:confused:Has anyone else noticed the hundreds of new "security" cameras that have recently popped up all over downtown?
:confused:Has anyone else noticed the hundreds of new "security" cameras that have recently popped up all over downtown?
Gannon has. Not me, I've never been in your downtown, but I like to keep abreast. Or two.
Security cameras are just things...but in the wrong hands they can be weapons. Coupled to a megalomaniac, they would most certainly be abused. At least Big Danny's new ones seem to only look down upon his new property aquisitions.
So, don't go sliding, grinding, and otherwise trashing his buildings with your skateboard, and you should be fine. Really. Although, for some reason, the skit in Monty Python's Life of Brian about the Roman graffiti taggers is stuck in my noggin now.
I'm working on my longshot paintball sniping accuracy, though. Some black ink from printer refill kits should do just fine...blinding whomever might use 'em for nefarious purposes.
You are absolutely right.
I mentioned previously I'm in favor of them. City owned cameras helped police catch the thief that stole my bike.
But Gannon is right. There's actually history of abuse. I remember reading a story where police were too aggressive during an arrest and footage showing the incident was deleted.
But that's really all that can be done. And if the whole system is privately run it's even more difficult to fuss with the footage.
It's ironic how residents in Chicago complain when those blue flashing cameras outside their house failed to pick up a break in. But that's how they were designed. The camera cycles don't focus onto private property in the auto mode. They must be overridden to focus on a private residence.
Are they new or are you just noticing them? In some ways I feel they are almost inconsequential. Now that just about everybody is equipped with a camera on their phone the recording of all activity is immense. The Boston marathon bombing is a good case and point. Law enforcement can now crowd source criminal investigation. Add to that the geo-locating of images and, well, it's a brave new world.
I've always said to folks that everything they do on the internet is forever. Maybe now need to amend that to say everything they do is forever.
Abuse is a valid issue. The best way to avoid abuse is disclosure. Allow citizens to see what's on the cameras. Go to the internet and see live what they are looking at -- with a 15 minute delay. You can spot abuse if its happening.
Not using a technology because abuse is possible is pretty stupid. Set reasonable rules. Create reasonable access to see if rules are being followed.
In a city like Detroit with crime as it is, I'll even take a small dose of abuse if it helps control crime. The important result is public safety and a vibrant city, done with large dose of freedom.
Are you guys talking about the traffic monitoring cameras/sensors on traffic light poles?
Attachment 19963
If so, we've discussed this before. Most of these aren't even cameras; they are traffic detection sensors.
Ive heard of people in other states getting tickets in the mail because of them. I see em as another way to financially abuse people with a little money left.
You're thinking of red-light cameras, or radar cameras. These of for monitoring traffic flows and adjusting traffic light timing.
I heard Gilbert has a massive secret security room set up in the Chase Tower. Hundreds of monitors with live feeds of in and around downtown 24/7. The man seems to genuinely be concerned about making downtown a more comfortable, friendly place for his employees to "live, work, and play". I guess more security cameras could possibly make some feel more secure and safe.
I saw several cameras being installed on Gilbert buildings this week. Mainly in and around 1001 Woodward and the old Kresgee.
no matter how much security and cameras or what have you. You still see things downtown that wouldn't fly almost anywhere else in America. Couple weeks ago before a ballgame, saw a guy all types of drunk with 3/4 of a handle of something or other right in front of the Fox looking for change. This is before a ballgame with police everywhere and they paid him no attention. Or the time before it last fall some guy followed me a block askin for $$$ because he just got out of jail. Doesn't quite inspire feelings of safety or security. These are the kinds of things people remember.
Is this just sport event stuff?
I've had that line pulled on me also, I would be willing to bet the guy did not just get out of jail. It's just another line panhandlers use, and that particular line is just supposed to be more intimidating. I'm sure it happens in any large city, and probably a fair number of smaller ones, too.
That's a serious risk. Footage can't be easily available to the public [[unless its an incident they were involved in). In this case, members of the public could do unimaginable harm compared to what government ever could. Just think of all the creepy stalkers or people that could manipulate footage and upload it to YouTube.
