The issue the players have is the way the owners have handled negotiations recently. Firstly, they were willing to cancel an entire season to put a hard salary cap in place. They got what they wanted and were willing to give away 57% of revenue to get it. Just prior to this contract expiring, some owners signed players to huge long-term [[10 yrs. +) contracts in order to circumvent their own cap. Now they say they had no idea league revenues would grow so fast and they want to lower the revenue split to 50-50. The players have agreed but want the owners to honor these recent long-term deals they offered. The owners say no way they can afford it. I do not favor either side but I know who is not negotiating in good faith.
My answer to all of this is a fan cap. I refuse to pay more than 40 bucks a ticket for any event - baseball, basketball or hockey. It's the amount I think is fair for 2-3 hours of live sports entertainment. I will pay an extra 20 bucks for a football game but that's because they only have 8 home games a year.
