Netflix dropping doumentary on Tigers Legend and Donut King Mickey Lolich

But its not about the donuts.

"Netflix has announced the upcoming release of *The Underdog*, a compelling and deeply humanizing documentary chronicling the extraordinary life and career of former Major League Baseball pitcher Mickey Lolich, one of the most unheralded yet impactful figures in the history of the Detroit Tigers. The documentary is set to premiere globally on July 18, 2025, coinciding with the anniversary of Lolich’s unforgettable three-win performance in the 1968 World Series that helped cement his legacy in baseball folklore.

"Mickey Lolich was far from a conventional athlete. Labeled as too heavy, too slow, and too unconventional, Lolich was dismissed by scouts and sportswriters early in his career. But with a devastating fastball and deceptive left-handed delivery, he steadily rose through the ranks, eventually joining the Detroit Tigers in 1963. Over the next 13 seasons, Lolich would become one of the most durable pitchers of his era, known for throwing complete games with near-superhuman consistency.

"The heart of the documentary focuses on the 1968 World Series—a turbulent year for America, and a transformative one for Detroit. As the city grappled with social unrest and economic struggle, Lolich became an unexpected hero. Stepping up when ace Denny McLain faltered, Lolich delivered three complete-game victories, including a dramatic Game 7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and future Hall of Famer Bob Gibson. The performance is still considered one of the greatest in World Series history."

And don't forget, he hit a home run in one of those games.

Detroit Riverfront Conservancy embezzlement probe that might top $40 Million

This scandal has been percolating for while but these staggering numbers and the allegations against the CFO, his firing, and the resignation of the CEO are new. All very disappointing if proven true.
"The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s CEO has resigned and its chief financial officer has been fired amid a criminal investigation into what the organization says is more than $40 million in missing money.

"Financial officer William A. Smith was fired after a Friday vote by the board of the nonprofit, a news release from the organization said. The board also hired Ryan Sullivan, CEO of Great Lakes-focused development and advisory firm Watershed Horizons, to replace CEO Mark Wallace on an interim basis. Wallace will stay on to help the transition."

"The leadership change comes as the FBI investigates alleged financial mismanagement at the organization responsible for redeveloping more than five miles of riverfront with hundreds of millions of dollars in public, private and philanthropic funds. Conservancy Board Chair Matt Cullen has said an independent audit found “evidence of financial wrongdoing” by Smith.

"The audit found the losses amount to more than $40 million, Friday’s release said. The organization says it will “explore all legal avenues to protect the interests of the riverfront, including a potential civil lawsuit against Smith.”

Detroit's population grows for second straight year as prior estimates revised upward

Detroit's population grew for the second straight year in 2024, according to Census Bureau estimates that also revised upward the city's 2023 population, the city's latest milestone in reversing a generations-long people drain that began in 1957.The Motor City gained nearly 7,000 people from July 1, 2023 to July 1, 2024, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday. The city's population rose from 638,914 to 645,705, an increase of more than 1%.
The census also revised last year's population data, when Detroit grew for the first time in 66 years, to reflect stronger growth than previously measured. The federal government now says the city gained more than 4,000 people between 2022 and 2023, more than double the prior estimate.

Detroit schools to revive Cooley site as sports complex

They include a $25 million project to redevelop the long-shuttered Cooley High School into a sports facility for the district and community.
In a separate project, the district plans to construct a new school building at the Coleman A. Young International Airport, commonly referred to as City Airport, to bring the Davis Aerospace Technical High School back to its campus. Some 800 people were expected to attend the DPSCD Foundation’s Tyrone E. Winfrey Hall of Fame Alumni Gala at Cass Technical High School on Saturday night, where the projects were shared in a video presentation to attendees, a media representative told Crain's. Davis Aerospace Technical High School, which launched in 1986 to teach Detroit students in grades 9-12 the fundamentals of flight and aircraft systems, moved to Golightly Education Center in 2013 from City Airport following Detroit’s bankruptcy.
The school's return to City Airport will expand the aviation and engineering curriculum to include hands-on training and double the school’s current enrollment to about 200 students, the district said. The project will be funded by a $7 million state earmark made to the project last year and is expected to be completed in 2027, the district said.
