Excavation for the new Tigers Stadium begins. Edifices cleared to make way for the project included both the Downtown YMCA and YWCA. Some of the ruins of Brush Park appear dimly on the horizon.

Tiger Stadium

By threatening to move the team to a suburban location, the team extracted huge tax subsidies from the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan to build a new stadium in the Fox town area.

Construction commenced in 1998.
