Greater Downtown (Detroit) Report - The Hudson-Webber Foundation

Interesting report from The Hudson-Webber Foundation regarding the development of the "Greater Downtown" area. Their definition of Greater Downtown includes the following: Downtown, Midtown, New Center, Woodbridge, Eastern Market, Lafayette Park, Rivertown, and Corktown.

The development maps near the end of the report are interesting, particularly Midtown and Downtown. It’ll be interesting to see the same maps in 5-10 years – hopefully the development will continue.

I feel that Lafayette Park had been ignored by the city. Lafayette Park is the closet neighborhood to the downtown area that it is considered downtown. You would think that the park would had been well kept up and much better stores in the strip mall itself. Lance had done a nice job running Lafayette Foods for the past couple of years but the Attisha family had not done a good job on getting good retail in the prime strip mall. Many say that their price for rent is too high. Lance claims that no one is coming with money. It is a shame no matter what reason that the storefronts are still empty. Is the Attisha family a good landlord of the property. That Labor Ready would had been gone if the Attisha family were. The employment office scares business away from the mall. I blame the city also for no focusing on the mall and the area itself. Maybe Dugan or an EM would do a better job with Lafayette Park than the other mayors and councils we had in the past

This shows that there are two Detroits being created. Instead of being divided by race the new Detroit is divided by age, income, and education. One is young living in government subsidized developments and the other is old and can;t afford to pay their property taxes.
