-dated members were members prior to that date.
The first forum was in 1999 but the software was dreadful and in 2000 we switched to Discus but those developers stopped updating their systems requiring the 2009 switchover to the more robust vBulletin system.
I'm moving this over to the main Discuss Detroit forum for a while for more visibility. Welcome back Supersport.
Been here since 2009
2008 for me, so not an OG. But I remember Forum socials! I believe my first post was about building a monument like Lady Liberty in Detroit. Boy, was I bright eyed and bushy tailed back then. Now I'm just as cynical as the next Detroiter. :D
I've been here since February of 2010, but I changed usernames after I moved in 2013.
I think I joined in 2006 or 2007 before the platform change, but been here since. I've not been posting as much in the past, but still reading. I do miss many of the history type posts that used to be here. I guess we've covered it all.
I've been reading since 2007, joined in 2012, regretted it 2013.
I've been around since at least 2000.
Member since about 2007, still read posts almost every day.
I'm pretty sure I had as many or more posts on the old forum as I do post 2009. In other words, I've been here a while and I'm easily distracted from my work while online.
Word. Since 2000 yo.
It says I've been here since '09, but it seems longer than that. This Detroit to Las Vegas transplant reads here daily.
I've been a member since '05 with a screen name change during the '09 switchover.
Profile says 2009 but lurking for longer than that date
Still here. Since '99 thanks to Aram, a high schooler who handed me a card with his People Mover website card. We were both staring into the Hudson's hole when we struck up a convo. He made the site and card for class and his page had links to here. Nineteen years is a long time for a website, isn't it?
Registered: 08-2006
lurking since 2004 probably
Been here since March 2009 and battled Bear in the Box right off the bat
2006, maybe 2005.
I've been here since April 2005
Been here since about 2004.
I've been posting on & off since 2000 or so, and originally found this forum thru Northern Soul. I remember at one point during the early days of the Kazooexplorer & ItsJeff era, I asked if I was on some type of gay forum...not that there would be anything wrong with that. Crazy thing was, they were the same person. Lol....thru me for a loop. Always read the forum but my posting comes and goes thru the years.
I have here since It’sJeff passed but a lurker since The Fabulous Ruins.
There are many I miss deeply.
Gannon and Django. Ravine and DetroitPlanner. I miss having knock-downs with Rasputin and BlackSoul_X. I miss Jjabba taking the Dexter bus and laughing at CCBaston spanking it over smoker porn.
But it was the WDET story about the funeral for ItsJeff that compelled me to go from lurker to member.
In real life I’m still in contact with BlueEyedOne, Cub, UrbanOutdoors, PlymouthRes, Roq, LodgeDodger, and a handcart full of others.
But Django
I was an active poster from about 2004 until 2011. Then I turned to just lurking while I lived in other places...so much so that I forget my user information! Since I returned to Detroit 7 months ago I decided to start posting again.
I used to love the perspective and respect that was always present in debates on this board. Sadly, lately it has turned into a politically charged shit show. But I still check back a couple times a day to check out the hot threads.
Been here since 2000... still under the same ID. Some of you other old timers must have switched names... don't recognize some of your names from back then... I too miss Jjaba...
I have been around forever here. I am pretty sure since '98 or '99 back when we didn't have to log in and could put whatever name we wanted to on each post.
I guess I'm an OG. I was probably closer to diapers when I joined than I was to my current age. I think I joined sometime after 9/11 but before Obama became president.
2005 I believe
I discovered the Fabulous Ruins of Detroit website in 1998. I have been on the forum since 1999 or so. Mr. Gnome mentioned some great people who have passed, I also want to mention the sweet, older lady that lived in Islandview Village, maybe her name was "sumas".
Please come back: Jt1,Livernoisyard, Hermod, Rasputin, BlackSoul_X, Royce, Hamtragedy, Jjaba, Al_T_Publican, and Mackinaw!
I see a few past posters on other internet forums: Retroit, Khorasauras, Shai_Hulud, DTWFlyer.
If you remember where you were the day the Great Livonian War began you are definitely DYES old guard.

