Major music festival coming to...Belle Isle.

Did not see this posted here so figured I would see what people think.

So Metallica put on this big festival in New Jersey this year and have announced it will be coming here next year.

Turns out, when they say Detroit, they actually mean Detroit and not DTE. The last 2 pages of this show it being on Belle Isle. Not only that, but for the next 3 years.

Has a music festival ever been on Belle Isle before? Any thoughts on this coming here or the logistics of it?

People still care about and listen to Metallica?

I still remember my freshmen year at college in the dorms with that T3 connection. Logging into Napster only to be given a message "banned by Metallica". [[It was SO difficult to change my IP and log right back in.) Ever since then that band has made me sick. I can't even listen to their old "good" music anymore.

But hey, at least they are actually going to use Belle Isle for something that will generate revenue for once.

Metallica? On Belle Isle? 3 YEARS IN A ROW?????? BUMMER!

WRIF used to do concerts on Belle Isle a long time ago. They were stopped because shockingly, they attracted long-haired drinking deadbeat types!

Don't forget the WABX Air Aces kite ins.

I think this is fantastic.
While Lars Ulrich is kind of a punk when it comes to not sharing his music, Metallica does have a "Taper Town" at their shows where an area on the main floor is sectioned off and ppl can bring recording equipment and tape their shows live. I believe the Grateful Dead started doing this early on in their career. The Dead never made much off their albums but always were always top at selling out shows each year. They PLAYED for their money, always touring, and they are still truckin. Isnt that what musicians are supposed to do?

I cant wait for this festival.

This is pretty cool. I was a huge Metallica fan and still occasionally listen to their music. Depending on ticket prices I might check it out.

Lars and Metallica did a lot of damage to themselves when they were complaining about Napster back in the day. I don't know what they were thinking. The funny part is that it's MUCH easier to get free music now than it was back then. With Napster, you had to look up each individual song and download it, now with torrents, you just download entire discographies, all nicely organized with albums and tracklistings.

Ironically at that time, I actually bought and owned my Metallica albums, I was simply downloading their songs to have them on my computer for convenience [[I didn't realize I could just ripp songs off the CD and convert to MP3). Technically they "banned" me for downloading music I already owned.

Today I probably have almost a Terabyte of music, didn't pay for it, nor did I download it. I simply swap music with friends, which technically isn't illegal. I support live music however, and will gladly pay to see musicians I like in person.

I almost want to download a Metallica discography just to piss the band off [[and then delete it).

How much "damage" could Metallica have done to themselves given their continued popularity and sales?

Myself, I was taught not to steal.

I wonder how many times someone said that about the Stones?
Just cause they're not bangin their heads like they were 25 yrs old does not mean they cant make new and kickass music. A musician is a musician, thats their craft, thats their art, it doesnt go away. If they continue to want to create I believe they will. Maybe they wont have all the success as the young hungry group they were but artists have their ups and downs and problems and age and... I wouldnt count them out.

Not sure if Hatfield has stayed on the wagon though.

When I was in high school and they were breaking through, about 1985 I was definitely not into them as I was punk rock. It took me a few years to ignore the cliques. Fuck a punk rock, fuck a burnout, a preppie, a emo. If the music makes me tap my foot Im gonna tap it.

I think it's cool no matter what band it is. I think it's a great idea.

I still think Movement should be on Belle Isle too!

It would be amazing to see Movement grow large enough to fill Hart Plaza, Belle Isle, AND the Chene Park amphitheater. Then again, that much bass energy will take away the need for any weak building demolition for a few miles...and we can kiss away any goodwill with the fine folks in Windsor, at least the ones who can still hear over the hum.

That said, at the Palace a few years back, Godsmack gobsmacked us by knocking Metallica off the stage in every way...it was almost embarrassing. Even with their video support...

So I hope Metallica has a new A-game.

I wonder if the HoeDown folks are watching this...anyone know what their attendance was down at the Ford Field corral this year?!

Whether or not I broke any copyright laws is still a grey matter now, and it was even more-so back in 2000 when Lars was crying about it. From what I remember, Napster was free and didn't make any money, as it was a peer-to-peer download system. I can plug my external hard drive into my friends computer and drop and drag every MP3 he has onto it and I have broken no laws.

