LOVE that video and early Alice in general [[thru Muscle of Love). That original lineup was great. It's about time they got inducted. Lets see, it is the 'Rock and Roll' hall of fame, isn't it? And they inducted Madonna and Grandmaster Flash [[or whatever that name is) before Alice Cooper? Seems just a bit odd to me. Should those two also be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame? They have as much to do with country as they do with rock and roll [[in my opinion). Anyway, good to see Alice get his due finally. Might have to break out my Killer album later on tonight and lsiten to some Halo of Flies!
Oh there is certainly politics involved with the selection committee . Leon was inducted as a '' sideman '' not performer ....... what !!!!!! Sure he backed up some bands Maddogs & Englishman , Beatles , etc . but had a great solo career as well . Article from the Detroit News yesterday

Gannon, did you finish playing all your records? I was interested in finding out if you had any that I actually like. :) Speaking of people that are MIA- whatever happened to that cranky guy who liked Van Morrison? While we wait for their return, more country music:

Beethoven's Fifth, believe it or not. All four movements. Unfortunately, it was a rather poor recording, but nothing really can dim Ludwig's genius.

Lyrics:
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.
A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
Chorus:
Oh, put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin’ it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
Don’t say "it ain’t so", you know the time is now.
Chorus
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all - a moment in the sun;
[[pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
Chorus

Yeah!

Always loved Lady Jane, one of my favorites by the Stones. Great guitar picking, love that intro. While the Beggars banquet-to-Exile era was proabably them at their best, I still love the older stuff too. Songs like Heart of Stone, I'm Free, It's All Over Now, etc, still sound great after all these years. I was listening to the 12x5 album when I was four years old!
Yes the early stuff was great and evolved much like the Beatles did . Playing the dulcimer was the late Brian Jones .

Another great one. Pretty irritating how all the other band members can't be seen during the song! The Animals went through more lineup changes than just about anyone. By this time they were basically a different band - the only original member was Eric Burdon [[I think). Andy Summers [[The Police) was in the band for a short time. They managed to put out good music through all the changes.
I think Eric Burdon just did or will do a gig at one of the Adiamo's . Here's another oldie [[1965) check out a 24 yr. old David Crosby [[dark shirt) . My hips hurt just watching those go-go dancers lol

Note that post-production video editing is itself a form of stenciling—masking the failures reveals the successes.

Wow... who would have thought that the group I was listening to back in January that none of you had ever heard of.... would today be the #1 in album sales in the USA....
That would be the "classic crossover" group known as IL VOLO... 3 young tenors [[16,16 and 17) from Italy who have voices like 45 year old classical stars...
They stormed into America this week as their album went on sale... on American Idol on Thursday [[and on Jay Leno on Friday). On Idol... they were the ones that overwhelmed the audience [[and remaining idol stars... their stunned expressions are priceless).... and were given a standing ovation...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbZvz0pXV48
Most of the hundreds of thousands of hits went to other versions of their songs..... [[not this Idol version).
IL VOLO said that they wanted to conquer America with their classic songs... especially American youth. I think that they might actually suceed... in all age group categories...
This week their CD became the #1 seller... pushing Lady Gaga out of first place in Amazon.com CD sales!! :p
But are they cuter than the Jonas Brothers? Not really my type of sound, but at least they don't use autotune.Quote:
IL VOLO said that they wanted to conquer America with their classic songs... especially American youth. I think that they might actually suceed...
"In a Persian Market", by the DSO. Doesn't anyone here care for the classics?
My twelve year old is trying to soften me up for downloading a copy of Grand Theft Auto by using his mom's credit card numbers. Some of the optional soundtrack on GTA is of classical [[mainly operatic arias).The soundtrack is to a game where the player steals cars, trucks, and other vehicles and sometimes beats the crap out of them. Howdya like that Ray1936?Quote:
See dad how good this game is???
Well, ya gotta take the good with the bad. Anything that exposes young 'uns to fine music is okay with me.
Beautiful music is everything from Beethoven and Vivaldi to the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkle, with a nod also to C&W. But this Rap and heavy metal is NOT music.
Pam, I never would have guessed that "classic crossover" [[the genre that Celine Dion, Josh Groban, IL DIVO and Andrea Bocelli sing) would one day be popular with American teens... it never has before... and as for the Jonas Brothers.... here's some comments I've culled from the Youtube videos on IL VOLO.... [[still #1 selling CD in America as of last week on American Idol)....
- "I think they will become popular with the younger people cause im 14 and i only heard of them 3 days ago and im already in love with thier music. which is kinda strange for me cause i like punk and rock.....and punk rock...lol."
- "I think it says a lot when USA has people like justin bieber hanna montana and lil wayne who are ridiculously overrated and then meanwhile Europe is being conquered by these teens. i mean THIS is what Singing is!"
- "I don't know who was responsible for bringing these wonderful European, young talents to this show but it clearly put the American Idol voices to shame. You could see it in the eyes of those who watched. Italian voices... You can't even come close."
- "Pretty sad when we present Nicole S and 50cents as our American talent[[?) and then these amazing men come on and show what real music should be. They arent auto tuned-no naked dancers-no nasty or sugestive lyrics just beautiful talent. Bravo Il Volo."
- "HAHA they definlately took america by storm. it's a little sad that this is what's going on in italy, these good looking boys with voices from the gods, and we have miley cyrus, rihanna, and other overrated losers who can't even sing. it's so sad."
- "Gawd they are so freaking awesome! I love them! I'd hate to be one of the Jonas Brothers right now 'cause damn, they got taken to the cleaners in the triple threat category [[by this I mean ALL three talented singers, looking cute, and having style!)"
I think Josh Groban has some younger fans, because he does have the cute factor. I think Celine had teen fans during the Titanic craze. But, I think what we all want to know is-will Ray 1936 like Il Volo? :)Quote:

