How many feel that the Avenue of Fashion is still not meeting it's great potential as being a major walkable shopping destination such as Ferndale, Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe, and Birmingham? The Ave is bordered by two to three middle class communities such as Sherwood Forest, Palmer Woods, and Green Acres but the many of the stores on the strip don't attract those in the surrounding communities but cater to those from elsewhere? I know that there is one or two developers who are trying to put something on the strip but I feel that there need to be more

Carnack Hires Detectives to Tail Duggan--Claims Extramarital affair Fri, 16 Nov 2018 16:12:23 GMT
Disgruntled business owner Robert Carnack, star witness in the federal government's bribery case against Detroit Councilman Gabe Leland, has gone to extreme lengths on Wednesday in an attempt to publicly shame another elected official: Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Duggan arrives at the location without his personal protection unit in view, staying on three different occasions for between one and two hours, according to the video obtained by the Free Press. The 15-minute video identifies a woman and implies Carmack's allegations of an extramarital affair, although nothing in the video provides documentation of those allegations. The Free Press also has not independently verified the accusation.

Duggan and his wife issued a lengthy statement denying the allegation and condemning. See the end of this article:

<![CDATA[How's Harper Woods These Days?]]> Fri, 16 Nov 2018 00:25:14 GMT
It's no question that Harper Woods has changed in the past 20 years. In 2000, the city was about 85% white. In 2010, whites held a slim plurality at 49%. Today, Harper Woods has a black majority with 56%, though there is still a significant White minority at about 38-40%. Beyond the racial figures, household income has remained relatively steady, and educational attainment (bachelors' degree) is fairly typical of Wayne County suburbs.

With the changes that are happening, a few questions must be asked.

1. While the "GP North is declining" line has been discussed frequently on DYes, if a bit too much, is it true? Does GP North hold its own against High Schools in the area? While it has always been a step below GP South, is the decline enough to cause parents in GP to pull their kids out and send them to private schools?

2. My understanding is that most of the crime in the city is either along the Detroit border on Kelly or concentrated around Eastland Mall. Essentially, the city gets better as you move eastward from Kelly. Is that a fair assessment? Is property crime concentrated in specific pockets of the city?

3. White Flight has certainly happened in HW, as evidenced by the statistics. But is it accelerating to the degree as in other inner-ring suburbs such as Eastpointe, Redford, and South Warren?

4. Have neighborhoods on the East side of the city, specifically neighborhoods east of I-94 that touch GPW, gone downhill noticeably? Or have they held up relatively well?

Thanks in advance for any comments/thoughts. Would appreciate to hear from any Harper Woods residents on this forum.

L. Brooks Patterson gone by year’s end?’s-end&goto=newpost Thu, 15 Nov 2018 15:59:13 GMT
Oakland County has been moving steadily left over the past two decades. This year's election has seen the Democrats flipping and now holding a majority of the Oakland County Commission seats for the first time ever.

According to the rules if the Oakland County executive resigns or passes on the commission selects a successor.

It has been widely rumored that LBP was planning to step aside toward the end of his current term with the understanding that a Republican-majority commission would choose Sheriff Mike Bouchard to succeed him lending Bouchard the incumbent status going into the next election.

If that plan is still in place, LBP will now need to go before the new commission is seated in January.

The Future of Ford Wed, 14 Nov 2018 16:23:27 GMT
How will Ford survive and profit in the disruptive and rapidly transforming mobility arena and move beyond being a “pickup maker with a sports car”?

Ford has recently taken several dramatic steps that question the very essence of what the company is and will become. Some examples…

The acquisition of the Michigan Central Station and the move of its edgy mobility efforts [autonomous, electric, data aggregation, ride-sharing] to Corktown has put an exclamation point on the company’s redirection intent.

On the sharing end, Ford recently acquired scooter-share provider Spin.

And today? How about getting into the delivery business as Walmart’s provider?

What’s your opinion? Do you think this will work or will it lead to loss of focus and scattered distraction, reminiscent of when Ford acquired Volvo and Jaguar? Any Ford employees out there?

Personally, I like it a lot and for the good of all Detroit I hope it works.

I believe the building is still owned by Ilitch, which will add another vacant building to their portfolio.

DTW McN terminal arrivals area bird poop, parking garage/shuttle bus - bad design Tue, 13 Nov 2018 21:54:53 GMT
I recently used the DTW McN terminal and fortunately was picked up at the curbside. What wasn't so fortunate was the tremendous amount of bird poop on the sidewalk, all over, at the curbside waiting area. It was a mess, didn't look fresh, and set a bad first example for Detroit and DTW, especially for someone arriving here for the first time. Assuming a passenger didn't sit in feces on a Delta flight, the last thing they should have to deal with is dragging their bags through bird poop to a waiting car. Does DTW have a power washer?

Also - whoever designed the baggage claim/parking structure configuration at the McN terminal should be forced to drag luggage up the escalator and over the walkway to the garage, or wait for the few elevators in place to get up to the walkway. Nothing better than surviving a Delta flight feces-free than to lug your luggage (always feels heavier coming home) up and over the curbside pickup area. Bonus points if you have to then wait for off-site parking shuttles - more cardio!

Why can't there be a designated area at the curbside for shuttle pickup? No one drives to the far end, they all bottle up at the beginning anyway. Rant over.

On this 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, I invite you to click here and read the Discuss Detroit thread I wrote 11 years ago to recognize the 89th anniversary of Armistice Day in Detroit, and which also highlighted the exploits of "Detroit's Own" 339th Infantry Regiment who were still fighting six months later North Russia.

My grandfather was a Corporal in Company I of the 339th, which was assigned to the Railroad Front. During the winter of 1918-1919, their front lines were located about 100 miles south of Archangel (Arkhangelsk), Russia. The Allied and Bolshevik forces were basically stalemated at this location for almost a year. Despite numerous artillery barrages and flank attacks, neither side could gain an advantage.

In early August of 2018, I traveled to Arkhangelsk and was able to visit the military ruins at the railroad front lines. This photo shows me standing in one of the trenches that my grandfather occupied at Verst 444 on the Allied side of the no-man's land.Name: IMG_3364.jpg

I was born and raised in Detroit but no longer live there as I am living in Indianapolis these days. I am getting ready to move into a senior citizen apartment complex after living in a home for the past 16 years. So, I am having to downsize, get rid of, and donate items from my lifetime of collecting what I consider are treasures. It is a difficult process but I'm warming up to it by donating many things to worthy recipients and charities. It's kind of like I view my "things" as I was the caretaker of the items and now it's time for me to pass them onto a new caretaker, then maybe one day they will pass them on, and so on and so forth. So, I have many high quality books with categories like Polish Catholic or Detroit Polonia research books of all sorts. I have found the St. Albertus Historic District and they are tickled for me to donate my book to their library. I have some original African Art objects like Zulu Spears and Shields that I am donating to the DIA that are also very pleased to be receiving them. I have many vintage, framed Polish Catholic photographs, First Holy Communion photos, Wedding photos from all back in the 19 teens, 20's, and 30's, etc., and birth certificates of PolishName: Photo 4.jpg

I was a professional photographer in my work life. So, I have many vintage, high quality, hard back photographic books of all sorts along with much film camera equipment. Again, all of my equipment is high quality such a Leica and Nikon bodies and lenses. What I am try to find is some good, worthy Detroit organization that can use these items that I can donate them to. I know I will get some good, thoughtful suggestions on this forum. I will consider every suggestion for its relevancy to Detroit. I certainly hope this is considered a Detroit Topic for inclusion on this portion of the forums.Name: Photo 3.jpg
