Looking north at the east side of Park
Avenue. The Women's City Club is the the right, followed by the
Blenheim, the Detroit
Building. "Park Ave has long been recognized by local
preservationists and architectural purists for its Manhattan-esque
streetscape, even if it's just a few short blocks. The size of the
buildings, their proximity to the street and setback from the sidewalk
all contribute to the feel, as well as the varied architectural styles."
Quoted from CaseyC on the Forum.
THE RUINS OF PARK AVENUE
Park Avenue is remarkable for
the density and quality of its deserted or partially occupied ruins.
A victim of abandonment in the sixties,
its fate has been held in limbo by speculators amid the shell games of
casinos and stadiums.
Just a block away from Woodward, its
stands in stark contrast to the bustling activity that now surrounds the
Fox Theater and new Tiger's Stadium.
I know little of its history, but have
long admired its architecture. Any reader contributions to this
story would be appreciated. Please email me or share your
knowledge in the Discuss Detroit Forum.