Speaking of Josh Groban...I enjoyed this performance by him:

LOL... maybe we should have Ray1936, The Rock, and Old Guy check them out....:)
I like Josh... but he's needs to do something with that hair.....
Got it, Pam.
Actually, I'm not happy with myself that I'm.......well, I'm what some would call a musical snob, because I don't like ALL music. There must be something in rock and heavy metal and rap because it's so popular, but I just find it all quite grating.
I'm the one that's poorer for that view, but it's me. Can't help it. Took piano lessons from age five and flute starting at seven. Mackenzie HS Band and Orchestra and WSU band. Give me a Sousa or a Vivaldi [[some spread!) and I'm in pure heaven. It's my background.
But give me Snoop Doggie Dog and I may upchuck.
Saving redeeming quality? I do like C&W. Oh. And Mexicana is just fine with me. Love those bass guitars!!!
I doubt there is really anyone who likes all music so don't feel bad. Here's one for you-a country song done Mexican style.

I wasn't exposed to classical music or instruments growing up , so I guess in a sense that is my misfortune . There is a few genre's I don't care for as well , but if it makes people happy , its all good .

The Trans Siberian Orchestra is very popular with all age groups. Besides their Christmas music, which a lot of people are aware of, they have taken many classical pieces, put them in rock music format and put them together in a rock opera with lengthy stories built around the music. Check out Beethovan's Last Night and/or Night Castle music on YouTube and you will see what I mean, although there is nothing like being there and listening to the entire story. Their concerts are attended by every age group and their shows are fantastic!

I'm rediscovering Joe Sample's brilliance on this fine, lazy Sunday morning. Just went through two of his albums that I recorded onto cassette back in 1990...my honey had never heard of him. We just spent over two hours watching the sunrise blend into what promises to be another beautiful day.
Cheers!

Exploration #6 - London Pirate RadioIt's an interesting behind-the-scenes documentary about clandestine radio operators. There's a bit of urban exploration involved. At one point they blindfold the commentator while driving him to their secret studio. I wonder if he thought to bring along a GPS? ;)Quote:
Pirate radio is everywhere in London, born in the 60’s from rusting anti-aircraft towers in the mouth of the Thames. Today’s broadcasts are hidden in plain sight, transmitting from secret tower block studios via homemade rooftop antennas. We put our boots on and went exploring.

Many times over the years. You can only listen to the older stuff so much, and I haven't been discovering much newer stuff at all in recent years. My tastes aren't all that diverse, mostly the stuff I like tends towards rock, blues-rock or folk. Was at a party last weekend, the guy was playing the Black Keys station on some satellite deal, heard some great stuff that I wasn't familiar with, but don't know who the artists were.

The Chain
I'm listening to the rising and falling crescendo of cicadas. I love the sound. It is what shimmering heat and heavy green trees sound like on a quiet, humid afternoon; sort of like the fragrance of lilacs for the ears. It is, nevertheless, a bittersweet song, as it heralds, for me, that the summer is in its downward half. Sigh.

That makes the third time that term came up in conversation since last weekend. Curious.

This is funny.
I settled into my easy chair last night to watch a Mozart festival concert on PBS. The first selection was the Overture to "The Marriage of Figaro".
As the wonderful orchestra began playing, for the life of me, all I could see was Philadelphia, Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd, and the opening scenes of "Trading Places".

Streaming it live from here http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/. It can be heard on CBC2 Windsor too, but this lets me sit with the laptop on the deck with the a headset. If I miss part of it. I can stream it from the Mountain and Pacific zones later.
Laith Al-Saadi. Saw him today at the Dearborn Homecoming Festival and was blown away.
While I have plenty of music, I've lost interest in it over the past 10 years in favor of some type of talk radio. But I have not lost my interest in the musical interest of people.
I've just listened to a NPR show that profiled the IPod playlists of combat soldiers in the Middle East right now. These are what you carry into combat with you along with grenades,M-16's, armour, and water. How different the ways and means of having music with you over the past 150 years of warfare.
For me, it was an mono portable 8-track player and Foghat. For my dad, almost nothing except for German propaganda radio, for my grandfather, maybe a Victrola, for my G-Grandfather, a harmonica and mouth harp.
Now, a complete 1000 song playlist and photos in the size of a pack of gum.
Gospel, C&W, Heavy Metal, Rap, and Folk all march into combat zones at the same time.
