Detroit References in Movies and Television

Sorry if there's already a thread on this...but if there isn't, then I'll begin with this one:

In one episode of Adam-12 titled "Log 74-Light Duty" [[originally aired 3/21/1970), the officers are visited by a man and a woman, both originally from Detroit, but later moved to the show's setting, Los Angeles. About 18 minutes in, the man says that he went back during a vacation the year before-he said that it was a mistake and that everything had changed-he says that his street didn't even exist any more [["Sycamore on the west side"-but as of 2014, there is still a Sycamore Street in the city-which, coincidentally, is on the west side-specifically, branching off Grand River one block south of MLK and near the Motor City Casino). The woman then said she knew it well from the big trees that lined it and he replied that these trees were also gone.

In the movie Bird on a Wire, we had mountains in the background and could hop on a ferry to Racine Wisconsin. Tough to live up to what Hollywood had for us.

*Cheers: In an episode from 1988 titled "Jumping Jerks" [[Season 7, Episode 8), Sam told the guys a story about one of his last games he played at Tiger Stadium.

*Bewitched: In an episode from 1967 titled "Super Car" [[Season 3, episode 18), Endora gives Darrin a prototype car being engineered in Detroit as a gift. One of his clients see the car and want to use it in a commercial for his Sausage company. However, since Endora stole the car, the authorities were after them for Grand Theft.

Full House: Dave Coulier's [[who is from Detroit) character, Joey Gladstone, would often be spotted with a Detroit Red Wings jersey on.

Good Times: Florida Evan's brother, Uncle Wilbert [[played by Louis Gossett, Jr.), is from Detroit. He guest starred in a couple episodes. He would come to look in on the family while James Evan's was away.

The Lucy Show: In an episode from 1970 titled "Lucy The Crusader" [[Season 3, Episode 5), when Lucille Ball's character returns a broken record player to the store she purchases and demands to speak with the owner, the clerk assisting her [[played by Charles Nelson Reilly) explains to her that he fly out to Detroit for the guarantee on his car as one of his wheels fell off.

I've found romance many a night in Detroit.

The last new episode of Person of Interest, "Control-Alt-Delete" aired Jan. 13 2015.

The computer system that monitors everyone and everything finds a cell of "terrorists" operating out of a house in Woodbridge [[that looks more like Highland Park by way of Flatbush Brooklyn) They are, of course, of Arabic descent, originally from Dearborn and attending U of M Dearborn [[so they live in Woodbridge?). Their plot is to blow up landmarks around Detroit, including the Spirit of Detroit and the Livingstone Lighthouse[[??) Turns out they were framed for the whole thing, all get killed but one of them makes a break for Canada on a train[[???) I don't think a single scene was shot in Detroit, but most of the episode took place here.

It seemed *oddly* specific to Detroit - the gruff police detective even made a snide comment about the Wings. I wondered if they custom-shot certain scenes in the episode for each market - seems like something that show would experiment with.

The only episode worth watching from one of the worst tv shows ever produced! The Seinfeld episode when Kramer tries to drive all the returnable bottles to Michigan.

Beat me to this one, but I was going to make it about humorous references to Detroit.
Alright:

Sanford & Sons "Party Crasher": when Lamont & Rollo invite some gals from Detroit over to party and the girls see the pitiful lay-out [["You gots to be jivin' me."), one of them says "Honey, if this is California livin', I can't wait to get back to Detroit."

The Munster's "The Fregosi Emerald": Herman comes across a cursed emerald ring he can't remove, and Grandpa tracks it down to the last surviving relative, Detroit auto manufacturer, Henry J. Fregosi. Soooo, they head off to Detroit and get the "reputable" auto manufacturer to admit he dabbles in the black arts [[puts hexes on the cars so they get "bad mileage" and jams their radios with his ads-all falls under the heading of "creative management". Grandpa: "Ever put a curse on the whole automobile?" Fregosi: "Only once. I assume you've heard of the Edsel?").

Can you think of another whimsical family series that had the family go to Detroit to visit someone who was head of an auto manufacturing company? I was going to mention it, but to even mention the gag that occurs once they hit Detroit city limits falls too close on the heels of a recent tragedy.

The Saturday Night Live with Charles Grodin [[he was on last night in a Chevy/Goldi Neil Simon flick): Dan Ackroyd does his classic Irwin Mainway character who defends his unsafe Halloween costumes for kids. When they get to Johnny Combat Action Costume, he mentions that it is "very popular in Texas and Detroit".

Scary Movie: with the "Before & After" the alien attack on Detroit gives me the chortles.

Of course there is Detroit 9000, Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, Beverly Hills Robocop 4: Enter the Death Race 9000 [[still in the works)----then there's that horrible film that only goth d*uchebags liked which we will not name but rhymes with the equally d*uchebaggy word "Bro".