Sunday, March 05, 2006, a day that shall live in infamy!
Gistok and Detroit Stylin have been around pretty much since day 1.
When I met MasterBlaster it was during the Great Softball Revolt down as Riverside Park. A great man and even better outfielder.
The game was over, we won, Matty Moroun lost and MasterBlaster was late for work. I was going to offer him a ride when I turned around he was sprinting towards Fort St.
For a little guy, he is really fast.
Later on I was with Homer and his wife, Marge, when we closed the Ambassador Bridge and then later when a scraggly gaggle of rebellious souls ripped down Matty’s Fences around Riverside Park.
I miss Kathleen, the Grillmaster and our summertime picnics. I miss seeing Gistok and cringing at his dirty jokes, but a really miss yelling at Gannon.
Unfortunately, almost every one of his unbelievable conspiracy theories are now believable.
Lurker since 2005, registered in 2010.
The oldest post of mine I could find was dated January 8, 2006 in DetroitYES HOME » DetroitYES Archives Index. It was about hacking old phones. LOL
I remember finding the site much earlier with some search engine. The pages were all black back then in protest about net neutrality or some such.
There's also the WayBack Machine if you want to get really nostalgic.
Still here, not quite an OG, reading up on everyone else's posts most days. I just don't post much, especially if I don't really have anything remotely constructive or clever to contribute. There are only so many flags we have time to plant, or energy to put into deflecting shitty trolls.
And I have no willingness to get into Trump pissing contests.
I do miss you Gannon, and DetroitPlanner. And DetroitNerd was always a hoot, wish he'd come back. With his Frank Rizzo routine...
I was there for the software changeover I think. Will have to post and edit the date of join in a minute.
I checked the archives, 10-2007 for me.
Wow what a blast from the past! So many trips down memory lane for sho'!
Member since 2009!
If you remember this banner that the forums used back in the mid 2000's, you are again definitely DYes old guard. Thankfully the Wayback Machine has saved this.

I have no idea when I first signed up, but I suspect it was well over 10 years ago. I know there's a way to check, but I don't know how to and I don't care.
Many thanks to Lowell for all his hard work over the years to keep this thing up and running. I get a sense of a real, caring community here, which is hard to maintain on the Web.
One of my specific memories is the day Slumpy finally fell to utter ruin and destruction, and all the pictures that were going around at the time. Any of you fellow OG's remember when that was?
Hey SuperSport. Weren’t you into Camaros?
I joined prob 03-04ish? I found this site while searching for stuff about the abandoned buildings in Detroit. The classic ruins tour!
Moved over as well and still read the forum multiple times a day.
I followed a forum thread discussing what might happen when Y2K rolls around.
There are likely forum members who were not yet born when The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit was created.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.... :D
Gnome... I miss your Apple Pie!! Blueyedone... I miss your Sand Pail Pudding!! Kathleen... I miss everything off the grill!! :p
I remember razzing Jjaba about the Westside/Eastside rivalry... and how the west siders [[used to their grid plan street system) would come to the east side and see everything is not right angles and grid layout... and go screaming back to the west side! :o
One of the best threads ever is of more recent vintage... the "Midtown Vortex" thread. I still get a chuckle out of that one! ;)
My profile says 2009 but I was here before that.
Since 2000.
I remember posting under my real name before the old system went poof. Since then I've posted items on the rare occasions when I actually know enough about the city to add something. Or when I can't control my urge to make a smart remark.
Long-time lurker, occasional poster. I'm pretty sure I've been around since the early 2000s.To me the interwebs wouldn't be the same without DetroitYes. Kudos to Lowell for birthing and fostering this gem.
Oh I remember that - I thought of it with all the stuff last week on Twitter about a new "Civil War". The Livonian War was much better.
I think I joined in 2005 or 06 but lurked before that.
I miss Gannon but there are others I don't miss... [[Karl anyone???)
Holla!!
2003/2004 there was an DetYes addict in the office who turned me on. Thanks Lowell for a cool head and cool DetYes structure.
Says 2009, but I was here before that. Around 03-04 when I started posting here.
I think I've been here since about the time of the '09 changeover, which is not all that long after I returned to Detroit, but I lurked on the historical threads for years before that.
Before the 2009 change, but not sure when.
Posted often, for several years, check the site maybe every month or so now.
I'm cheap and old, stopped Detroit visits when it was no longer easy to park free on Beaubien and walk to four or five live music venues!
Still hit Belle Isle and DIA often, but do not usually have much to contribute here, anymore.
Hoping to see something from tponetom, though.
Thank you, Lowell, for this site.
Looks like I was here at the March 2009 reset, too.
I started 4/22/09. I was wiz 40 when i started, now am pontiac 6000 in tribute to my favorite old car.
Started here in the pre-9/11 days. Became a regular and eventually drifted away. I do lurk from time to time, but not that often. I recall the days of Karl and Rasputin, especially when he said "I didn't lose shit" in one of the more memorable threads. Hard to keep up with the news because I am no longer in the area and haven't been for nearly a decade.
I think i've been around since 2004 or 2005. I mostly lurk around from time to time.

That makes me the winner, as I was on here when they still used vacuum tubes and punch cards.