Perhaps Metallica should have patented CD burners that came standard on EVERY computer at the time, and patented the ideas of blank CDs that you can burn songs too. Last I check, it's not illegal to burn CDs, it's only "illegal" if you sell that CD. Maybe even if the record labels didn't reject the whole idea, they could have banked big time.

As much as I hate Kid Rock and his music, one of the good things he has said is "Music sharing doesn't bother me, the people have just found a way of screwing the record labels the same way the record labels have been screwing the artists for decades, and it's beautiful."

Support musicians by seeing them live. That's how they make their money.

Sit around turntable and listen to the Beatles, Stones, Stooges -- whatever. Today we do the same but don't have to sit around the turntable. I've made music. I've toured. I've released records for other musicians. I certainly do not share for free.

I think I am one of many of my generation who cringe at the very mention of "Metallica" regardless of the music.

The industrial conglomerates that have fought to preserve Mickey Mouse's and the like's copyrights have reaped what they've sown. They've needed to adapt their business models. Also the internet does allow many more musicians to make money from their craft than before. It's just there are fewer people who would do the work of building up your band for you anymore.

Thats too bad noise. Small and medium venue artists are thriving because of P2P sharing. Its what brings people to shows It is the mega-bands that are crying foul.

Regardless, this is something different for Detroit and as long as it works out, its good for the citizens of the city.

Any mention as to what venue on Belle Isle that Lars and the boys will be playing at?

For some reason I just thought of the regular attendees of the City Council meetings. I am not sure how this could possibly happen in their Park.

When I think of a musician I think of someone who doe his job onstage. Im a Deadhead, and have much respect for the Grateful Dead who never made much off of record sales but tour after tour, until Jerrys death they sold out almost every show. I also love Steely Dan who almost never played live.
Im just excited about these shows, its going to be a great thing for Detroit and hope it becomes a regular thing. While I love Metallica, Ive been seeing the RHCPs live since 87 at the Nectarine Ballroom and as soon as I saw their first show I said that someday they would be playing the Palace. Sure enough I saw them there years later. I hate big venues but still wont be able to stay away. I hope they allow camping on BI, that would make for an amazing weekend. Probably wont happen but Im keeping my fingers crossed.
Could BI become a regular summer venue for shows like this? That's a boatload of money coming in for the city.
Is there enough parking for this type of event on the island?
I hope somebody brings some weed.

I would like for them to hold this in YOUR backyard, Django, so you could enjoy 10,000 people f-ing up YOUR neighborhood. People pay premium taxes to live across from the island, and they have to deal with this crap? A head-banging R&R show? Do you have any idea what that island is going to look like when they're done? Have you ever seen what Hart Plaza looks like after the Techno Fest? Now take all that trash and dump it among trees and foilage. Who's going to clean that mess up? Because it is not a controlled situation. Some people cannot handle distractions. Some cannot deal with Stage Fright. There are MANY reasons why some very technical musicians might not want to play to random audiences who often talk and text and eat through their performances.

There are some musicians who are such control freaks, they play every instrument on their albums...like Gino Vanelli, although he had some help from family.

Some musicians are SO critical of themselves, they require total control on what everyone and anyone hears of their work! Those same ones usually don't know when to say when on any particular recording, too.

The Grand Prix, Air Races, Gold Cups all end early evening and don't run until midnight. I'm willing to bet that the sound level from the "bands" will exceed the sound level from the cars running in the Grand Prix. No, this is NOT the best way to make money off of the island, it'll screw the island and surrounding areas up. As far as Django picking up trash for a few hours after the Dally, commendable, but I'm not that impressed. This concert is just someones idea to exploit, make a fast buck, then split, nothing more.

On a busy summer weekend filled with picnics, family reunions, and other events...how many people use the island?! At least this event will be able to pay for cleanup...I don't see the partiers near the Coast Guard station doing anything of the sort.

Who's going to make sure these "rules" are enforced? Do they plan on thinning out the police force even further and having them patrol the concert? Exactly. The apartment resonates from Hart Plaza 3.3 miles away, and these clowns want to run this almost 24/7? I totally disagree. I see people stacking up trash by the curb or around the garbage cans after the family reunions. If there were enough workers, like @ Wind Mill Point, it could be picked up immediately. They should move this to Hart Plaza or Campus Martians, where people actually enjoy this kind of music, and quit annoying the residential areas. Looks to me like a last ditch effort to totally sell out Belle Isle.