Oh, by the way, Dearborn does get mentioned twice on the previously hinted unnamed popular family series. "Do you guys know where we can find some awesome kids to show it to?" Milhouse: "Dearborn, Michigan?"
Paul Feig, who created & wrote "Freaks & Geeks" was from Royal Oak, has it set in the fictitious Detroit suburb of Chippewa, and references to Detroit are constantly made [[Alice Cooper, Diet Faygo Ginger Ale, etc.). In fact, I respect any one from Detroit who smuggles it in somewhere [[keep in mind "Beverly Hills Cop" was produced by Jerry "C.S.I." Bruckheimer from Detroit-had Murphy wear that Mumford High T-shirt).
Another riddle: what retro-nostalgic film from the '90s had "freaks" going to Detroit to see a concert? Too obvious?

The movie Casino has some references to Detroit, in one scene with Joe Pesci narrating, he refers to one of the members of their operation as "this old antique from Detroit".. It's pretty funny... I think "ACE" has his car blown up at a Detroit restaurant in the movie...Anyone know the back-story on that incident? It actually happened.

Detroit is mentioned in the film Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.
It's near the film's conclusion: cute banter between the main characters.

Detroit is mentioned in two old "film noirs" I've seen recently. One is the 1950 The Damned Don't Cry with Joan Crawford, David Brian and Steve Cochran. Brian and Cochran are gangland crooks and Cochran calls a meeting of crooks from around the country to plan a revolt against Brian. Crawford overhears a phone conversation placed "to Detroit" during the planning of the revolt. The other movie is the 1952 The Turning Point [[William Holden, Alexis Smith). This one is also about gangland crime and a killer is summoned "from Detroit" to murder the Holden character towards the end. Sorry that both movies are about crime!

oo! oo! Cheyenne Cinnamon-starts in Detroit [[got an ED-209 with a morning star coming out of it's arm) and gets abysmal from there... Which also puts the corrective on the the Non-Detroit thread asking who would make the perfect icon depicting our sick America. Besides Cheyenne is more authentic than the originally proposed candidate.

While geographically not quite precise [[driving from Ohio to Detroit does not involve crossing the Belle Isle bridge, "Detroit Rock City" was filmed in and around Cobo.

There's another Detroit reference in Seinfeld. George has to attend a funeral in Detroit. While at the funeral, he double dips his chip and argues with someone who says double dipping is like "putting your whole mouth right in the dip."

Also an episode of South Park featured the Red Wings beating up the boys' hockey team.

*Family Matters:

"Flying Bird" [[Season 6, Episode 10) - Carl and Steve were flying to Detroit on a chartered plane [[I think Carl for some type of Police Convention, and Steve for some type of Inventors get together). However, the pilot of the plane was someone Carl arrested in the past, and when recognizing Carl, the pilot jumped out of the flying plane. Carl and STeve had to land the plane themselves or risk crashing.

"Jailhouse Blues" [[Season 3, Episode 15) - Harriette's cousin, Clarence, came to visit the Winslows. When he first arrived, Laura asked him "How's the weather back in Detroit?" and Clarence responded "Ill!" Ultimately, Harriette immediately sent him packing when realizing he was a troubled youth beyond repair, as he got himself, Steve and Eddie arrested for Grand Theft Auto.

The movie "Need for Speed" has some scenes that take place in Detroit. Was filmed in 2013, and released in 2014. Campus Martuis is called "Woodward Circle".

Out of Sight, based on the book by Elmore Leonard, is set mostly in Detroit. I don't recall if any part of Up in the Air, another George Clooney movie, was actually set in Detroit, but there's at least one scene by the fountain at the McNamera terminal at metro airport.

Oh yeah, and there's an episode of Criminal Minds set around an arsonist on devil's night where the team comes to Detroit.

FX's Justified [[based on Elmore Leonard's book Fire In the Hole) has some protagonists who go down to Harlan County Kentucky but are based in Detroit...

i THINK one of the Dirty Harry films make mention of some bad guy coming in from Detroit...

Gran Torino was based on Detroit...

There was an episode of the Andy Griffith show where Barney & Floyd get taken captive in O'Malley's cabin by some escaped women prisoners. O'Malley happened to be in Dee-troit at the time, so the cabin was empty. Several references were made to O'Malley being in Dee-troit. He shows up near the end of the episode saying to Andy "Didn't you know I was in Dee-troit?".

Elmore Leonard's Freaky Deaky was set & filmed in Detroit a couple of years ago too.

In Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino was wearing an Orbit T-shirt. I think he got one after being interviewed by the paper, and liked the look of it.