Access to these cameras should always require some sort of consent with a reason.
The security cameras are more of a visual deterrent than anything else. Trust me I've worked at a lot of retail outlets and the cameras did nothing to deter crime. With the sorry state of Detroit's police department I doubt the cameras are even marginally effective. They're just props put there by building owners because the insurance companies mandate them.
I call bullshit on the so-called traffic cameras...being 'only' for flow control. IF that were the case, the timing for these lights would be DIFFERENT than those without 'em. They are not...at least not any in the city. They continue to use the old relay switches for timing changes.
Plus, the first implementation of these was along Rochester Road in Troy. Despite the first week totally screwing up traffic, since they were not calibrated properly, they worked for a full year before the story in the Oakland Press reporting how many individuals the police were able to catch because of image recognition, such at someone with a handgun on their dashboard.
This after the authorities repeatedly said, during the sales and installation and implementation, that they would 'only' be used for flow control...just like MikeM repeated above. Then again, he does drone that all cloud-lines drawn in the sky are merely contrails. Still.
Cheers!
He totally zitted up the four corner pillars at One Woodward, as well...but at least it appears they are finally getting window treatments, at least on floor three as of Friday afternoon. Most of the FedEx supplies are no longer taped to the windows! Bravo, Dan.
Cheers
I think you have it backwards. Why can't footage be easily available? Why wait for creepy stalkers? The city should upload it themselves -- with a decent delay, perhaps 24 hours or more. Or maybe a random delay so its harder to use. A face/body fuzzyout is a thought. Use the technology. What happens on public streets is already quite public. Making it a little bit more public will help.
In Detroit, the timing of signals is only changed for special events. There isn't a dynamic system like in Oakland County.
Bullshit. The Autoscope cameras used as traffic sensors have no ability to pan, tilt, or zoom. The image was [[and probably still is) processed at the intersection. The Oakland Traffic Operations Center did not have the ability to get the camera feed to the Ops center even if they wanted to.
It has been 5 or so years since I worked with the road commission on signal stuff. Things may have changed since then, but I doubt it based on the bandwidth needs of even VGA signals given the ~1,000 locations that have dynamic signals.
RO Resident, don't waste your time. We've explained this to Gannon before, but like most conspiracy theorists, his version of reality is the only valid one.
Gannon... a handgun on the dashboard? Really??
And how does one correlated the stupidity of someone having a handgun on their dashboard... to being the reason that they were arrested because of a traffic camera? Couldn't it have been because someone in another vehicle driving alongside may have seen the handgun and called 911?? Or maybe a cop saw someone with a handgun on the dashboard?
Anyone with the low intelligence of having a handgun on their dashboard probably doesn't have the smarts of connecting the dots to a traffic camera...
http://juneauempire.com/stories/0826...00572187.shtml
This is a good article. I've overseen the installation of these. This whole thing about video being sent to the police and guns being detected on dashboards is ridiculous.
During the night... at 11 Mile Rd. at I-94... the 11 Mile Rd. light stays green virtually all the time... with the pedestrian traffic timer counting down the seconds [[until red light) over and over and over again... but still keeping the light for 11 Mile at green. Only when a car comes off the I-94 ramp does the light count down and actually change to red for 11 Mile Rd. traffic.
This is all handled by the motion detection sensors mounted on nearby poles.
I'm pretty sure you have it backwards. First Gannon mentions that there could be abuse of the system. Yes, there is. it's happened with the occasional corrupt city employee that's [[attempted) to wipe out footage that became publicly available.
But now you are asking city government to actively manipulate live footage? Yes, delaying footage 24 hours and fuzzing out faces is altering footage. So what is it? First you advocate for transparency, now you want government to delay and alter live cameras feeds?
What's wrong with the current method of obtaining footage. You call the police department and ask for it. Cite a reason, they take down your name and send you an email with the link to footage in the time period requested.
I'm stumped by the fact that people on one hand are afraid of big brother watching street cameras....which they hardly have the resources to do, but are totally okay with a large population of people with a handful of creeps and thieves that could survey whenever a person leaves their home.
