Welcoming afghans to detroit

Greetings Forum Phenoms,

Resettlement - Afghans to Detroit. Just asking. With my cursory knowledge of the housing stock in Detroit, I am wondering whether a goodly number of boarded up houses could be rehabbed quickly enough to help create a community for these refugees. Yes, I am mindful of situations like competition for jobs with the established community. Another group of non-Christians within the city proper. Possible terrorist “plants” within this group. Racism and Xenophobia. All of the hallmarks that greeted other large contingents of immigrants [[The Hmong community in Minnesota comes to mind, as well as, Cubans, Central Americans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos.)

A significant number of Afghans could change the landscape of the city - over time. Would 50,000 people be too many? Not enough?

Whatever Detroit gets Afghans, it will be up to 1,000 people. Other Afghans will be going to other U.S. cities if they have families there.

Detroit is not getting an Afghan community. My comment is not a race issue. It's an ethnic issue.

Ahead of the Afghans are the illegals and other asylum seekers entering from our open southern borders.

We've been late [Michiganders] to see much evidence of that impacting us here -- as compared to our southern states. I hear a great deal about our sanctuary city status socially but what's on the books?

Are our obligations socially or politically-based? Do we have the infrastructure?

In the mean time, there may be some resumption of 'remain in Mexico' per our SCOTUS [as concern re. open borders during a pandemic mounts]. We shall see how that bows shortly or not....

Bottom-line is that some Detroiter's far less reflexively concerned with being called 'racist' may decry already scare city services diverted to incoming residents over our existing populations. Low or high!

Where there's abandoned property that speaks to existing citizens displaced that could use the housing. We DO have a homeless population problem. We have current populations suffering from inadequate shelter, medical care, high mortality rates for children, unemployment, etc.

Resources are really not infinite. Can we practically accept the largess of Afghan's seeking shelter in the US, considering our existing lack of long-term resources [withstanding cranking up the money-printing machine]?

Especially as we're already tied to political obligations of keeping our southern borders open to illegals, incoming.

This is where we were on re-populating the city in 2015. Where are we now....?

In another thread, there was talk about all the unsold unoccupied condos being built in Detroit. No need to rehab houses, they can stay in those.

Refugee resettlement is organized/subcontracted by catholic charities,the city would have to coordinate interest with them.

Refugees and relocation is totally different then mass immigration,being a burden on the host city is factored in and funded on the federal level.

Afgans are as much as a mix religious wise as we are,if they were not a majority Christian they would have stayed where they were at.

Most refugees and immigrants from the ME is kinda of a generational thing,even more so from there as the younger family members quickly embrace western values and are already embracing the whole technology thing.

There has been massive women’s rights groups over there,considering women and the females in general were to be seen and not heard or schooled,or allowed to do much of anything,they have already been introduced into the whole western world culture thing so they are already assimilated in a way,verses some in the past that were just thrust into a new world.

I do not see a mass movement of 50,000,the city could not handle it nor could any other city.

1000 to 5000 maybe? This is not a group of people that would expect everybody else to adapt to them verses them assimilating.

I am sure it would be a case of banding together as a support vehicle but they are already pretty much westernized and they understand freedom of choice etc.

Its up to you guys but a few thousand here,a few thousand there would not be a shock or burden on the community.

Refugees are headed to 4 places with capacity of up 25,000. Fort Bliss, Fort McCoy, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst + Fort Lee. These are temporary stops for eventual resettlement.

We were originally told that part of our mission was to bring in interpreters and others who risked their lives to help us and their families. The estimate of the number of those refugees was between 21-30,000 refugees. As of this morning, the US operation had evacuated 70,000 people. That number was not broken down into Americans and Afghanis but there were only supposed to have ben 10-15,000 Americans there and we haven't heard that most of them are out yet. The number of Afghanis being brought out then is far greater than the number we were originally told it was our mission to bring out. Since Monday when our CIA director visited the Taliban in Kabul [[coincidence?), the Taliban has been facilitating a much more orderly flow of refugees or whoever they are. At his rate, those federal facilities will be overflowing before these refugees are vetted and properly quarantined for Covid. Whatever numbers Detroit is willing to graciously take in, a new executive order makes it illegal for any local or state government to limit the number of refugees the federal government decides to send it.

Highly unlikely due to the shortage of building materials, licensed tradespeople, and time lag in getting all the building and other permits for boarded up houses before getting an occupancy permit. If they were to be settled in metro, they'd most likely be taken in by families in Dearborn and settle there.

^ majority in Dearborn are Shia where as a majority of Afghans are Sunni .

Globally Shia only make up 15% of the Muslim community.

