We see renderings all the time, who are they attempting to appease,
zoning officials, investors, public opinion ?
How often is reality quite a bit different than those sketches
and who calls them out on the bloody lack of authenticity ?
That image synthesis of generating photo realism doesn't exactly cut the mustard when reality hits us in the face.

The renderings are not being created for you. If you don't look at them, you won't be disappointed.
These buildings that keep appearing. Who are they attempting to appease?
These businesses that keep opening. Who are they attempting to appease?
Sometimes, but rarely, are the actual buildings better than the early renderings. Thank god City Modern dumped the original design of the units that later became the Carriage Homes
I've been to "meetings" where developers attempt to sell
a whole lot of dreams and ambition mixed with ego
UNTIL someone actually makes a comment based on reality.
That's when the crystal ceiling shatters and the sledgehammers come out
Reality, the facts, parameters, constraints, actual stuff that matters.
People that live near "stuff" that gets built -- have to put up with it.
Many years ago, I went to a public hearing for a project. Might have been Citizen's District Council, Planning Commission, City Council, or BZA. Don't really remember. Anyway, someone pointed out something on the drawings that didn't seem to make any sense. I commented that the drawings were preliminary representations, and the project probably wouldn't really be constructed that way. Well, I was wrong, and the project stands today with this inexplcable 'design feature.
And now I know, that is how the process works.
All too often - the funding/investors don't come through -
and the project is ""modified", "changed", "revised" from the original.
We don't necessarily get new renderings [[they're out of money remember) and what we had perceived via the media hype, is not what happens in reality.
This occurs with architects like John Portman on down to ordinary everyday people working in the industry.
Renderings seem to be "pie in the sky" wishes of what it might be

It's the rough draft of history....wait that's journalism.
Really it's a rough draft of what to possibly expect and it can be modified because likely nothing has broken ground yet. It's nice to see where public opinion stands on projects when renderings are revealed.
I seriously question what significant projects [[and I mean that in the project management sense of the term) the bomb-throwers have accomplished.
There are those who do and those who don't. Please don't be so damn silly. It is embarrassing.
Well there is one downtown building where O3H was spot on... The Griswold... which went from attractive matching addition on top of the parking structure... to butt ugly... after a few years delay due to the 2008 recession. By far not one of The Roxbury Groups better designs.... :eek:
The vertical addition itself is attractive for Layfayette Park...not for a pseudo faux historic parking deck adjacent to a historic hotel. I presume budgets just busted the whole scheme up and we got the cheapo storefront box instead. Huge contextual fail.
The pizza pizza HQ [[already hate the metal panel duck butt lid) will be the next litmus test and Chemical Bank HQ after that. I envision the One Campus Martius expansion may present the best integrative design in this latest design era.
May be off topic but it is rather sad that some 50 percent of projects announced never come to fruition [[or thereabouts). Sometimes people troll. Who knows what's going on. I think about the high-rises designated for Capitol Park.

A lot of it is a visual in the first step in obtaining funding and support,some can invision a completed project in their heads while others need a visual aid.
Changes may be made because of funding levels were not obtained to complete the project as modeled or what looks good on paper does not always equate to realistic construction methods.
Architects are like engineers,they are good at designing things that look good on paper but realistically no way in the world they can actually be built.
The one Gistok posted of the Griswold looks like they dropped a 1970s motel on top of a 1920s building,akin to a Rolls Royce driving down the street with a Chevy Vega on the roof.

Sometime the bigger the project, the more pressure, the more hype.
No one should accept bad advertising, or just turn the other cheek and walk away , without a rebuttal. It needs to be called out and rebuked.

There is a whole lot more to telling The Story , a way of capturing attention.
I get it, architects have to eat, and those with creativity will push the envelope.
I lived in Pontiac around 2000 - 2005 and there were all sorts of proposals for that city to explode with NEW stuff, making it the next cool spot. Night life downtown was cranking, high tech innovative startups, a burgeoning art scene. It didn't exactly flourish, and we see the aftermath.