I'm OK with the current method you describe as well. Delay and fuzzing out is not necessarily 'altering feeds'. If you're using black-box hardware intended for this purpose to do both these functions, there's no opportunity for 'manipulation'. Its is automated and dispassionate. Could a rogue employee 'break' the machine? Sure. They could just 'unplug' the machine. But a good, well-designed piece of hardware would give 99% of the result for 1% of the cost.
The exact methods aren't important. What's important is that the feeds are widely available with as little human intervention as possible.
Your method is OK, but I'm sure you see the opportunity for it to be manipulated. Oh, we don't have that footage. Oh, here's that footage, but its my version I created in my basement that doesn't show the cop beating the old lady.
I'm only remembering the article from the Oakland Press. It was a while ago...but I can remember the household I was working in. Herb Misch's daughter and son-in-law...back when that great gent was still alive, which puts it prior to 2003.
The article said the police were aided by the traffic flow cameras on Rochester Road, and there was image recognition used to filter what was fed to them.
This was long before I'd gathered enough experience and data to become a dyed-in-the-koolaid Conspiracy Theorist...but I'd add this to a long list of things which have caused me to seriously doubt most official cover stories now.
And, just because someone can 'guarantee' that one series of installed devices isn't available for this sort of surveillance...doesn't mean they all are benign.
I can just as easily show one that has obvious extra-traffic purposes. Say...like this one at Warren and Dickerson. I pass it nearly every day. Today I stopped to take a few snapshots of it.
Attachment 19969
There IS a pan-n-tilt mechanism, and it is the only one at the intersection. Not even the busiest one around, either. This one always bugs me.
Cheers
Good. Put them on every corner. Let's see who commits every single crime and where they go. Arrest them all. Inform people if they want to commit a crime, Detroit is not the place to do it.
Yeah, there is a "personal liberty" question. But I will gladly walk down a street, knowing I am being watched by "Big Brother," if it means we can track every criminal from a murderer to a thief to a vandal, and make this a safer city.
Nice try. It is never facing the way I approach the intersection. When it moves as I make my way through, then I'll begin to be truly concerned. Then the games begin.
As for YOU, jtf, did you know one of our founding fathers had something specific to say about those like you?! You might want to pay attention to this.
Benjamin Franklin, 1755Quote:
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
That wisdom still applies. To you, and everyone who has been conditioned and programmed and worn down to accept the premise that anyone deserves to live in a police state.
Good luck with that.
Sincerely,
John
Thanks, MikeM. I shudder to think of this being used by Hackel to track his political enemies, he is EXACTLY the type of megalomaniac who needs to be restricted from using this technology. Same with Napolean. Two of my favorite sheriff. Yeah, I know Hackel has gone up a notch...but he would still have access to this stuff.
The traffic sensing cameras use some form of capture, there are only so many ways to translate motion into electrical current useful for analysis in any shape. These sensors are usually in the form of a CCD chip, and software can use the output of it many ways. As long as there is a clear lens...there is NO telling what is behind it.
The whole system could be designed like our current internet/phone network nationwide, which has one apparent purpose to the public...yet another to those with the necessary security clearance to know. There is an entire parallel network which echoes the public digital traffic, and no reason why these systems cannot be made similarly.
In plain sight...this system has been introduced all over the country. Detroit is not the only town to have these cameras magically appear. They are largely not in the suburbs, though. I've read things about sophisticated cellular tracking systems as well, and always thought THAT was the reason for the phone giveaways during this administration.
All I'm saying is I've seen 'em go up, many in seemingly illogical places. In a land where there supposedly isn't any money to fund schools and other good societal programs...it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever that there can be monies available for this bullshit.
Unless there is some overall plan...and any consideration of such leads to very dark places indeed.
Honky Tonk, I keep telling you...aluminum foil doesn't do much at all. If you want true filtering, get you some vintage TIN foil...or invest in the real stuff, MU Metal. It seems to form better without rampant wrinkling, too. You'll be stylin' and profilin' in no time. Without that pesky cranial electromagnetic interference.
Cheers!
I have seen those new cameras. There are aslo well hidden ones, too. It will help catch all the yahoos runnning about in Downtown Detroit.