I doubt there are enough families Sunni in Dearborn,but I do not know the breakdown there.

This is why Afghanistan is know as the graveyard of empires,because the groups are always fighting each other,no need in stirring the pot.

They are not dumb hick farmers a majority are actually quite educated in technology,engineering etc. probably at a much higher rate then most are here,they do the same things over there as here so some will be trades people,taxi drivers or restaurant owners or servers etc.

If you are short on trades people incentivize the movement of trades people,they can fix their own house.

The land bank can take a somewhat livable house and put a trades person in there with a three year payment deferment and give them a chance to get on their feet.

They get support from the charities for months to cover basics,so they would not be a burden,and you have acquired a new resident,which is a new home owner paying taxes and taking pride in their little piece of dirt while helping to contribute to the growth of the city.

we'll see what happens. I hope the organizations involved are ethical, seeing the true needs of the refugees. Transparency is important. They can't just latch onto a gimmick. these are real people fleeing a truly terrible situation.
I'm not listening to local talk radio about this issue. it's going to be ugly and racially toxic.

That's the appearance but the details are rich.

For example there are jobs going begging due in part to not enough people skilled to fill them. I don't think 'no one' is looking for work. Having worked in career tech areas, it's been my experience that certain skills don't always meet highly specialized technical requirements. Due in part to to the ever-increasing move of technology.

Case in point: education and training. Not only must you [especially since COVID-19] revise and apply a battery of technological skills to transfer the information, but you must re-double the assessment. Assessment that ensures that skills are learned and will be useful in the changing job set. If you're on the trainee end you hope you your trainer has true knowledge and the skill to convey such. The hyper-technology replacing traditional jobs pre-COVID is absolutely not going away. You adapted, or perished if you did not get on board. Some have not.

Couple that the with some of the progressive ideologies going on in some educational circles that certain groups 'no longer' need to learn, compete, and acquire technology. Said technologies deemed as the oppressive holdings of other groups. Where does that leave those already harnessed with gaps in academic and technical achievement? Where will they work? Wake up folks! See the truth. Knowledge is power.

Let no one tell you what they think you don't need to know, skills-wise.

I'd like as many Afghans here as possible. Immigrants are the life blood of cities and this country in general. They will easily be able to find service jobs.

They have a double and triple vetting process,it’s got to be the most scrutinized group of immigrants in history.

Most are university educated,doubt they will be looking for service jobs.

But then again I know many from South America that were petro engineers,doctors,surgeons,lawyers,reporters etc that are now waiting tables and cleaning timeshares.

They are actually pretty happy because they make more then they did in their country.

I didn't say ALL working poor are lazy scam artists. But there were quite a few that took advantage of the system, as well as people that didn't need to. I mean it's pretty obvious....

Their differences are more political then religious,but to each their own and everybody pretty much wants a better future for themselves and their children,if they move there they will have a choice and they will make that choice based on where they feel the most comfortable.

If a couple are radicalized it really does not matter in the bigger picture,it’s not like we do not have radical people running around in major cities already,gangs and such.

I have many friend [[Lebanese Chaldeans, Iraqi, etc) in Dearborn, whom I visit often and I've often asked about the Arab melting pot of the Dearborn area.

Yes some of the mosques get a broken window now and again, but the different separate ethnic groups are intermixed and few if any problems show up in the local media.

Dearborn/Dearborn Heights are 2 very safe and stable communities that are much improved since the large scale diaspora of ethnic Arabs into the area.

And for people that live here... we don't need Google to become informed. :p

Well it is good to see that you actually went out door to door and got a accurate account based on a few friends,it is nice to see somebody that dedicated.

You are a better person then me because,even though I live in a highly Hispanic state and city and have lots of acquaintances that are Hispanic,even they cannot tell me how many Cubans there are verses Argentines verses Columbians verses Purto ricians,verses well you get the jist of it.

I know one Chaldean family who bought out the Mr. C's party store chain here on the east side, a Lebanese friend who owns his own bar, and a Pakistani couple who own 3 7-Eleven franchises. We are the land of opportunity... and immigrants seem to take advantage of that opportunity... which enriches our country.

Do you think it will be mostly men? Women [especially those with children] are especially targeted, and vulnerable.

They are less likely and physically able to get out as easily as young men for example. The [few] testimonies of the women able to speak is very sad. Left behind, they now have no rights; are targets for beatings, rape and enslavement.

I'm not as optimistic about getting the cream of the crop. For every professional, there are car drivers, cafeteria workers, and what about every Afghan soldier who were our allies? I just read about a higher level translator who was receiving death threats and left without his family in 2014. He now says that 13 of his relatives are under threat and wants to bring them all over if they can make it across the Pakistan border. Even if they are all somehow related to him and under threat, they probably will dilute the average professional status. While I support helping those who risked their lives to help the U.S. and their families, the numbers coming in suggest there is another agenda.