August 2006. I was a lurker who started out with the Fabulous Ruins of Detroit Tour. That led to viewing the forum until I saw a photo of a contemporary downtown building. Remembering seeing a much older picture of the same downtown scene, I posted the two side by side - my first post. My favorite poster was JJabba [[from the West Side).
Been a long time since I've posted. Recently came back to the site after a few years away. Met some good people. Miss some good people. Nice to be back in lurking mode. :)
I miss Ravine who joined 1-2006; RIP dude
I so miss Sumas, and those spats with Ghettopalmetto! Fun threads that English used to start.
A quick search on atdetroit.net reveals my original join date as August 2006! The website was already 9 years old and the leading resource for Detroit news and development. Back then almost no one could’ve forseen the city’s progress today. MCS, Packard, Wurlitzer and Metropolitan Buildings were long considered goners that would surely be demolished, Kwame and the Super Bowl were in full swing, the Bankruptcy was a looming but distant possibility, and the Riverwalk plan was just in its early stages. Most people figured downtown would always be a desolate wasteland that had little hope of overcoming massive disinvestment and abandonment. If someone would’ve told me back then that by 2020 100+ buildings downtown would be restored with plans for MCS and Packard in the works, neighborhood investment increasing, and a street car line down Woodward, I would’ve laughed them out of the room!
I was on the old forum so must be around 10 years.
Before the forum switch. Probably sometime in 2007.
Since winter 2004-2005 when I was at WSU, the Super Bowl planning was all the rage, and we didn't know Dan Gilbert would ever be a developer here.
Not posting more than once a month here, but still a frequent stop to get the real scoop on a story/development. Thanks Lowell.
I've been here since 2000, I believe. First came here following a thread about the Leland House Hotel, where I went through military entrance processing back in 1987.
I've been here a good many years -- under this name for a bunch, and under another name [[I forget which) before that. I think it had to do with forgetting my password. Seems to be a theme.
Probably too long. I would guess 5 years before the switch. I remember the first thread I read was about Christmastime at Hudson's. I read it and the memories made me cry.
For what it's worth, I've been on the SDF for nearly as long....say two weeks after I found this place.
I've been on since around 2002. Still friends with many people that I met through this forum back in the day.
I've been a member since around 2002 give or take a year. My previous handle was "the one". It's been amazing to watch our city go through the good times and the bad.
I'm another one who had another name before the switch. Was away for awhile returned and found things had changed.
My profile says 2009, but I’m sure I was here before the format change. I found D-Yes after reading an article about ItsJeff in the Freep. I rarely post , but check in everyday or two.
Since around 2005
If you want to search your start date type:
atdetroit.net:yourusername
subbing your handle for yourusername
It will bring up an old-style page that you posted on with your join date on one of the posts but it may only go back to 2003
Cool option JC. Thanks.
I believe I have been here since around the 2001-2003 timeframe. So many good memories. FSC, ItsJeff, so many more. Not the same site today as it was then but still one of the better Detroit-centric sites on the internet. Thanks to Lowell for prevailing.
Since way before 2009. Enjoy the Forum very much. Great asset for Detroit.
March of 2009 here
This 2005 thread is still viewable on the old forum archives, but this Wayback Machine archive is really more nostalgic to you old guards, as it comes complete with the 2005 look.

Here since 2007!
I didn't realise I've been here since at least November of 2003, but I guess that's correct.
I've been here since at least 98-99? It was one of the first sites that I stuck to after I set up my first ever pc when I was still stationed in Virginia.
Found my same name on the old forum which said 2003 join date. How time flies!
I can’t even remember but way before the switch when my user name was just “Bryan.” I am guessing high school, so late 1990s.
June 2004 for me. Seems like a lifetime ago.
Wow we have some true veterans still around! Is there still an annual picnic? I have never been but thought about it through the years. I think my profile has been around since 2010 or so when I moved into Corktown, but I'd been a lurker for 2 years or so prior to that when I made my decision to move back to the city.
I was here daily for a few years, especially during the bankruptcy, but that took a back seat to other obligations and interests after some time. I still come on when I can when I need [[or can give) some inside scoop. Glad to hear the community is still very active.
I’ve been here since January 2004.. I was young, very young but I had such a fascination for Detroit. I loved reading the forum and learning from many in the professions I was interested in even at 13.. I am not a 27 year old city planner having worked in New York, Atlanta, Tokyo, and on some shorter term projects around the US. I owe my love and early success in this profession to DetroitYes. Thanks Lowell, for letting me in with a new yahoo email address [[that I still use for junk email), even though I was lying about my age and you knew it hahah. I had been looking at The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit Page well before that, probably around 2000 at 9 years old was my first encounter.
April 7, 2009.
