LONDON, England [[CNN) -- God did not create the universe, world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book that aims to banish a divine creator from physics.
Hawking says in his book "The Grand Design" that, given the existence of gravity, "the universe can and will create itself from nothing," according to an excerpt published Thursday in The Times of London.
The world you see is an illusion of a world. God did not create it, for what He creates must be eternal as Himself. Yet there is nothing in the world you see that will endure forever. Some things will last in time a little while longer than others [e.g., the greater cosmos, as we shall see below in a passage from the text). But the time will come when all things visible will have an end [[C-4. 1). A Course In Miracles :)
Have we finally transcended theology?

"In The Grand Design we explain why, according to quantum theory, the cosmos does not have just a single existence, or history, but rather that every possible history of the universe exists simultaneously. We question the conventional concept of reality, posing instead a “model-dependent” theory of reality. We discuss how the laws of our particular universe are extraordinarily finely tuned so as to allow for our existence, and show why quantum theory predicts the multiverse–the idea that ours is just one of many universes that appeared spontaneously out of nothing, each with different laws of nature. And we assess M-Theory, an explanation of the laws governing the multiverse, and the only viable candidate for a complete “theory of everything.” As we promise in our opening chapter, unlike the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life given in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the answer we provide in The Grand Design is not, simply, “42.”
“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing, It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.”

A crash course in cosmology and the absence of need for a god...
The link below is to a lecture by cosmologist Lawrence Krauss which will give the lay person an understandable summary of what we now know about the origin and nature of the universe and how we know it. Krauss is the best communicator I've heard on the subject, and he's funny to boot. IMHO, this is the best investment of 54 minutes of your time you will ever make.

I thought it was obvious...

The Hawking quote that you asked for appears in his latest book "The Grand Design" which I quoted since everyone here doesn't have a copy.
Confusing beliefs with knowledge

what we now believe
why we believe it.
We don't KNOW anything. We only think we do.
Meddle, you may know nothing and think that belief is an adequate substitute, but I'm not confused by the distinction. Knowledge is supported by substantial evidence. Beliefs, especially religious beliefs, require none.
Introducing Her Fertile Fuzziness!!!
no, creationism is NOT a theory
I stand corrected. Let's just call it a "claim."
Sorry. God is female. My wife told me so.
So is mine! :D I'm a faithful follower of the loving lapine, the randy rabbit, the fuzzy, fertile, fornicating ESTRUS BUNNY!!! [[Praise her name!). Unlike all those other cold, prickly, punitive gods , the boisterous buxom bunny communes with her followers via the splendid sexual sacrament and the orgastic orgy on the vernal equinox. You should give her a try!
Fundamental forces of nature...
I see that Maxx has been doing an admirable job of trying to educate the superstitious in my absence.

Along with the strong and weak nuclear forces and electromagnetism, gravity is one of the four fundamental forces of nature. Although scientists are still trying to understand how the interact with subatomic particles, their existence is beyond doubt by knowledgeable people. While they all apparently came into existence at the big bang, they were not "created" in the theological sense. The standard assumption at this point is that they were all one force at the big bang.
Science is constantly correcting itself based on experiments and new evidence. Theology doesn't even try to reality test its dogmas since it claims to already have the ultimate truth. Any kind of reality testing would quickly expose theology to be equal parts wishful thinking and self-delusion.