They need to get better cameras because half the time a mother wouldn't recognize the pictures of criminals they show on TV after a shooting or robbery.
Or worse yet, turn in their own son because they thought they DID recognize him...when in reality it was some white punk wearing a mask that was clearly based on boxer Mike Tyson's mug.
The day that hit the news, the Drudge Report had a picture of the mask AND one of Mike Tyson in unrelated news...and other than the tattoo, it was obvious the mask was of his face.
I'm on both sides of this...cameras ARE handy when they catch someone doing something clearly illegal and harmful and destructive, but they become weapons in the wrong hands if aimed at others instead.
So, while I agree with the need for greater resolution in the devices, we also need better ethics and transparency over their use.
I say total transparency. Let everyone tap into every camera at any time. But keep a record of who does what when, so stalking and premeditation of crimes can also be proven. Let that all be crowd-sourced and operated. Each police feed would only be redacted when they have an active warrant, and only for the duration of that warrant.
Bring it on, then. With everything public, nothing could be deleted. Hell, let my dashcam link to a service where I could send tickets to those who are observed doing something stupid and dangerous on the road. Let me get some of the take....
...and of course, hopefully nobody is watching MY driving. That might narrow the profit margin a wee bit.
The Free Press has a story today about e-coli contamination at a Traverse City beach.
Quote:
... storm drain cameras spotted hundreds of pounds of raccoon feces at the site.
- I hope those cameras aren't dedicated to just watching storm drains.
- Hundreds of pounds of raccoon feces?! Yikes!
i am kind of sure the cameras are for DOT and the antennas are for emergency vehicles that can change the light to GREEN to facilitate fast response.
What about the drones flying above the city that can tell if your zipper is down.
My friend in London had a few to many and needed to relive himself , not being in Midtown US, he ducked down a dark ally behind a dumpster , it was dark but before he was finished there was two policeman standing behind him, even in dark ally ways there are pesky night vision cams.
Where I am at emergency vehicles have a strob and there is a blue light that looks like the old time insulators on the traffic light, the strob activates the light change, used to be at night time you could flash a led light at the blue light and change the light to green now it is strobe only.
They are definately busting people for pissing Downtown, which is awesome.
Uh, i wasn't talking about traffic light cameras. It is an interesting topic of discussion tho. Thank you Mr. Gannon. I am talking about cameras that are stacked on cameras on top of cameras downtown. It's pretty noticeable. I'm wondering if they would edit the footage of my escapades downtown into one hollywood blockbuster called "Wasn't Me". I prefer hoodies and sunglasses to aluminum foil. Just because you're paranoid, don't mean their not after you.
I believe that the rumors of DG's security bunker to be very true. It's in a sub basement of his building that was formerly a bank vault with a story and a half wall of cameras linked to the furthest reaches of the city and ex government security agents manning them. He has the sheriffs to back up his security team. The present WCS Benny, is running for mayor, who might be a good choice. This is an interesting twist. He also pulled a high ranking state police official out of retirement to help him hold it down. They can track you for several miles. It's a safe bet they have read this before you have... A private entity not only mans the cameras, but has a three tier security team in place to protect private property with more resources than the local police. I'm not really upset about this because I know how things can work, but damn. I will miss the bums, like Radio below.
@downtowndude- looks like we have something to talk about over limp bacon, and jam.

Nice. Thanks, UrbanPheasant.
I guess I didn't piss the OverLord off too much then.
But he's collecting a nice record of his employees littering and their rides illegally parking that we can get subpoena'd, the city would collect a nice bundle from those fines alone.
Time to view the area with infrared-sensing goggles to see exactly where any auto-focus cameras are able to point. I think the GenI nightvision tools and that old Sony videocamera that can see through clothes might come in handy as well. Heh.
What was that about the Macomb County sheriff having access to some cameras?! Put that into the hands of a barely-elected Wayne County badge-holder in cahoots with whomever financed their election...back it with another well-backed mayor and their police chief. We're straight into Big Brother City.