No tents allowed. No chairs. No hard-sided coolers. No outside beverages beyond TWO sealed plastic name-branded water bottles. No illicit or illegal substances of any kind.

NO PARKING ON THE ISLAND, only shuttles from downtown parking venues, insuring that businesses in that area will have some potential of seeing these bodies and selling them something they need.

It really sounds as if they've got it covered.

And I see NOTHING about it going 24/7, Honky Tonk, where did you hear that?!

I've also tried searching for potential negative news articles about the event in NJ...so far, nothing comes up. So why'd they move it?! Anyone get an answer for that?

Other than the fact that we ARE Detroit Rock City and dudes will drive up from TOLEDO for this!

For the record, I too felt like Bad Brains about Metallica after Lars went all apeshit about Napster. I love old school Metallica though [[Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets, etc.).

Add RHCP and the Deftones and I'm good to go.

And DJango, there is no way I'm going to a concert without weed. ;)

I have no desire to see Metallica or RHCP, and as someone who lives within earshot of Belle Isle I can't say that I'm looking forward to this. But putting up with public events is part of living in the middle of a big city. I can't imagine the noise here will be any worse than the Grand Prix, Gold Cup, Chene Park shows, or, goodness knows, Movement [[I think my ears are still ringing from that unrelenting assault).

Overall, if properly managed, this may be a good thing for the island. I do hope that the organizers are held to some sort of standards when it comes to providing security, clean-up, etc. From the sounds of things in Gannon's post above though, it sounds like they may be on the right track.

And who knows, if this is successful. and goes off reasonably problem-free, folks may finally get over the idea of B.I. as some sort of "no man's land", and we may get other types of shows and festivals there too. A return of, say, the Symphony would certainly be welcome.

I don't list to any of these bands much anymore [[probably burned myself on them as a youth), but I think the Deftones are probably the only band doing anything interesting out of the bunch, as I quite like their newer stuff.

Metallica and RHCP both have that "well, I dig their old stuff" thing going [[especially Metallica). As a bass guitar enthusiast, I still wouldn't mind seeing Flea though. He's an interesting bassist.

I just had an image pop into my head, while re-reading this thread over coffee.

The line to wait for shuttles to get back to one's vehicle at the end of the night is going to be hellish.

The parking downtown has me concerned, since this will put thousands of folks in a place to be exploited by any enterprising individuals with criminal intent. They'd better pay for increased police presence, since they'll need it at the event and near the offsite parking.

I like everything still, overall, but these will have to be addressed to smooth out potential flow-choke and friction issues with the crowd.

I hope they allow for more then just contracted buses in and out. For instance I may go to a wings game and park at Andrews on the river, get some food or drink and take the shuttle while my car is in their lot for free. This is how the locals benefit.

Reminds me of my old Calculus teacher. He would get so mad at baseball announcers saying the pitcher had good velocity and location on his pitches.

Funny you mention acceleration, I was talking about velocity to a co worker and he says that is acceleration. He then tells me that does not mean speeding up, it means change of speed. In other words slowing down is also acceleration.

Acceleration is the delta, or the change, in rate...so it can be positive or negative. So, slowing down would not just be acceleration but in negative values.

Velocity is the actual rate of motion, and as far as I know can only be positive...unless, I guess, when you consider the vector...since velocity of a thing has to be compared with or referenced to something else...we assume a fixed point on this relative plane of the surface of the Earth.

I'd guess it might be expressed as positive heading towards you at that fixed point, and negative heading away. Might be another name for it when direction is considered.

So yeah, acceleration is the change in velocity, in positive or negative values.

It's negative if you're going in reverse. No mystery there.

In the Calculus sense, acceleration is the derivative of velocity and so velocity is the integral of acceleration. Mathematicians have an obsession about inverse operations. Derivatives and integrals are inverse operations.

Not to promote threadjacking, but this velocity thing is getting pretty interesting, and informative. Maybe the velocity of tourism will increase if this concert is successful. Or would that be acceleration?

We need to get that old band from Detroit to reunite. The name was a play on accelerate, something like xcelr8. Wasnt it guys from The Look or in that genre.
