I walked around the Mall, although not a part of the event msyelf, it was far from "poorly attended." Not sure where you got that information from...
CBS News estimated that the Aug. 28th Beck rally attracted 87,000 attendees. Here's a composite photo comparing the Beck and One Nation rallies and it shows that yesterday's rally had about half the number of Beck attendees. So given all the hype and opportunities for union-paid free travel, 45,000 is a poor turnout in my estimation. Most of the attendees departed long before yesterday's program had concluded. In this video taken at 4:13 PM, even Bob King's fellow speaker admits that the response is "pretty depressing" - and for being such a prominent sponsor, I'm surprised that the UAW couldn't get their guy an earlier spot on the program agenda!
John Avlon observes over at the Daily Beast that "....this turnout was small, and suffering from an enthusiasm gap compared to the conservative populists who crowded the mall a month ago for Glenn Beck’s "Restoring Honor" Rally."
He also wrote about the wingnuts on the far-left end of the political spectrum who attended yesterday's rally."The curious migration of anti-Semitism to the left was evident in signs that read “End All U.S. Aid to the Racist State of Israel” and “Fund Jobs, Not Israel.” I cringed as these marchers crowded past a group of World War II vets from Columbus, Ohio, being wheeled to their war memorial as part of the excellent “Honor Flight” program. The crowds mostly wore union T-shirts—tie-dyes for members of SEIU/1199—while UAW members donned straight-forward navy blue shirts that said “Mobilizing for Justice.” Justice is, of course, supposed to be impartial, but in this crowd the word had ideological overtones, as protesters marched past people handing out copies of “The Workers World” and selling The Communist Manifesto next to the collected works of Malcom X."
The rally was open to all walk-ins, so it's probably unfair of him to criticize those fringe group members who attended, since they can't seem to attract any attention or crowds on their own.