Episode eight of the old Batman TV series has a scene at the conclusion where Grayson mentions a team called the "Motor City Wheels"-"Motor City" is presumably the Batman universe's equivalent of Detroit, similar to how London, UK is replaced by "Londinium".

In the same episode, he also mentioned a "Windy City", also presumably a Batman-ized Chicago.

The video was produced by Made In Michigan Entertainment and was worked on by several Oakland University current and former students, including Katy O'Lynnger, who worked as Production Coordinator for the project. The video was shot in Lincoln Park and was actually delayed for a day after having to scramble in pre-production because of losing Ecorse as a location at the last minute. The production features a 15-year old lead who whirls through a hypnotic rain dance, as well as three dogs, a hawk and an actual wolf. Katy O'Lynnger: "They say you should try to avoid working with kids and animals on set - and we had both." When it came to working with a wolf on set, she said "We had to clear the set and just let it roam around our set. . .it ended up looking really good." Other Oakland University grads and students who worked on the production include Angela Worrel, Geneva Brunetti, Jen Whalen, Erin Orlowski, Miles Felt, Salma Siddiqui and Alex Nardelli.

Not too happy that one of the cannibal villains in "Walking Dead" was sporting a Tigers cap.

In the Rockford Files' first few seasons, there are all these references to people from Detroit, none too complimentary, such as this one:

Gives me the sense that lots of people were leaving Detroit for L.A. around 1970. Sort of like the "black tags" in Texas in the 1980s.

Found some garish humor in Townsend's "Hollywood Shuffle" with the fictitious "There's a Bat in My House" "....can a black bat from Detroit find happiness with a white suburban family?"

Also, there's a character from The Venture Bros. [[Gawd! where do I dig this stuff up?) named Baron Underbheit who rules Underland [[a region smaller than Delaware that borders Michigan) with an iron fist with his minions Catclops, Girl Hitler, and Manic 8-ball. Among his minions is a pair of eunuchs, and one of them claims to be from Detroit.

Morgan Spurlock recently did a documentary about zoos, and the majority of what he shot was at the Detroit Zoo.

I also recently saw a commercial for some show called "Preachers of Detroit." I don't know anything about it, though.

Magnum PI's/ Tom Selleck often wore a Tigers cap, Martin played by Martin Lawrence was set in Detroit, as was Home Improvement.

Okay, before my time, but I think it was Miss Mary Morgan hosting Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie program at 3:30 on Sunday afternoons, who presented: "The Hardy's Ride High" [[1939) - Sixth of the Judge Hardy and family series. Judge James K. Hardy is brought the fabulous news from an attorney, that he could be the heir to 2 million dollars. In order to claim the inheritance, he and his family must leave for Detroit. Complications follow. There is a scene where young Andy Hardy [[Mickey Rooney) goes shopping in Hudson's. Of course no one on the picture left the Culver City studio. I don't recall any establishing shots of Detroit - there might have been to identify the location.

There's a multiple episode storyline in Mad Men that involves some of the characters traveling to Detroit to work with GM. And apparently the GM guys really like to party.

There are at least two X-Files that take place in Michigan. One called "Unruhe", which takes place in Traverse City, has a serial killer who abducts women and lobotomizes them but not before accidentally leaving mental images imprinted on undeveloped film. There were some references to Detroit in that one.

How about the 1989 film "Collision Course" starring Jay Leno and Pat Morita? I've never seen it but it was shot in Detroit [[Eastern Market for one) and the storyline is very Detroit-centric. Almost want to put it on my Netflix queue.

Scrubs: Dr. Cox is occasionally seen wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey. Actor John McGinley is a Red Wings fan and a close friend of former Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios, from their Malibu connection, whose name can be seen on the back of Cox's jersey. He has also been seen wearing a T-shirt for Cheli's Chili Bar, a small chain of restaurants owned by Chelios.

I actually reeeally liked Grosse Pointe Blank. "What are you doing in town, the Red Wings need another goon?"

Saw this last night at Burton Theater*

Pretty damn solid for a horror movie. Sets the rules pretty quickly and holds to them pretty firmly.

Not a TON of gore. However the film establishes just how brutal the stakes are in the first five minutes.

VERY suspenseful and tense. Just a completely fucked up monster concept. A sexually transmitted demon. Amazing the scares it gets when the monster is pretty much various humans.

A fair amount of blight porn around the 7 Mile/Woodward/John R area. And the Packard Plant and State Fair area. The University of Detroit Mercy campus stars in a pretty memorable scene [[I can say I was in a location in a major motion picture). Although why an obvious liberal arts class was being taught in the engineering building...

Anyway, the gag I was going to mention was how the Simpson just cross into Detroit city limits and the first thing Homer hits is a huge pothole [["Doh!"). I would've mentioned it earlier, but it was too soon on the heels of an incoming actual news report involving a killer pothole.

