Whaaa! Whaaa! Wow, talk about whining.
Instead of whining about the news coverage Detroit receives and is warranted, how about Detroiters come together to change the perceptions and realities of living in Detroit?
What a novel concept.
Something happened last night
I heard something happened in Chicago last night too.... :)
The article makes no mention of how the view from Windsor is much more grand than the view from Detroit?
Here it is, complete with a pic and everything

It's obvious to anyone with at least half a brain that Windsor has always been very popular to view the fireworks before and since the shooting. In fact if anything... recently tightened restrictions for cross border identity purposes likely makes visiting Windsor slightly less popular... as their casino can attest to....
In 2006 I viewed the fireworks from the Canadian side and there were a few boos, when the plane with the American flag attached flew by...other than an adolescent confrontation, I didnt see any real violence..a little drunken sarcasm and bafoonery, but overall a very nice vibe and mood......
Could someone please explain about the trigger happy cop? I have no agenda, but would just like to hear about it.
We heard eye-witness accounts at the Beaubien Street Saloon later that night that a young black rookie cop returned fire upon the fellow shooting...she shot into the crowd, according to what we heard. It was ONLY hearsay, but I could not imagine eye-witnesses that same evening making this story up.
It jibes with the first car I saw pass twenty feet in front of me while sitting under the pedestrian walkway between the Millender Center and RenCen...I saw one car with nothing but three cops in it drive out first, one of them a young black woman.
The second or third car sped by with its back door open, as if they had someone lying in the back seat with their legs hanging out...it WAS chaos, since many people were running down Jefferson away from Hart Plaza. But the number of cars didn't equal the number of folks reported shot, so I guess that at least a few had to wait for ambulances to get through...but I do not remember seeing anything but cop cars driving by me on the grassy berm.
It all happened very quickly, but later on we heard about a two to three-hundred person riot at the corner of Congress or Larned and Woodward as well. I remember that since it would've been right below the windows at the CAY, and joked that Kwame would've had the best view for that fight.
We heard NOTHING of the sort about the gunshots, and almost NOTHING about the riot from the news media...only the search for the shooter. The Detroit News had a little blurb about the riot the next day. There was never any reports of the caliber of bullets in those who were shot, it seemed to have been silenced. I have no reason to doubt that there was return fire...but since it was never reported, I have no proof.
Interesting...Thanks Gannon.
There won't be anyone[[except thugs) on the detroit side of the river for the fireworks if security doesn't get a handle on it.
I was at the corner of Beaubien and Atwater. There were several incidents I observed. Just after 9pm there was a stampede of people running from St Antoine toward Beaubien moments later a large contingent of police, security and an EMS went the other way. An area between Atwater and the river was cordoned off by temporary fencing. Some youths bowled over the fence and then there was a mass of humanity that entered the previously restricted area. [[Admittedly the space was underutilized). After a few minutes, the fencing was re-erected. I observed very large gangs [[50 or more) of youths parading through the crowd.
On one occasion a small force of police intercepted the menacing group. Upon seeing the police the group ran the other way ,some blended into the crowd. About 10 minutes into the show there was a fight at the corner of Beaubien and Atwater.
The melee lasted for a minute or so before it broke up.
Undoubtedly , any families that were in the middle of any of that mess will NOT be coming back next year.
I felt as the attendance was less that last year and has been declining every year since the 2004 shooting.
Argh! I'm avoiding throngs of folks milling around waiting, and acting out... The stampede factor is real and should be minimized.
Yeah, these FREE or should I say "free-for-all" events tend towards this sorta "wilding" and I am tending to stay away from larger events like this. At some smaller cultural festivals and events there are vendors and segmented activities that tend to be safer...
As at least a percentage of the folk are their for a certain amount of commerce; in addition to enjoyment of the free events.
I was in the same area and saw the same things. There were about 3-4 families I saw get up and leave once the crowds started breaking through the fence.
There were simply not enough police and in a large rowdy crowded situation that is un-nerving. Just before the fireworks started and when the crowds were at the heaviest the police went inside the WinterGarden and stood inside behind the glass where they couldn’t possibly do anything if something bad would have happened. The reality was that nothing really happened. The potential was there but nothing came of it. I saw about 100-200 people sneak into the gated area but once inside those people [[mostly teens) didn’t do anything. The perception was much worse than the reality.