Also, we are under constraints as to how many 'refugees' we can bring in annually. Three months ago, Biden raise the annual number of refugees from all countries to 165,000/year. We evacuated 122,000 people including 6,000 Americans and an undisclosed number of foreigners or Afghans headed elsewhere. Originally, there were supposed to be a total of 21,000-30,000 interpreters, others and their families who helped us and their families and 10-15,000 Americans we were going to bring back. It looks like Biden will violate his own edict.

Also, if Sweden is an indication, Afghan immigrants who arrived before the refugee surge in 2015 had an unemployment rate of 40% in 2014. Maybe Detroit will do better and be able to employ a higher percentage.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm guessing the current percentage of recent immigrants in the US and working jobs is much higher than the blue blood "fellow Americans" that are working jobs and not on state, federal or combined government help.

Per the 'success' of this hurried withdrawal; removing our military first, and the real-time rush to save Afgan's it remains questionable how much actual vetting has occurred. If any.

I don't find it unreasonable to be concerned as we extend help to those needing our rescue [particularly others also gaining entry to the US].

Interesting that California receives 2500,one would think that would be the last place one would pick considering the enormous cost to get on ones feet there.

They are saying that the desired locations that get first priority choice are ones that already have family established in the region.

I wonder when Michigan will start to receive more asylum seekers etc. from the Texas border as the no longer deniable numbers continue to expand [as our borders remain re-opened during a pandemic]?

Bring the Afghans here. To be honest, my biggest complaint is that we are not getting more.

There are so many businesses/restaurants/etc. here that are desperate for workers, and many of those jobs are not the kind that require formal training. If these people want to build a new life here, and are willing to work the minimum wage jobs and get their feet on the ground, then it is a win all around as far as I am concerned.

Bring them here, get them hooked up with a job, and let these people start a better life. Oh, and send even more… we can use all the help we can get.

It will be interesting to see how Detroit handles this. Biden owns the Haitian issue full-out [10K+ thru the Mexican border] per his comments that he would not send them back - but then again [update]:

When you look at the Afghans and now Haitians,they are self sufficient by nature because they come from eras that have no jobs,so they have to create their own.

What amazes me is they do take the jobs washing dishes 18 hours a day for little pay and still are able to squirrel enough away in order to start some kind of business,they face the same challenges that we as citizens do while working those types of jobs,but yet they still manage to progress out of them.

When we talk about immigrants to Detroit,yea that is a good example,somebody that is willing to fill an immediate need while not being a burden on the local taxpayers,that also will move up in the future and become employers themselves,it tackles both short term and long term needs in one swoop.

The states that are receiving a larger amount,are doing so because their representatives went to the feds and requested it,a lot if it has to do with family support in a given location but when you start dealing with 60 to 100,000 they all do not have that much family in country already.

There are people who claim educated and there are people who have received an education who continue to expand their knowledge base and understand it is a continuation of the learning process.

People do not hate Islam,by that analogy Muslims hate each other,which they do because they have been hating on each other for hundreds of years.

I couldn't agree more with all of the above.

Correction: I previously wrote that Pres. Biden had set the annual limit of refugees from all countries to 125,000/year. That was wrong. For this year, Biden's executive edict of May 3rd. only allows in 62,500 refugees/year. He hopes to increase that number to 125,000/year next year. Trump's refugee total had been 15,000/year; the number of Haitian refugees now living under a bridge where there was no wall.

We were originally told that there were 10-15,000 Americans in Afghanistan. We removed 5,400 American civilians [[Wash. Post number) and were then told that 98% of Americans were out.

We were originally told that there were 21-30,000 Afghanis that were to be removed including translators and their families. The airlift brought back 122,000 people including 5,400 Americans civilians and up to 7,500 troops including the 5,000 Biden temorarily added to help with the evacuation. Subtracting the Americans, that leaves 108,100 other evacuees.

We were told that the 122,000 evacuees also include third country evacuees. We were never, to my knowledge, told the number of third nation evacuees. Without knowing that number, it is impossible to determine how many Afghanis refugees were allowed in toward Biden's limit of 62,500 refugees this year. if exceeded, can we pick which executive orders to disregard too?

There doesn't seem to be a definition of 'family' either. Are we going to be bringing out dad, mom and the kids or are we going to bring out extended family members leading to extensive chain migration?

