Detroit Renaissance Student to MIT

Congrats to a Justin Bullock, a Detroit Renaissance student and valedictorian, on accepting a full scholarship to MIT. I know Justin, and he is a great young man.

Detroit -- For someone who has no problem zipping through novels and textbooks, cruising around the track doesn't seem like such a stretch.
Justin Bullock is known for both. Today, he will run the half-mile, mile and two miles in the Detroit Public School League track and fieldhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif championship.
On most other days, he's leading the pack in the classroom.



And he has the numbers to prove it:
• A 4.0 grade-point average;
• All A's in four years at Detroit Renaissance. In fact, the last B he received was in the seventh grade in geography. The only other B he recalls receiving was in handwriting. [["It's still pretty bad.")
• He scored a 33 on the ACT as a junior after getting a 29 as a freshman.
• And, he has scholarships totaling nearly $2 million.

This kind of news just made a good day that much better.

How can that be? I thought Detroiters were too victimized by the socio-economic oppression of the suburbanites to possibly succeed. And how can private scholarships to a private institution possibly be of benefit when we all know that socialism is the answer? I just hope he doesn't give other children in Detroit any crazy ideas about exceeding the low expectations that their community has set for them. I bet that after he graduates, he's going to be a sellout to the evil capitalistic oppressors. He probably won't even choose to move back to the ghetto.

A student from Cass Tech also received a full ride to the University of Michigan.

Cass Tech and Renaissance students regularly are accepted and attend top tier universities. The problem is the rest of DPS. They use to have on site acceptance to U of M MSU and the Black Ivy's [[ Howard, Hampton Morehouse,Spelman) and every once in a while you will hear of the grad going to a Harvard, Columbia, MIT or Carnegie-Mellon. Unfortunately the school you most hear about for grads of other DPS schools is WCCCD.

But the narrative that Bobb is sending out is that ALL of DPS is bad. His narrative is has been fairly consistent of spotlighting, or even some case showboating the negative.

Its possible to root out the bad, replace the incompetent, eliminate waste, while still praising the schools that are doing well and succeeding. That's how you grow a district. That's how you retain and stabilize the population.

It would be interesting to hear Justin Bullock's opinion about how DPS should be improved. It would be a first-hand account from his unique perspective.

On the real, in every school located in Detroit there lies a Justin Bullock. There are good students located within the various schools throughout Detroit. The problem is they are surrounded by knuckleheads that ruins it for everyone else that is trying to get an education. The parents of Justin Bullock should be proud that their son didn't get sidetracked and threw away his education.

I don't think this tells us anything significant about the DPS, but it is terrific for this young man. MIT has an excellent, decades-old program to help minority students get acclimated to the new environment, because experience shows it can be a pretty tough transition.

Way to go, Justin. A lot of people, who don't even know you, are very proud of you and your accomplishments. Dare to hope and accomplish.

That's how Bates Academy [[love him or hate him) came about. They bussed academically successful students from all over Detroit to this school. I was in the first graduating class. I would say the majority of students in my school went on to either Cass or Renaissance.

This story reminded me of one student in my class. He was what I like to call scary smart; we all knew it. He maxed out on his SATs and received a full scholarship to Harvard for biochemistry, then on to Stanford for another grad program. He's a physician and faculty at U of M now.

Edit: He also went to Renaissance BTW.

Retroit is being sarcastic, that's all. I went through something like this with him last year. He's not racist.

I wasn't the one who derailed the thread, and it's not my job to get it back on track. However, I'm happy for Justin Bullock and I wish him well.

I respectfully disagree with this statement.

My post was pretty short, so there are only three things you could possibly be taking issue with, as there are only three things being asserted:

1) That one DPS student going to MIT doesn't tell us anything significant about DPS.
2) That MIT has an excellent program for incoming minority students.
3) That the transition to MIT from high school can be difficult.

I'm kind of curious which of these you disagree with.

Justin lives across the street from me. I was so happy for him when I saw the Det News story. Great kid, just like the others in the neighborhood.
