It's simple, black people are moving out of Detroit at a higher rate than white people.
I think when the real numbers come out in December that there's gonna be a whole lot of stunned people around here.
Place your bets before the wheel stops ...
Detroit sees rise in white residents after 60 years
A stunning demographic reversal is taking shape in Detroit.
After six decades of white flight, the percentage of white Detroiters has shot up dramatically, according to a new census survey released Tuesday.
The survey, more estimate than precise numbers, shows that the percentage of white, non-Hispanic Detroiters rose from 8.4% of the city's population in 2008 to 13.3% last year.
Much of the rise can be pegged to younger white people -- along with some empty nesters -- moving to the city, even as African Americans continue to leave for the suburbs.
"What we're seeing is a move back to the city by a younger population that sees the city as cool," said Kurt Metzger, director of Data Driven Detroit.
More white residents moving in or fewer white residents moving out?
What, where is the your source for this evidence? White folks moving back to Detroit. If you provide me more factual data, I'll believe you.
Which makes me think. How white is the Detroityes forum anyway?
I'm white. [[Dead giveaway with that name....)
Plenty of knowledgeable people are starting to say that if the Census reports 800,000 people in Detroit it will only be because a whole lot of fudging went on.
The reporting of the 2009 American Community Survey population numbers for Detroit was nonsense. The statistical problems with the Detroit numbers are so severe that the numbers have been rendered worthless. http://www.detnews.com/article/20100...--Census-shows Most of the problems stem from completely unreliable estimates for the total Detroit population.
The percentage of white residents in Detroit may indeed have risen from 2008 to 2009. But a 5 percentage point increase in one year is simply impossible and should have been reported as such by any news organization. If this increase were even close to accurate, that would mean that under any Detroit population estimate tens of thousands of white folks moved to Detroit in 2009. That didn't happen. A little simple math provides all the proof necessary.
Take a conservative 2008 population estimate for Detroit of 800,000. If 8% were white, that gives us 64,000 white folks. Now assume for the sake of argument that 5% of Detroiters left the city in the next year. That leaves 760,000 people. Assume that 100% of the departing folks were black. If 13% of the 2009 population where white, that would mean that 98,800 white people resided in Detroit in 2009. In other words, something like 35,000 white folks moved to Detroit in one year. Hmmm, what are the chances that that actually happened, especially during the 2009 depression economy?
If one assumes that Detroit's population is higher than 800,000, the 35,000 figure would have to be larger. The same if one assumes [[probably true) that less than 5% of Detroiters moved out in 2009, or that at least some white folks moved out in that year as well [[certainly true).
The ACS numbers are completely flawed. They should have been fixed or not even published.
You may be correct that the numbers are off, but the postive effect of reporting that Detroit's white population has risen [[because indeed it likely has) helps break down the mental barrier that white people can't live in Detroit.
Detroit needs people, white, black, and otherwise. Right now, whites are underrepresented and if thinking that more white people are moving to Detroit causes other white people to move to Detroit, then that is fine by me. And, basic observation will tell you that white people are in fact moving to Detroit, and that trend will likely continue, despite however "off" the ACS number may be.
It must be ok if they did it..... = )
I heard Bing say preliminary Census data was better than some estimates - he said something like "I'd guess we going to be a bit below 900k" at one of the community forums.
Welcome, all new residents! Join me in being a part of Detroit's resurgence! At the very least, let's keep our heads above water. Opportunities abound, and there's a lot to be optimistic about. In spite of all the negativity.
Well, they did just lose three black residents when my family moved last month. :)
But I'd also agree that the numbers also reflect the number of blacks leaving the city and thusly altering the percentages.
Maybe the precentage of the whites in Detroit increased when the precentage of blacks decreased. That's the source.
I heard that Granholm will become President of WSU, transform it into one of the top research institutions in the country with an huge increase of students and massive endowment and then step down to run for Mayor of Detroit.
Just the word on the street at WSU.
Good I can't wait til Granholm runs for the first white female mayor of Detroit.