American Dad

"For Black Eyes Only" [[Season 9, Episode 13). This was basically one big parody of a James Bond movie. Stan [[who's portraying Agent Smith) and Roger [[who's portraying Tearjerker) traveled to Detroit from their home in Langley Falls, VA. Originally, it was avenge Francine's [[who's portraying Sexpun) death at the hands of Principal Lewis [[who's portraying Black Villain). However, come to find it, Black Villain planned to melt the polar ice caps and turn the rest of the world into a ocean except for his street in Detroit, so that he could have a beachfront property. This episode features a very nice and detailed shot of the city's skyline at the end. Also, while in Detroit, Stan and Roger visit a salon at the corner of Hayes and Philip [[which is funny because these streets don't even really intersect) for information.

Caught one minute of a Sci-fi flick set in Detroit called Vanishing on 7th St. with John Leguizamo and Hayden "Hey,-Look!-Somehow-I-Ended-up-in-Return-of-the-Jedi" Christensen.

I saw "Pride of the Yankees" last night with Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig. It's a sports film, so it has scenes of the N.Y. Yankees hopping from town to town. Detroit is mentioned many times. It was in Detroit, that Lou knew something was wrong and opted out from playing to better the team.

The Crow is based in Detroit as was the comic from which it was adapted. A large part of the plot involves Devil's Night fires and T-Bird refers to his gang members as "Motor City m*****rs"

My favorite filmed in Detroit but supposed to be someplace else movie is The Island. Not because of the movie itself, but a big gaff Michael Bay left in it. It's supposed to be LA 30 years in the future, but they left the giant Stevie Y add in Cadillac Square in the movie. It's fun picking actual Detroit out of the CGI additions too.

I cannot believe no one here already mentioned the movie "Four Brothers". The whole opening scene is Detroit porn with MCS prominently featured. Also the movie "The Island" has Detroit scenes, although that doesn't take place in Detroit.

I saw a Match Game '78 episode the other night on Buzzr, and one of the Super Match Questions were "Detroit [[blank)." The contestant said "Detroit Tigers" and Richard Dawson [[the celebrity she selected to match her) said "Detroit Lions."

Again....not too happy with how I come across this idiocy lately, but it seems the "age of the Seth" has been most unfriendly to Detroit, and Adult Swim is the channel to see it.

They get to go to a mlb game and sure enough, they sit in the upper deck at Tiger Stadium.

Didn't the Island use the People Mover as part of their set or filming? I remember reading a newsletter about the 20th anniversary in 2007 and they said there was a movie that used the train to help create their high tech futuristic trains because it was better to use some real reference than all CGI.

The wikipedia page for the RenCen lists several examples where it was used for filming or appeared.

Between that and Deus Ex, "videogames by French-speaking developers about near-future biotech boomtown Detroit" is on the way to becoming its own subgenre. Kind of neat though!

The newly released movie, Goosebumps starts out with a scene with a mother and son moving from New York City to a small town. The son asks his mother if she could have found a job as vice-principal in a better place like North Korea, Guantanamo Bay or Detroit.

There is a November 1984 episode of Super Password [[the week where Betty White and Jon Bauman were the celebrity contestants and also the second-to-last week where Rich Jeffries was the announcer before Gene Wood took over for the rest of the show's run [[it may have been midway through the following week though)), Buzzr will air it in a few minutes as of this original posting) where Detroit was the subject of one of the puzzles.

It took them through all five clues for them to finally figure out that the five words [[Lions, Tigers, Cadillacs, Motown, city) together were all connected with Detroit itself.

Ironically enough, in it's original run Super Password was scheduled by NBC for noon, yet WDIV already had news in that timeslot, so they [[probably) never cleared Super Password.

The 2002 movie Narc was a good one with Ray Liotta. Set in Detroit, an undercover narcotics cop investigates the murder of another undercover. It didn't win any awards, but definitely allowed you to relate to what a January in Detroit is like. Although I think most of it was filmed in Toronto.

One of the most ridiculous geographic mistakes I've ever seen in a movie was in the execrable Mel Gibson - Goldie Hawn vehicle "Bird on a Wire" where they make their escape from Detroit by getting on the ferry to Racine [[!?!).

Just finally got around to seeing "Rosary Murders". Very Detroit. Very Catholic.

I don't mind that it had the toned-out look of a late 70's/early 80's film. What did bother me is that it took the typically fictitious "Chessmaster" trope approach with the killer [[which was amusing with Dr. Phibes, but after "Se7en", every dang crime show felt that they had to have some OCD villain with lots creativity and lots of time on their hands to pull these things off. Getting really tired and really far-fetched.).