Next step, Omnicorp co-opts the RoboCop statue with the real thing. Updates it with a ridiculous kindergarten color scheme. The rest we've already seen...and there is apparently a remake being planned for next year. Perhaps they're going to film it in real time, this would be one production the governor would really get behind.
This is what I'm talking about...Attachment 20292
Wow I'm not sure why they need all those dome cameras. While more expensive, there are panoramic cameras that can catch a much wider area all at once at high resolutions and you don't need to install a bunch of those. But then again what's shown above appears to be the cheapest option for getting the most coverage.
Is that on the corner of the Vinton Building? Are there similar ones on other buildings in the area.
Nearly identical [[gruesome, zitlike) clusters appeared on One Woodward a short while after Dan Gilbert purchased it. Every corner, plus one at the very top of the building...like the one on the CAY across the street...which must have the mother of all zoom lenses to be anywhere near effective.
I bet ol' Danny will be busy with that one when the Scientologists finally move into the old Raymond James' Building across the street. Not sure they're going to like being under surveillance...by one clearly not Clear.
To be fair, though, he DID finally get some window coverings to replace those FedEx and UPS supplies taped to the windows of 3-5 and 7-9. If only they could be kept completely closed to dither the visual cacophony of those custom streetmap light fixtures.
But I'm wondering how we can score the paintball wars, perhaps that is the reason for the duplicate cameras. I think it is funny that they think these will be out of the range of those taggers who can hit the side of a freeway overpass in the dark.
I used a cute plastic vise-on-a-stick up north at a friend's summer home a weekend ago...to spray the eaves for wasp nests. Thing had a trigger on a string...and could reach >25 feet up fully extended. He said he bought it at Home Depot. It wouldn't take someone with nefarious intent but a minute to foul all of these dome cameras.
I'm just sayin'...
I've noticed that the newbie Quickens all seem to wear their employee badges when they are walking around the downtown area. This used to be a solid no-no, since it identified a person's employer...and/or gullibility of the wearer, especially in cities with significant convention traffic.
It is always a bad idea to openly wear convention badges outside the venue.
But these badges have become so common I suspect they have purpose...so these employees can be identified by the Control Center in the old bank building. I'd bet they are RFID tagged, to help automate the surveillance.
That would be one reason for the multiple pan-n-tilts at corner locations. That might be the cheapest way to look everywhere at once...if these things auto-aim and focus on RFID, which would be logical since the system is obstensibly for employee safety and security, one per corner might get a little jumpy.
LOL this is so crazy I had to respond. Are you serious? God forbid a company who wants to move downtown and try to do something for the community. Wish it was all a barren wasteland again. Sometimes this forum is insane.
PS: Quicken employees wear their badges because it is required to get in buildings, buddy. You know, like every other major US city?
Are they actually visible? Seems like a bigger risk IMO.
Yes, nearly everyone who works in a major downtown building in other cities has a badge. But we keep them in our wallets, and the systems in place are still capable of giving clearance within the building.
Oh please, RFID scanning is still not all that great in longer ranges. Even transit companies can't get suitable range within 10 feet. They can only track people at turnstiles with current [[affordable) technology...and the credit card or transit card scanning on those machines hardly works half the time. In the case of office buildings, when they swipe or key in. But cameras? No.
So, you're either near-sighted or legally blind.
Wearing a corporate badge outside the company makes you a distinct TARGET for those who think nefariously. Anywhere from simply theft to corporate espionage...not to mention the potentially bad PR if said employees [[publicly advertising their allegiance) engage in bad behavior. It is immediately linked to the corporate identity. That is simply stupid in so many ways I cannot begin to list them.
So, yeah...in our little pond, these fishes don't mind waving bait around for the sharks. I call it simple ignorance, but it may be directed from on high...
That might explain the lonely one at emporer-height in each of those clusters around the perimeter of One Woodward...
But there are many ways to identify a person automatically...facial and gait recognition being likely the most common, after cell-phone id. You cannot tell me THAT doesn't have longer ranges, you can be triangulated within a cell zone. RFID has powers that are not publicly known...you only hear about the 'features' that are welcome to the populace.
If it wasn't effective, why would they be pushing it so hard?!