Sen. Tammi Baldwin and Representatives Kind and Pocan, [[Tammie, Moe and Curley) visited the Fort McCoy refugee center. They, "said they're confident Afghan refugees arriving at Fort McCoy are undergoing a thorough vetting process". even though "the base said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has decided to no longer provide the exact number of Afghans at each reception center."

Again, this lack of transparency makes it harder to determine how many refugees have come and gone. Fort McCoy has had some refugee Covid cases and even a case of measles. Nothing to worry about we are told although Afghani refugees are not required to take Covid vaccines and are in cramped conditions.

White House press Secretary also said,when asked,what about testing the other illegal immigrants coming across the border?

Her reply was,they are just visiting so no need to test.

The Haitians qualify under TPS,Temporary Protected Status just like everybody else.

There seems to be a lot of picking and choosing going on with no set standards.

A child sent over the border on their own,receives their US documentation and can immediately apply for parents entry and green card who then can apply for direct family members.

A baby born in a US hospital is considered a automatic US citizen,who can then immediately apply for residency and citizenship for its parents,before it’s second bottle.

Thats why you see so many unaccompanied children being pushed over the border.

Most Afghans that worked with us have a paper trail that we already had on file,so they were pretty much already vetted.

The problem was,because of the immediate chaos at the airport,the crowds were basically just shoved onto an aircraft without checking their credentials first.

So they are not vetting the ones that they already had a file on,because they were already cleared,they are vetting the ones who were not cleared and just jumped on to the planes.

They flew them to military bases around the world in order to complete the vetting process before the finial destination.

I understand bringing them to the bases for the security aspect of a controlled guarded situation,until they can figure it out but the risk factor is in having just one understand the base operations and security levels for future reference.

What they are trying to avoid is the media headlines saying.

You just shoved 100,000 people onto planes where ISIS could have easily imbedded themselves and brought them into this country.

In the past,once vetted they automatically get dispersed to the different cities,the military base stop over is so if ISIS did get imbedded they can do the damage control.

We were the commanding force over there,our allies,private contractors who are not included in the count,CIA operations etc. were all flown out under their entities.

They did not take any Afghans with them,they were pissed off because they were not given notice and they were there under our shield of protection,like the UK,they did not want to be the last man standing on the tarmac so they had to scramble to get out before we did.

60% of our forces that were over there were DOD funded private contractors,private army,they were flown out by their corporate planes because they are not considered troops,when you watch the planes taking off from that airport in the videos,the all white ones with no markings,CIA and private contractor 747s.

They did not bring any Afghans out with them either.

The number was 15,000 Americans there,not including private contractors etc. or more because they were not required to register with the embassy there but they do not know.

The one that does know,would be the state department because they would have had to have the finial say before you could get permission to fly over there in the first place.

They know but do not want to say,wonder why?

The US sent 8000 troops over there,7000 of the 82nd airborne were sitting in Kuwait to be used as a back up in case the Taliban took Kabul,they already knew what was coming and prepared for it 2nd week in August,but left less then 650 troops at the Kabul airport for the evac.

The troops on the ground at the airport,knew they had a 50/50 chance of getting out of there alive.

Taliban was smart when they took control of Kabul,they cut off major highways and lines of communication and the flow of supplies into the city.

We were not taken by surprise at the speed that it fell or we have some of the dumbest generals in the world while the Taliban outsmarted the US military while pulling the most common way of conquering a city for the last 1000 years.

We took an risk assessment and determined what a acceptable lose of life was going to be and ran with it.

We made a big effort to get refugees out but getting evacuees, whoever they are, was never cited as a goal. One technical definition between the two groups is that evacuees, a rare category we are told, are not provided with as much federal assistance.

The above article mentioned had to do with the Camp McCoy reception center in Wisconsin. I found another local article about the Camp Atterbury reception center in Indiana. Skimming past unsubstantiated claims by National Guardsmen about incidents that were going on there, Rep. Victoria Spartz said “Over 66-hundred people, only 25 had actual documents,”“Only half of them had some kind of status in trying to apply [[for asylum or legal immigration to the US.)" She added that around 200 women at Atterbury are pregnant.

Camp McCoy just reported a couple of arrests made of assault and sexual acts with a child but did not specify that the two arrestees were refugees or evacuees. My suggestion to Detroit and other places accepting refugees is to insist on only taking in actual refugees and their families.

If all you can see is agendas,then you need to look within.

This site like many others give you options,you can and are more then welcome to use the block poster option.

It is explained in the forum help section.

The other option is to simply scroll on by my posts and not read them if they trigger you so much.

Nobody is forcing you to read them.

How exactly are you contributing to the forum when you choose to create a distraction by commenting on the poster verses the content,you could very well be a part of the problem that you do not like.
