DETROIT [[FOX 2) - Renaissance Center security officers accused of racism and assault were removed from their positions and are under investigation following FOX 2's report that shined light on years of abuse.
Sad. Those security details guilty of these aggressive ways of handling visitors should had been reprimanded. On the other hand there had been a waive of incidents occurring around and inside the RenCen over that past 20 years. Who remembers the gang wars that occurred in the Riverfront near or just outside of the RenCen around 15 years ago or so? The Riverwalk was forced to shutdown after 7pm due to those incidents and other outbreaks of violence. I visited the RenCen during the pandemic. I rule was passed down from state capital in April of 2020 that masks should be worn when entering any public places, offices, including hotels. Security in the RenCen was strict on visitors wearing masks when entering the property during that time. The young man should had comply or if he left his mask inside just ask if he could get a mask from one of the staff. Also during this time there were riots occurring across the country initiated by Black Live Matter or rogue groups using that slogan while rioting. Yes the apprehending of this young man was excessive. His behavior was excessive as well and he have to take responsibility for his actions. Undesirables could be labeled to those who causes uneasiness or fear through their actions or behaviors. Not due to the color of one's skin. Undesirables are all around downtown. I was on the QLine where these two young Black men boarded. One tried flirting to two young women who appeared to be of another nationality and he cursed them for not wanting to talk to him accusing them of not liking black men. There are those who come into restaurants causing mayhem for the reasons being asked to leaving after panhandling or harassing customers. There had been an increase of Undesirable behavior occurring around downtown as downtown revives itself over the past 20 years
Nauseating. Another pay day. Not saying the security is totally innocent but these stories are so old now. If you conduct yourself in a respectful, polite manner, these type of interactions rarely escalate. The way FOX 2 spins this into a racist story is disgusting as well. Society is making it easier to be a scumbag. When anyone calls you out for your behavior just find a touchy subject to throw back at them and they will back off and you may even get a payday. Morals have and continue to be washed out if society.
They make it sound like there is no undesirable white people in society causing problems in downtowns,when that happens you never hear anything about it.
Not long ago Detroit shut down certain African American clubs and it was deemed racist because of the crowds they catered to,Detroit did not do anything different then others cities do.
We have a historical district that is clubs and restaurants etc.,they did the same thing and shut down the clubs that caused problems.
So in the last couple of years they were allowed to be re-opened,sure enough the fights and shootings increased and Halloween night 3 am people started shooting and innocent people got shot,including a 13 YO kid who because of curfew was never supposed to be there in the first place.
It has nothing to do with color of one’s skin,in order to provide some what of a safe environment for everybody sometimes things have to be heavy handed and sometimes people get caught up in it.
There is a certain amount of steps required in being pro active and yes that involves being pro-active and trying to prevent problems before they start.
A good trained bouncer of a club will recognize a problem before it starts and deal with it before it gets out of hand.
Something has to happen in a chain of events in order for security to draw attention to you in the first place,they are looking for red flags and when you see them the only way to approach them is heavy handed,it’s actually on the person being approached to de-escalate because the reaction they receive is based on the reaction they put forward.
Acting like you are on the streets with other private individuals is different then when you encounter the police or somebody in a position who’s job is to prevent people from acting like they are on the streets in places where you should have respect for everybody else around you.
Look at how many malls across the country that were destroyed because security was accused of being heavy handed with the “element” that caused the problems in the first place.
I don't blame anyone taking a tough stance against disorderly people these days. I've long held that Detroit has been able to avoid the kinds of rampant crime you see in California and other cities around the US because we don't allow criminals to take up the victimhood mentality.
From a layman's point of view, it looks like the takedown was unwarranted, but the patron was clearly screaming and getting in security's face, just looking to stat an altercation. He got exactly what he was asking for.
The one sided reporting is typical of media today, yet still sickening. The music alone sounds better suited to a slasher flick than a news report.
You start punishing those who uphold societies laws and rules, while giving windfall paydays to those who break said laws and rules, and society will inevitably crumble.
Back when GM had its own security guards instead of half baked contracted or joint venture ones, things were more professional and I don't think this would have happened if they had kept their own security staff.

You also have to remember that the takedown incident with the young man whom stayed at the hotel occurred during the height of the pandemic. Everyone was told to practice social distancing. Even law enforcement would pull motorists over and have motorists just to show their credentials without taking them back to the squad cars. This young man invaded their space during this time so taking him down was needed.Quote:
