Lear Corp. in talks to bring up to 5,000 jobs from Mexico to city of Detroit
"Mel Stephens, Lear's senior vice president of communications and facilities, said Wednesday that Lear has no specific site in mind or a specific timetable. The company is working with the city, automakers and the union to evaluate what can work, he said.
"Anything within the city is a possible site," Stephens said.
Stephens said it's possible that a pilot program would first bring a smaller number of jobs to Detroit, with more added later.
Lear might be able to reopen a 100,000-square-foot plant it owns in the city. Or maybe there would be options to redevelop the I-94 Industrial Park near the junction of I-94 and I-75.
Mallett said the goal is to bring 5,000 jobs here — which, he said, ultimately could benefit 20,000 people if you figure a worker might be supporting three others in the household.