You'll hear most of the unwelcome capabilities from those who use scanners and wander around cracking and hacking...and some of those reports are damning. RFID is one of the most insidiously dangerous technologies ever.
Lol, paranoid much? Walking around campus martius [[between your own company's buildings) with your badge on is dangerous, huh? I don't walk around off hours with my badge on. When at work and walking to another building? Yea, probably going to keep it on for that dangerous two minute walk. I'm risky like that.
The few times I've done photography for my blog in the Campus Maritus area - an immersive experience in which I might sit in a single spot and take pictures for 5-10 minute spans - I always get these sneaking suspicions that I'm somehow being watched or have been "noticed". That might sound paranoid, and I recognize that it very well may be, but I have a hunch that they REALLY watch the area.
As long as you're not carrying any pressure cookers, you should be good to go.
Here's a great rant on "The Paranoia of The State" and its motivation: Hartmann: Bring Back my Boring, Predictable, Responsible Bureaucrats!
I saw this one out on the streets the other night and had to take a pic. I heard a story about one of these popping up at a local shop. Rock security team showed up, distracted the shop keep while another agent took it off the door. Sounds like they might be a little self conscious about the image being portrayed by all of this "security". I am surprised the news hasn't covered this.... LOL.

as was said earlier, those new small ones on light poles are for emergency vehicles and fire. they will switch geen for them so they dont have to slow down and go around cars in left lane and stop those crossing on green.
all big cities have them.
It was a sticker not a poster.
Here's a fine update to this thread.
http://www.infowars.com/new-mesh-net...s-spy-cameras/
In light of the new NSA devices that building owners are being forced to bolt onto the sides of their buildings...
...and if your city has recently begun replacing streetlights, it is roughly damn certain that they have listening devices built into them.
The network is nearly finished being installed, ready for the next Hitler.
This reminds me of the story about so called "black boxes" installed in cars to gather driving and crash information. These already exist - they are kind of necessary to judge when to deploy airbags. But this was about the feds mandating the type and format of the information gathered in order to share info more easily. I thought it was a great idea, but reading comments and even some FB posts, people were all over Big Brother watching them and whatnot. I thought "How silly. Don't you realize that whatever info is gathered, you're just a data point and no one really cares about you...". And then it dawned on me. What people really fear more than being watched is the reality of their own insignificance.
I actually do not care!
Hang tight, the writing has been on the wall since 9/11 and the gradual erosion of our privacy and independence.
All I'm doing is describing what is happening in plain sight, with supporting documentation when available...you can take it or leave it, obviously.
Cheers

Infowars? That website is full of complete whackjobs. Didn't bother to open the link.
This one caught my eye on the Farmington Hills installation of the light poles...
When it's plugged in it will be hacked. Let's find out when the Jones are on vacation.
What I wouldn't pay to be a fly on the wall at the next Farmington Hills public City Council meeting!! :p
And these stories are from two years ago. I imagine they've come a long way since then.
I noticed some kind of new camera-like devices mounted at the traffic light in historic downtown Utica. At first I thought they were just traffic detectors to help speed up that notoriously slow traffic light. Then I noticed it used to take about 52 seconds to cycle but now it can sometimes take over 90 seconds even with no other traffic present! Argh!
I don't know what they are but if they were supposed to speed up traffic, they're failing.
I have a confession: I have grown to hate technology. LOL!
The whole world contains what some consider whackjobs, you just gonna stay home under the covers?! LOL...
I found the story through Matt Drudge. I seldom bother with anything associated with Alex Jones, but this article had documentary evidence.
Evidence from whackjobs is still evidence. Sorry.
But you can always choose what to ignore to bolster your ignorance. Good luck with that!
Yeah, most people don't want to admit this probability.
It is so likely now, we've gone well past the tipping point.
According to some, the dude is already in office. I refuse to believe that, but then again, I may be choosing my own ignorance there. Always on guard against that...
Yeah, there are always little evildoers who choose to profit off the plans of the bigger ones...even if only opportunists. This is very enabling technology.
We are getting new streetlights for no good reason in GPP, too. All with new wooden poles, too, that is a bunch of work.
And then there is the new light authority in the city...
